>textured first person 3D editing mode using your mouse
>really intuitive interface and keyboard shortcuts
>built in nodebuilders which were actually pretty good and reliable
>runs natively in Windows
>came with an easy to understand beginner's guide with clear pictures
>didn't cost anything at all (unlike some other editors)
CodeImp and Dr.Sleep are heroes, map editors for Doom was a wasteland before Doom Builder. I remember when it was new, it was so easy to use that it was actually fun.
I was still a newbie kid back then who just crudely threw shit at Skulltag hoping to make it work, so I wasn't making any masterpieces or anything, but goddamn it was so EASY. I always loved to doodle, so for me Doom Builder would satisfy that beyond what I could get from crude sketches in the margins of my math notebook.

I've had mixed experiences with FOSS software overall through life, but the Doom Builder series is probably the best example of what they should be, it's left all the alternatives in the dust.

Those monsters are more dangerous, but much of that is application. A single Baron in a large and open room really isn't much of a threat compared to 12 Pinkies in some really tight quarters, even if the Baron is a higher tier of enemy. Doom 2 does up the ante a bit compared to the first game, but it seldom goes particularly hard or use its all of its new monsters in particularly creative ways.
IMO it's not until Plutonia that you get to see what Doom 2's new monsters really are worth.

Even Simpler is genuinely a very tough map on WMD, I can't think of any one level in Doom 2 which is anywhere close in difficulty. The only seriously mean part of Doom 2 which comes to mind is that one ambush trap in The Pit.

This one is really good except for the background, it's impossible to get dusted by the lone chaingunner in Congo, the background should be someplace hell, perhaps The Pit, where you have that obscene ambush of chaingunners.

Oh no, Nirvana is magnitudes worse, for sure, there's parts of The Pit which I think are good even.
As for the Lost Soul limit, it might have been added after the level was made, and nobody remembered to address this. Optionally Sandy just thought it was funny and left it like that.

It should probably have been divided up into three episodes or something like that, but for a game which came out in 1994,a time period where nobody else had any serious experience with making maps for Doom but Sandy, Romero, and American, it's leagues better than basically any custom mapset which you could find online in 1994, short of *maybe* Aliens TC.
Go look at 1994 era mapsets, it's a fucking wasteland, there's only a few sets/episodes which are passable, and a sparse smattering of alright lone maps. People were still learning what to do, TNT Evilution and Memento Mori won't show until after Doom 2.

In spite of its flaws, Doom 2 mostly holds up.

While we're at it, here's a version of Simpson's Doom which I played a bunch as a kid back in the day.

Full jank, but it brings back some memories.

Nightmare! is basically just for hardcore speedrunners.
Unless you enjoy that kind of thing, I wouldn't let it bother you.

There's that REALLY mean ambush trap where you grab the rocket launcher and is immediately beset on with machineguns and shotguns front and back, with no cover, and if you didn't know about it, chances are extremely good that you just dusted on the spot.
I'm thinking some people are probably upset about that.

Another map people hate, but which I like, is The Chasm.
