Doom 2 as it was made, was pretty much made before development of Quake really got off the ground (though Carmack was more or less working on that engine at the time), it was a deal with GT Interactive, who basically said "Hey, how about you make a cool mission pack for Doom, and we'll publish it for you, we'll all make loadsamoney!", so they did. Doom 2 wasn't really planned in the way it happened, if it was even planned at all at that point.

While Doom 2 did add a lot of wonderful new stuff, monsters, textures, music, and the Super Shotgun, the new levelset was just not nearly as good, Tom Hall was off the team already, so the only real input he had on Doom 2 was that an unfinished/unused map meant for Doom was recycled and redone as Map 10 for Doom 2, John Romero, who made a lot of the really great levels in Doom (including pretty much all of E1), was high off his tits on the fame Doom brought to them, he was busy being out and famous, being a "rockstar", he wasn't doing as much of his job (this would later continue with Quake, and then a lot with Dai Katana), as a result, he only made six levels for Doom 2, and Sandy Petersen had to pick up Romero's slack, which was problematic, as even though Sandy's levels were fun and imaginative, they were ugly as shit, and don't work well in large doses.

The maps had less personality because one of the more colorful persons was less involved, and one who's colors are good when used sparingly had to fill that in.

Doom 2 is fun, sure, but it's not nearly as fun as Doom, even if it has a lot of cool new shit, because the maps just aren't as good, there's not nearly as much atmosphere, there's not nearly as much interesting themes, maps feel largely disjointed, in Doom, you felt much more that you really were in dark distant space stations, on far away moons.

I've always thought Doom 1 is MUCH MUCH better than Doom 2.

I don't even like the Super Shotgun. It's fun to use but the problem is that it's overpowered, and as a result, gameplay becomes 90+% SS and 10% every-other-weapon (and most Doom 2 Wads suffer from this too).

The only really good thing about Doom 2 is the new enemies.

I missed the boat back in the day and am only just now getting around to playing it for the first time and I'm a little underwhelmed. It's not really bad but feels a bit... soulless? It's just so grim and humorless compared to Doom.

It's nice and fast paces. Differs from other roguelikes because of the focus on ranged combat, and because of the bitchin' tiles, sound effects and music. Tons of weapons, both unique and assembled, and special levels.
Doesn't play a whole lot like Doom, you probably will take cover more than you will strafe (there is a strafing mechanic, mind you).
I say give it a try, it's free and fun. Pretty hard too on the higher skill settings.

For me
doom 2 was:
>30% rocket launcher, 40% super shotty, 20% BFG, 10% rest of arsenal.
Chaingun was way too slow and an hassle to fire when strafing at the speed of light, same thing goes for Plasma Gun. There were some rare situations where you get the hold of BFG to clear rooms or speedkill some big bads. From up close it's always Super Shotgun, and from distance it's always about Rocket Launcher. Super Shotgun simply buries Shotgun to the ground, perhaps that's why you don't feel the same as Doom 1.

doom 1 was:
>40% shotgun, 20% chaingun, 20% rocket launcher, 10% plasma gun, 10% rest of arsenal.
To kill Barons from up close you use Plasma Gun and finding BFG is about luck. Chaingun may make quick work of trash in a long distance, or you can quickly focus your fire to the barrels. Rocket Launcher is when you have distance or height advantage against lots of trash or a few big targets. For everything else you simply fall back to your Shotgun.

-The Autoshotgun now fires a rapid 4-shot burst, and reloads faster.

-The assault rifle now fires an accurate 3-burst while scoped.

-No need to hold 'R' to reload the Nail Shotgun

-Made Kabros less aggravating by slowing their movement, attack, and fireballs. Also lowered their health somewhat.

The nail shotgun one-shots cacos, and ammo for it isn't rare, while other monsters can butt-fuck you by the time you empty 12 auto-sg shots onto a single caco.

Also, the rifle can do whatever the autoshotty can do and at a longer range, so the auto-sg is redundant and underpowered in the regular mod.

The best way to not get hurt in DoomRL is not being in a position where you can even be fired upon. Several things you need to learn in DoomRL aren't in any other roguelike and are peculiar and not really intuitive.

That would... kind of depend.
Revolvers are typically chambered for rimmed cartridges, like .38 Special, .44 Special .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, etc, while exceedingly few semi-automatic pistols are chambered for these.

There's the Desert Eagle, but that's an outlier (and frankly, not a particularly practical combat weapon, even if it looks cool as shit), models exist in .357 and .44.
There's the Coonan, a 1911 derivative, which is chambered for .357, and can shoot .38 Special if you replace the recoil spring with a lighter one.
Colt has made some regular 1911 pistols chambered for .38 Special, but only wad-cutters (normal rounds wont fit), specifically as a target pistol.
There's just not many automatics that shoot revolver cartridges, most wouldn't find it worth the hassle.

Now, there's revolvers that can shoot cartridges meant for automatics, but typically, these require half-moon or full-moon clips for extraction, there's old US Army revolvers chambered for .45ACP, that use moon clips (made during WW2, to fill in gaps with non-frontline troops, due to shortage of 1911 pistols), there's also British Webley revolvers in .455 Webley, that have been "converted" to accept .45ACP cartridges in their cylinder (with modified Webley moon-clips), and it does work (but this was never safe, as .45ACP is many times higher in pressure than .455 Webley).
I know that .32ACP will fit in .32 caliber revolvers, and usually extract well, due to having a semi-rim.

Smith & Wesson currently is making a new revolver 9x19mm Parabellum, that uses moon clips (seven round cylinder, 5" half-lugged barrel, seems like a very nice little gun). Ruger has made single-action revolvers in .30 Carbine, without moon-clips, for what it's worth.
What remains is .22LR, for which automatics, revolvers, manual actions, and everything is made, but it's not a powerhouse of a round.

I would make it a "slow" close range DPS fire-mode that needs to be reloaded/pumped after each shot. You fire it, it goes on for a few seconds, maybe four max, then need to reload/pump it before firing the flamethrower again. That way machinegun won't become too versatile and overshadow another gun.

Doom 1 is arguably better. The super shotty is overpowered in Doom 2, honestly, and the atmosphere/architecture in Doom 1 is amazing.
Some people believe that the monsters are better in Doom 2, and that the Super Shotty is a *good* thing--but most of them also admit that the Super Shotty is only really good for deathmatch.

I don't know what the hell I did, but somehow while playing DoomRPG + DooMRL Arsenal/Monsters I somehow managed so projectiles and hitscan go through me like I'm not even there, only able to take damage from melee and area effect, as well as being less noticeable to monsters. I suspect the use of the ghosting and invisibility shield accessories, despite not using either at the moment.

Of course, I'm already taking advantage of this by obtaining the Torgue Blastplate and Boots, buying berserk at the start of every level and meleeing everything not a cyberdemon.

Blood and Redneck Rampage have no sourceport and probably never ever will.

But they play really great in DOSbox. Though Blood is a little demanding and you need a good processor to run it at a good resolution (with my old 2,5ghz I could only run Blood at 320*200 to have 60FPS, but with my new 3,4ghz I can go up to 800*600).

Blood is a great game once you understand how to play it. Redneck Rampage is hit and miss, but the add-on 'Suckin Grits on Route 66' is better than the original and tries as best as it can to hide its flaws; and the sequel 'Rides Again In Arksansas' is very underrated and fixes most of the flaws of the original while bringing more to the table (pic related).

If you're not familiar with dosbox there are a few things you should know about configuring Blood once you buy the GoG version so don't be afraid to ask.

That is not a sourceport. The source of Redneck Rampage was never released.

ERampage is a recreation of Redneck Rampage in EDuke32, meaning that, all the maps, art and sound are accurate; but any programming (coding) was redone from scratch and therefore are NOT accurate at all.

It's just like BloodCM. If you're playing that, you're not playing the original game, you're playing a russian bootleg.

No. ZDoom is still ultimately based off the Doom source code. It's more like the difference between Super Mario World and a SMW clone written in flash. Things like the jumping physics almost always feel off because without access to the actual Mario physics code, the best you can do is try to recreate it by experimenting with how it feels in game until it's "good enough."

I don't think there is a Doom equivalent. No one tried to recreate Doom from scratch before the source was released.

it's actually very easy when you get the hang of it. It's hard at the beginning because you probably have too little ammo and good weapons, look for the secrets. Shadow Warrior is possible to play slicing through the enemy hordes like a lightsaber slicing butter, just take your time to get the hang of it, it plays different from doom but ultimately i'ts the same thing only easier
