The more I play Sigil, the more I love it. At first, I thought it was meh, but as the levels start to grow on me and I learn their quirks, I finally realize how well the concept had been executed and how well the levels had been designed.

Yeah, Sigil is really good IMO. Once I beat Plutonia and 64 I'm gonna go back and do it and the other wads and IWADs on UV (maybe pistol-start if I feel like it.) The only thing that holds it back is that I feel it would've been really fun to see Romero use Arch-Viles. But it seems he prefers Doom 1 mapping more so, it is what it is.

I don't go pushing e-celebs in any threads or boards, I'm just tired of dipshits who are paranoid about them and lash out because of imaginary shilling. There's people on this very board who will insist that if you say you like Super Castlevania, you just got your opinion from AVGN, and if you say you don't like Super Castlevania, you just got your opinion from Egoraptor, and if you do not see why this is completely retarded and annoying, you should probably kill yourself.

It's almost a pure exploration sandbox with multiple routes around each map. You usually don't have to explore more than 60%-70% to reach the exit. It's really just amazingly well balanced for being so open ended, the flow is impeccable.

Besides the occasional person who views MIDI as sounding 'inherently silly', I don't find the MIDI music any less serious than the CD music.
I'd honestly consider the contrary, seeing as the MIDI's don't have that 'laughing kids' sample or that one brat saying 'ring around the rosy'.

Due to deferred rendering of AE you HAVE to use the shitty TAA that is included, as it blends the dithering effect UE4 relies upon for transparency/transitional effect.
It works same way Composite signal works with dithering on CRT, and has same drawback - it's a blurry shit.

Unfortunately when deferred rendering is used in UE4 game your only choice is between "garbled mess with dithering everywhere" and "Vaselinated, but coherent"
You can try and remedy the TAA blur either wish sharpening which is most games do for varying results, or rendering at higher res and then downsampling - you can do that with DSR on NVidia cards.

The game looks better with TAA, and if you want it to be a pleasant experience, you'd have to get used to it. After some time, you barely notice it's there, while it's lack is very noticable all the way.

It's really damn nice. I've had some issues with straight Doom for years, and the mod pretty much turns it into the game I wanted it to be. Enemies are far less likely to do that shamble towards you instead of attacking, enemies attack in volleys and as a group, hot swapping which makes the combat faster so as to keep up with the new enemy abilities, the shotguns retain their reload animation so hot swapping doesn't become OP, and fucking bullet/shell casings. The rhythms remind me of a Build Engine game, or UV -fast, but not as ridiculous as that.

it's not just the AA, they also deliberately disabled mipmapping as part of their "artistic vision" or something, this leads to everything being noisy at a distance.

overall I found amid evil inconsistent at everyting. some great levels, but equal amount of bland and bad ones, same with enemies. best weapons both use green mana, which discourages switching between them and turns everything else into "least bad" situation.

As far as I know, anything and everything that is "vanilla-compatible," "limit-removing," or "Boom-compatible" is designed with those limitations in mind, namely, that the player is using no vertical mouse-look and Doom's original autoaim. If the author recommends vertical mouse-look, it will be in the text file that accompanies the PWAD. I intentionally left out "ZDoom-compatible" because those are the ones where mouse-look is intended, though it's still a small minority of ZDoom PWADs.

So, the first time I encountered retro-shooters was when my dad brought me CD-R with DOS games from work. Quake didn't worked, Doom 2 ran extremely slowly for some reason (it was during WinXP days), and Duke ran just fine. I liked that pixelly artstyle a lot, and I even somehow managed to enable a non-inverted mouselooks in the settings, though it worked extremely bad and I went back to playing it on keyboard only, with numpad used for aiming. Then I found a Doomsday on a CD from vidya magazine and thus I was able to experience Doom. That's probably why I like it so much, even the city levels. I got Heretic and Hexen from unrelated sources later on, was really amused about how similar Heretic is to Doom. Later on I would play retro-shooters a lot on my PDA, then there was my Brutal Doom phase - fortunately, I eventually improved my taste. And here I am now, blogposting about shit no one cares about. So, what was your first experience with old shooters?

Didn't have a computer until I was ~13, but there was a decent iOS port of Doom1/2 I sunk lots of hours into before that. When I finally saved up to buy a dinky old thinkpad, it could basically only run Doom engine, Goldsrc and emulators, so from ages 13-17 I pretty much just played old WADs and co-op'd with my cousin.

I almost have a certain nostalgia for being poor, nowadays. I had to get creative to amuse myself back then

I let myself save "a few times" per map, but you know how it is; letting yourself do saves quickly turns into save-scumming.

one thing i've been doing though is going back to the earlier levels and trying to single-segment them. it doesn't go well but i'll keep trying, it's a lot of fun.

usually i try to not save within fights/rooms, but holy crap it gets bad sometimes... in map 32, in that arch vile swarm at the end, damn straight i saved during it

>>6530069

it's deceptive though, because he's so chill. he's so chill even while fighting multiple arch-viles simultaneously.

multiple arch-vile fights in close quarters always mess with me. one somehow always flanks me or gets behind me and i start panicking once my screen catches fire. i watch decino do those fights and i think "yeah there are arch viles at such and such locations, seems fine".

i'm slowly getting better, but wow it takes lots of situational awareness to handle some of those multiple arch-vile fights. you basically have to have an exact knowledge at all times of the arch viles, where they are in their animation, the revenant missiles, and all the "columns" scattered around.

sunlust is brilliant

oh and about the pistol start. in some ways it's easier because you know exactly what you have to work with; you're never trying to ration ammo from the last map and crap like that, or just brute force fights that can instead be finessed or tricked through.

Cryptic Passage sucks ass. Why did I have, and can still have fun with the other previous episodes and not this? Is it the constant mid-level spawns? That's probably one of my favorite things when it comes to pistol starting Sunlust so far, I don't have to worry about "oh I should conserve my BFG ammo for the next level" or some shit, I'll always go back to zero.

Speaking of, I'm currently about mid-way through Map 11 and I heard that Sunlust goes batshit crazy in the last half, is this true? I saw snippets of Decino's playthrough and it looks pretty intense but I'm trying to stay mostly blind. Thanks, I've been binging this the last two weeks with max mobs and slightly increased damage so I'm well aware of what needs to get done and it's all been a fucking blast except for Cryptic Passage. Either it's the Plutonia of Blood or it's just not very fun; having poked my head into Death Wish's first awesome level I'm leaning towards the latter.
I'd also question the extent you'd need to "go in crazy" with Blood in general: Poking around corners with tommy guns and voodoo dolls is very viable, or you can just poke your head into or run by a room to start their AI and funnel them through a doorway. It's also an actual death wish if you 'go in crazy' without knowing where the cultists are, especially with increased enemy damage.

I'm a music autist. I can only speak for Heretic.

Technically it's all chiptune, as it's all digital music, that end ups sounding like synthesizer music because of the limitations of the era (sampling modified via modulation).

Genre wise its influences are:

1* Dark Ambient (industrial + ambient) + Neofolk (industrial+folk or folk assisted by modern instruments depending on who you ask) with heavy orchestral elements - E1M4, first half of E1M6, E1M8, E1M9, E2M1, E2M6
2* Jazz / World Fusion- Intro, Outro, E1M1, E1M2, E1M3, second half of E1M6, E1M7, E2M2, E2M9, E3M2, E3M3
---POWERGAP---
3* basic rock / punk tempos - E1M5, E2M3, E2M7
4* Synthesizer Music - E2M4, E2M8

Ouside E1M5, E2M3, E2M7, tracks present a mix of all elements, but generally try to achieve a sort of mix: industrial with jazz fusion sensibilities, specially that bass and drumming, he does try to experiment and comes up with some tracks that sound like traditional synth music, namely E2M4 & E2M8

That "gritty synths that sounds like a guitar" and that straight from jazz fusion bass are things very specific to Kevin Schilder, you'll be hard out of luck to find that stuff elsewhere.

What you want depends in a lot what you liked from those 3 influences:

For the Fusion, right off the bat I can recommend some tracks from Tommy Tallarico's MDK score, that is veeery jazz fusion and uses orchestral arrangements. But the synths sound like real synths and not chiptune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjoxKMhsrRw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlHLk6-MLdk

For the Industrial (Dark Ambient really) and the synthesizer elements I recommend Jesper Kyd's Freedom Fighters OST

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDx2gIlme3w

Or pure dark ambient, just go straight into Kurt Hartland's Soul Reaver OST

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNWSDvDqm9g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HfYVKJEGvo

If you just want pure chiptune and didn't know what it is, I may interest you with demoscene music

hey anon (i'm anon from >>6533330 )

it's so cool you're playing blind; keep it that way.

i hadn't played doom in about 3 years, it was decino's sunlust videos that bruoght me back.

what i've been doing is playing through maps, then watching his videos (e.g., for secrets and to compare strategies). very satisfying this way.

i'm on map 17 and it really ramps up. i'm getting absolutely maimed. but i'm also getting much better; when i go back to the earlier maps, i can play them much more smoothly...

Basically? zscript/graf's abomination matured right on time for the Indie games explosion. Outsiders began seeing GZDOOM and it's pseudo code as a 2.5 FPS engine and tried to exploit it as much as they could. Action DOOM II was kinda the proof of concept for this and Brutal gave the community unexpected online presence.

At the same time the modder oldguard began taking cues from these new ideas the newfags brought in. There's a noticeable shift in priorities from mapping and experimental/atmospheric mods towards "polished" mods be it in gameplay or spritework.

Unity, GZDOOM, RenPy, RPG Maker and others have plenty in common, but out of all indie game & modding scenes, ours is certainly a success story.

Y'know what, and I mean this in the most unironic way possible, and I acknowledge how autistic it'll probably sound...

Based on how so many kids a few years back said that Quake or Doom looks like Minecraft, I'm somewhat surprised that no one, to my knowledge at least, has attempted to make a Minecraft texture pack with Doom and/or Quake's textures, or least one that took off in popularity. I could see the Nether being a lot moodier with some of Quake's in particular.

lol it just gets worse, especially e3m7. episode 3 is by far the easiest to speedrun, however, because it introduces the BFG and the invincibility powerup, and once you know your way around the maps, you can run to the exit in like a minute on each map.
