AVP2s chaingun is indeed great, has a good meaty sounding firing sound to it, which is something that every chaingun needs (either that or a good BRRRT, a la Doom 4s turret mode chaingun). It beats Q2 in the sound department, but Q2s chaingun just liquefies everything it touches in a second. Literally, it reduces their body to gibs before they even hit the floor. Even tanks and gladiators go down to it in no time

Ancient Aliens, it's very comfy but it can be challenging. If you're new start on a lower difficulty for a nice cruise through and enjoy the scenery. The second episode of it is really pretty. Strange Aeons is a really good atmospheric sort of wad with a Lovecraft sort of influence. Think Dream Quest. Zone 300, Crumpets, and Coffee Break have good short levels for when you don't have a lot of time or just want something quick to blast through. There's a lot of good stuff out there my man. Lots of fun to be had.

Hexen is such a loud game.

Doom monsters idle sounds is just "gurgle-garg", while chaos serpent is a horse whinny combined with T-rex screech combined with a goddamn car alarm. It plays it every 5 seconds. And every 60 seconds more monsters of every kind replace the ones you just killed so you have to hear that godawful ear splitting roar on a continuous loop for 100% the duration of the map, no exaggeration. Go to Deathkings' Armory for an example. Not to mention all the other monster sounds. Speaking of Deathkings, Treasury has thunder and lightning, which is neat, but it's far too common occurrence to get 8 lightning strikes in half as many seconds. On top of this, as if the designers still thought the game was too quiet, they added periodic ambient sounds. On "metal labyrinth" maps you have the chair dragging sound effect from HL2. On outdoor maps you have a 2 second clip of crickets and other bugs. And all of these are louder than your weapon sounds rather than the volume you'd expect an >ambient< sound to play at. In some maps you have crusher walls and fireball traps that cycle in an infinite loop, so no matter where you are in the map you can hear KA CLANK KA CLANK KA CLANK or THOOM THOOM THOOM. Even the menu sounds are loud. Doom has a click and gunshot, while Hexen sampled the sounds of the first and second largest drums in the world. All this shit, and the soundtrack is just a few synths and dinky percussion. It's like the composer and sound designer hated each other so while the former was setting the tone for a horror-fantasy game, the latter just cranked out as much SFX as possible so that the music could never be heard ingame. In most maps you can't even hear any music because of all the other shit that's constantly drowning it out.

Why hasn't Dakka gotten a proper release yet? It seems totally fine when I use it. No buggy stuff, everything works well, very customizable in its menu options. It's better polished than many other weapons mods I've used. My only criticism of it is that the shotgun and SSG both have grenade launcher alt fires and one of them should do something different than the grenade launcher.

It's pretty plain and basic, especially by modern standards (or really, standards after Doom), but it does have some charm to it, it's kind of fun.

I'm adamant in my position though, that the game peaks with the original third episode, because by that point, the game has basically done everything you can kind of do with it.
The Nocturnal Missions are pretty dry, like a really tough and overcooked steak.
Spear Of Destiny is actually better than Nocturnal, by the virtue of being shorter and doing a few kind of newer things, if you really like the original Wolf 3D, and wanted more of it, SOD would be my suggestion.

The FormGen expansions are like a raw, partially unthawed hamburger patty you find on the sidewalk. Don't eat it.

Playing Duke 3D gave me a thought about a weapon someone could make for a Doom weapon mod. So the Duke 3D has the triple barreled machine gun. That made me think of a SSG with six barrels that fires three at a time. Three in a row on top, three in a row below those. Fires three shells, then the barrels rotate and a mechanism pushes the three shells into the bottom set of barrels, fire, rotate again. It'd be overpowered but it'd be a fun and fast SSG that eats up ammo like hell.

Those two screenshots are only the first level. The comfy open window and fluttering paper effects are never used again.

Chasm is full of shit like that.

The level design is almost entirely flat but the second to last level has a tall set of stairs and uses 3D models for a bridge.

There are explosive barrels that only turn up in about 2 rooms in the entire game.

A cut scene warns you about an advanced security system but only two gun turret enemies appear in the entire game, and on the same level.

For now it is just an animated decoration actor, i used it as the exit for the previous maps though, from the lore point these portals is what connects the Multiverse, but in the case of this map it being just say the players came through it like the Techbase maps usually does with DOOR3.

whats interesting about chasm is that its level is rendered via BSP same way Doom/Build engine does it.
Its levels are also built same way Wolf (or RottR) levels do - via tiles, it just uses much more varied tiles to do that - the room with papers and window for example is 3x3 tiles.

So it's like a crossbreed between Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake.

Whats with those people who call themselves fans of old school shooters who then turn around and get pissy when an old school shooter has hitscan enemies in it, when hitscan enemies are a hallmark of old school shooters and almost any one you could name had plenty of them?

They arent cheap, they arent overpowered. They have a telegraph time before they can attack you, and can almost always be immobilized by pain animations if you hit them first. No you CANT dodge their attacks, thats the whole point of them. You have to break line of sight. Different enemies require different approaches to beat. It adds depth and challenge to the game. Are they just crying bacause they cant w + M1 their way through the whole game? I dont get it
