Wouldn't be as bad if they didn't still try to pretend they're real maps by holding back on the BFG ammo.

>when I see the map will have more than 300 enemies I'm really tempted to skip it because it's just a boring grind at this point
Determining if a map is going to be a slog from enemy count alone is hard. It depends if they use ass dick enemy placement and map geometry to make it hard and slow, how much higher tier ammo they give the player and what types of enemies they are.

Just Update it by yourself if you have the skills or want to learn how to code, the Dreadnought Megawad is coming out soon.

The only slog is that Dreadnought itself since GZD3.3 made some items never spawn or some monster not even dropping health, also Space Pirates enemies on Crack and tanking a SSG at point blank, and term never coding the pistol drop as the Super Missile or such since there's maps who uses that, like hub3057 on >pic.

I think slaughtermaps are fun if they're well designed. A box with 10,000 monsters isn't interesting, but an proper arena with well-implement gimmicks, cool layout and good monster combinations can be really fun. A lot of the latter maps in Sunlust are tons of fun because they keep surprising the player and require actual tactics to survive.

This is what kills my enthusiasm for Going Down towards the end of it.

The first half of the levels are neat ways to use the space but when it goes underground it starts to progressively just ramp up the slaughtermap stuff, to the point where you've got one map with at least four cyberdemons on it, amongst a fuckton of other shit.

It's not even that I hate slaughtermaps but when I'm in the mood for those, I go for maps that are just that from the start.

Used future has some romantacism to it, romantic settings are often orange and reddish as lit by candle light and decorated with maroon. Candle light also being yellowish the blaster shots were also yellow reminiscent of flareguns rather than covenant elite plasma rifle bright blue.
> not to mention Red Text on computers as opposed to ghostly blue, evoking visceral responses rather than flighty ones
> the emulsifying vats were pink in color like mcdonalds chicken nuggets, as opposed to nukage green or dark red blood
Used Future is also dirty and rusty and both of these things are brown. Carmack was playing Used Future 100% to the hilt and through this made it so perfect that it even contributed to the artistic definition of Used Future.

Arachnotron
Because weaving in and out of plasma shots is likely going to cost you a hit or two and if you're running kinda low on health thats a big deal even if it doesnt kill you. Because someone else will after that.

Also while I dont normally have a problem dealing with them, they do excellent work on infighting other monsters. And I have died ALOT of times to arachnotrons when im not giving a shit, so it goes to show just how deadly they are if you dont watch yourself.
- An underestimated fact about Arachnotrons is they are large bricks and cannot be pushed around, even if you can easily chainsaw/gun them into oblivion it means they can also block the means of escape while something else, quite often an HK or Fatso rips off your pants and proceeds to speed rape you.
> An Arachnotron in the wrong place can buy the other monsters just enough time to destroy you, and if you neglect the Arachnotron it will destroy you instead and up close it will not miss.

John Romero’s maps have amazing visuals, they are just too difficult with pistolstart.

Maps like Perfect Hatred, Against Thee Wickedly, Circles of Death, Tenements, The Abandoned Mines, The Living End are all better than any usermade hackwork.

then again pistol start was supposed to be a punishment for not saving your game, or for cheating, so obviously no consideration and fucks should be given for whether you can efficiently start a map with only the pistol.
They WERE usually kind to place weapon pickups in the map at least so that you could work your way up. Though you didnt always get back all the weapons you had acquired previously (eg, e2m4 has rocket pickups, but no RL).

I agree. I think the expansions are pretty hard to digest though. At its core, Wolf3D is very simple, and it kind of feels like they've done pretty much all the interesting stuff with it after you've plugged Hitler.
If you wanted more, I would suggest *maybe* Spear Of Destiny, but it doesn't do very much new.
The Nocturnal Missions are pretty boring to me (they feel 'artificially lengthened', to me, if that makes any sense), and the FormGen expansions are just complete garbage.

I think to make the core Wolf3d formula more interesting after the third episode, you pretty much have to look at a more advanced engine, so either Rise Of The Triad (which is really fun, but tonally and stylistically very dissimilar), or look for one of those finely crafted user made campaigns for sourceports, like Totenkopf SDL.

Refuelling Base is the best map in the game. For years in the early 00's it was my goto map to test mods for EDGE.
> actually warped to it to avoid the cliche map01 screenshot stream
Making the imps and zombies deadlier usually meant on a pistol start being driven back to the entrance and hiding in the secret alcove, and even having to kill imps who came in there. It was fun times and usually it was the Revenants down in the dark room that would kill me as they flowed out into the rest of the level.
Map10 is interesting and its Hard. You can rest but the way its designed is usually things will find you despite the non-wandering nature of doom monsters. And if you try to beat the level as opposed to just testing shit you have a nasty Cyber encounter to deal with (so the same map you're using to test, also includes a cyber to go test against too).

Circle of Death was one of my least favorite maps because it didnt provide any real leg room... its just a bunch of fucking juggling and a race to get away from the circle and into one of the alcoves so you can rest. And point of fact its pretty easy to pistol start CoD because of that shotgun at the bottom of the stairs. The stairs also make a good bottleneck.

> abominations like The Pit
ill agree with you on that, lack of falling damage in doom combined with not being able to look all the way up to the cieling just makes high vertical falls like this obnoxiously unrealistic in the extreme

It was long ago. The way I had it set up was imps had this string of fireballs they might be able to toss at you sorta at random, made to look similar to DBZ energy blasts. Most of those did like 1 or 2 dice but some of them did about 30 damage and you could get whomped with a string of this right in your face (it was random how much they fired, but the damage could exceed 100 for the train of them).

Zombies dropped an MP5k but they also fired quick 3 shot bursts too. The mp5k was a 6tic firing chaingun which was alright but with there being so many zombies you could take alot of hits.

I didnt have any good ideas for what to do with the pinkies so they were neglected in modding, but in recent times ive decided to give them a gravity arcing fireball attack (damage 6 dice). Having it limited range keeps pinkies and spectres from becoming range lobbers like imps and also allows them to be dangerous AF if they're crowded in a pit below you. Mainly did that with an ettin replacement for em because I was using A_Recoil to have em lunge at the player and this could toss them off ledges into pits... need a way for them to still stay relevant when they go down a ledge and this worked fine.
> by getting the fire arc just right, they can also be dangerous from above too. Gravity of 0.04 is a nice balloon like drift that allows it to go kinda slow, to avoid autoaiming shit just give the fireball a vertical velocity boost in its first spawn frame (including the NODELAY tag of course)

>>4853128
I didnt play master levels until recently when I picked up someone else's Wadsmoosh pk3 (since my wadsmoosh tool was never working properly).

Enforced pistol start every-single-level was stupid enough I just stopped after about 3 maps into it. I want the accomplishments of my previous level to carry over, regardless of the effects this has to the map pack as a whole. Feels like being stripped of hard fought trophies, sucks.

Honest question: what's all the hate for Brutal Doom / Project Brutality? I fucking love Project Brutality. The controls are perfect, the variety of weapons and monsters is amazing, replaying the old levels and other WADs with this mod just feels like a completely satisfying, new experience and I love every minute of it.

I realize that it's not like vanilla at all, but I honestly don't mind. Like I said, this is a completely different experience. If I wanted something more "authentic" I'd go with Chocolate Doom or something similar.

I know some people consider it "edgy" for some reason - vanilla Doom was edgy in its own right ~25 years ago - but the visual alterations in these mods (more blood, gibs, etc.) is the least important aspect for me. I understand that the mods take gore to an excessive level, but this is only a cosmetic issue which can simply be tuned down in the menu.

On the other hand, the mods' game mechanics (jumping, kicking, crouching, sliding, grenades, executions, new weapons, new powerups, new monsters, new behavior patterns and attacks for monsters, etc...) offer a fuckton of new strategies and playstyles to explore. What's there to be mad about?

The enemies are a lot less spongier while still feeling like more of a threat. The guns feel and sound more powerful in Wolfenstein. Compare both versions of the chaingun or even the standard Wolfenstein machine gun to Doom's weak-sauce chain gun. Even the standard Wolfenstein pistol is fun to use and still feels like it can pack a wallop.

Compare the standard Wolfenstein guards to Doom's zombiemen. They may go down easily, but a few sneaking up behind you and shooting you in the back can mean death if you're not careful. On the other hand, zombiemen aren't much more than a nuisance unless you're running low on health.

One area where Doom does beat Wolfenstein (besides obvious things like the level design and larger roster of enemies) is the inclusion of the shotgun. It feels great to use with blowing away low-level monsters like imps and all the former human enemies.

In Doom II there's "Between Levels," which is just a basic twelve-bar blues track but with nice drums. Something about the progression and harmonic buildup is enjoyable to me. You could put "Zero Hour" from Wolfenstein in that category too, but that one feels more tense.

Wolfeinstein 3D also had "The Nazi Rap," which always gets my blood pumping.

- say whatever you want about its map design, but Doom 4 has the best combat feel out of any Doom game.
- Doom 3's biggest mistake was by far that it meandered for wayy too long. it could've used being 10 maps shorter.
- fully upgraded Unmaker > BFG, period.
- the 32-map megawad format Doom 2 introduced was a fucking mistake and the game is shit just because of it. it means mapsets overstay their welcome for far too long, and very quickly as well. it should've kept the 8-level episode format from the first game. death exits don't excuse it.
- I can't play Doom without Smooth Doom + perk's sound mod + a custom HUD.

same. the novelty wears off really quickly for like 98% of the gameplay mods I try. the only ones still draw my attention towards them to this day and are still entertaining to play with are Demonsteele, DRLA, Nazis, Colourful Hell, Hideous Destructor, and Johnny Doom. of course Smooth Doom is king.

The guns work in vanilla Doom 1 and 2, but I actually kind of agree with this as someone who's played copious amounts of custom maps.

When you play a lot of maps that are way harder than vanilla, you start to see the critical faults popping up in the weapons the higher the difficulty level and monster amounts get.
>normal shotgun is basically useless
>SSG chokes on the sheer amount of high-hp enemies
>chaingun is severely underpowered and only marginally useful for sniping low hp enemies, cleaning up a constant trickle of hitscanners, and sometimes stunlocking arachnotrons and meatball demons
>RL's explosion aoe is too small and is positioned in a way it doesn't penetrate behind the target and wastes a lot of the aoe's size, aoe is way too small when dealing with wide fat hitbox enemies
>plasma continuously blows your eardrums out of your fucking asshole and is useful in only extremely marginal situlations after getting the actually good cell gun

It's better than the chaingun, you have a larger ammo pool, you have a higher rate of fire, and it does far more damage per shot.
In deathmatch, the volley of projectiles can actually be disorienting, as you can cover half your opponent's field of view with plasma.

It's pretty much the heavy machinegun role of Doom, and it's almost a shame it shares it's ammopool with the BFG, because it makes people hesitate against using it.

Optionally, boost the rate of fire by 1 tic, and then make it so every 50 rounds fired, there's a brief reloading animation, like the Duke Nukem 3D pistol.

Comparatively, make the Plasma hit a few points harder, but it has no reload pause (to set it apart from the subgun), also it doesn't share ammo with the BFG9000, thus giving you a strong incentive to use it.

aphex twin and going down go together like peanut butter and chocolate.

honestly when I'm really enjoying Doom, I don't really enter some fast-paced frenzy, it's more of some sort of subconscious trance where I'm effortlessly weaving in and out of projectiles like some sort of zen master with a shotgun. for that, sludge metal fits the bill perfectly, because it's brutal and heavy while still being slow and methodical. slow and fat is best. anything else is too distracting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulr9Fbj3BQM

plus it really encapsulates the mindset doomguy must have at this point after fighting demons nonstop for decades. it's not fun or fast or intense anymore, it's like the only thing keeping him alive and sane anymore is a heavy grudge slowly shoving him forward like a massive boulder. pretty metal

so I'm trying out zrift now.

is the actual game this fucking cheap with its monsters or is it just RNG being a bitch? every single one of them deals insane amounts of damage. I can't know what their attack patterns are since they all look and move around the exact same way and their sounds all mesh together with the sole exception of the grunts, so I can't tell which one of them I'm fighting before I walk into a room.

there's like six variants of the same grunt enemy and like four different fucking types of ogres. fire ogre. cannonball ogre. lion head ogre. tech ogre. executor ogre. or at least I believe they are ogres, frankly I can't tell because they all behave the exact same, and every single one of them is an uncreative bulletsponge.

There isn't really one single pivoting point for /vr/, it was really just a series of things chipping bits and pieces off.
It was a bit of Jenobyl, it was a bit of Zandronum lagging behind, it was a bit of Discord, it was a bit of 8ch, it was a bit of people getting sick of faggotry, there's not really one singular point to stick with.

As mentioned before, Discord came and splintered IRC. Discord was supposed to be a Skype replacement, but IRC got hit as well with a lot of people ended up jumping ship. Yeah, Discord's run by fucking memekids and it's one big botnet, but a chat program's usefulness is 100% based upon how many people you want to talk to are using it. There were a couple attempts at making /vr/ servers, but they never caught on.
Community-wise, there's always been a flux of people coming and going. Some people got tired of Doom and decided to play other games. Some people got tired of the community and decided to move on. Some people graduated, got jobs, got lives, got girlfriends/wives, and couldn't be a part of our group anymore.
There's also that /doom/ got significantly more mainstream. As was pointed out before, with our own guys starting to make a lot more content and get recognized by others, we've got newfags coming to 4chan and trying to fit in. I feel partially responsible for this, but I still wouldn't remove the 4chan credits from any of my older mods. Back then you guys were invaluable for testing, help, and feedback.

All good things must come to an end, dude. Simple as that.
We did a lot. We made a lot. We were felt all over the different communities. We have a lot of good memories. And those will last forever, at least.
Here's to you, Eric, Nig Bick Digger, Vince, Mike, scroton, Pancake, Mystical, The2008Lions, Cookie, Roman, ijon, charcola, DrVonFungi. Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, hope you're doing well, you glorious bastards.

I play using normal walk speed most of the time unless I need to dodge something or get over a gap/through a door quickly. I like to use Shades of Doom. It's a mod that applies skins to monsters. They work the same, they just look different. It has a lot of skins for each monster type and you can set it to have forced themes so every level you start has a different themed set of monster skins. Or chaos mode that makes every monster have a random skin. I like to use that when I play. For weapon mods I'll use anything really. I like GMOTA a lot and Combined Arms.

Played through the second suck's map, backenderotik %%sock (main author of Arcane Dimensions, from what I gather), backsteingotik%% or "GothiK Had Sewers Too: The Map".

Nightmare, Hard+ route then the normal one, all monsters killed, 7/10 secrets discovered.

Well, for one, the good thing was it wasn't nearly as anal as the first map. The opinion I came down to after playing through this first map, Midnight Stalker, and thinking a bit about my impressions of it, boiled down to something like "_I_ am an _educated_ mapper - and you are probably _not_ a particularly _educated_ (meaning skillful, see, substitution of concepts, educated <-> skillful) player, so, if you you don't happen to like anything _whatsoever_ about my _wonderful_ and _sublime_ creation, pretty please, cram you worthless opinion until you learn to really appreciate the _thought_ and _effort_ that went into the _creation_ of this map" - in other words, the author, in my opinion, was coming off as pretentious wannabe-academiac, using cheap difficulty as a sort of "face control").

Well, now that I have played through backsteingotik and, really and truly, _experienced_ it in its _fullest_, here is a second iteration. It's something like "I am not repeating myself 10 times over (being banal), I am citing someone (thus expressing an _educated_ opinion), therefore I would advise you to seize this opportunity in order to learn from someone who knows much more than you do (meaning: please continue paying attention to my recital of exactly the same point using different synonyms over and over again), since that's what High Art, in my personal (EDUCATED) opinion, is all about (and I'll drone THAT particular point, in sliiiightly different formulations, again, and again, and again)."

Also, layout-wise, it's a repetitive structureless clusterfuck, giving you each weapon several times over, with all the secrets I've found having been "find that red button visible from a single point in a room with a gate in it", overreliance on arenas with spawns, and with the main gimmick being The Crushers (you are running in circles pushing buttons until enough enemies eventually die from infight and The Crushers so that - gasp! - The Shambler will finally spawn in - that happens twice in the level with the only difference being that the second iteration eventually spawns a vore then another one - naturally, they have to be dealt with immediately).

The map it reminded me the most was arcadia.wad, that one that received Cacowad. This one IS somewhat better though, I'll give it that.

brutal doom is both under and overrated.
ribbiks maps are for sadists.
pistol starting is a waste of time, the games map progression was meant to carry over weapons.
duke is overrated but the other games that share the engine nam & ww2 gi are amazing.
russians make the best maps period.
people here rag on hd textures a lot because "it's out of place", but if you're playing a gameplay mod made in <2013, it doesn't matter because you've already modernized doom, you might as well update the look.

not that quakes soundtrack is bad, but it would be much better suited to a horror game, which quake definitely is not. it has horror themes, and youll get jumpscared by fiends once or twice, but other than that its a run and gun action shooter.

Quake 2's OST would fit better in Quake. Because Quake is more fast-paced and full of relatively short, concise, linear levels, while Quake 2 is the opposite.

On UV the map has a lot of enemies which are mostly demons (so no drops) including 10 pain elementals and rather few ammo boxes. You come into the level after going Tricks and Traps which is more generous, but I could definitely see you running out of ammo.

Just run around and do what you have to do and leave monsters to wander without dealing with them until you need to. Pretty much ignore the PEs as painful as that might be.

There is a Berserk early in the map, where all the shotgunners are. Make use of it. Also use shotgun or chaingun on the chaingunners.

You might want to go get the BFG (?) before you deal with the chaingunner room because it is pretty deadly in there.

These screenshots remind me of dreams you have where you know the context and what it's about, but at the same time, they're not that accurate, if not, barely representative of what they're even about, making it weird enough to confuse you, whether or not you'll even remember said dream.

>HDOOM is legitimately well done

Ehh...

Yes and no.

It does what it does quite competently, but what it does is barely worth doing, at least in the way that it's been done.

It's a lame idea that's well executed.

...Aside from the cacodemon design. Wtf.

The opening theme to Quake was really good, the rest of the game should have had more beats like that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgo5BNbiGMo

Doom had a mix of tense and slow tunes, and high tempo action themes. That's the kind of music distribution that Quake 1 should have had.
