playing doom 1:
>Shooting barrels in time before mobs get close to get rid of lot of 'em
>Grabbing hazard suit to lurk in bloodpools or acid, revealing secrets and finding goodies
>Enter the room to get locked in for a period, until you find a button or another exit
>Grab an important key or item, when you backtrack you'll get flanked back to your room
>You'll get nervous in the corridors of UAC, trying to take cover and evading flanks and large ambushes from behind

playing doom2:
>Get ambushed in small dark rooms, get ambushed in large dark rooms, don't shut your lights down. Monsters always coming out of the closets, there are monsters in your closet.
>Grab something to get ambushed right away, doesn't matter if it's important or not, as long as you move forward a small bit in the level progress.
>When you grab something important it goes like; "uh hey man, when you grab that key/item, we'll ambush you by running out of this closet right HERE, so you better be prepared, k?"
>Lurking in the pools of acid have little fun and exploration won't bring anything better to replenish your stuff. there are plenty of ammo and weapons laying around waiting for you.
>Run or teleport to places where you get crossfired but can evade by jumping down the platform or run away.
>Combat large crowded monsters, keep circle strafing instead of inhaling the loneliness atmosphere and stress

Doom 2 as it was made, was pretty much made before development of Quake really got off the ground (though Carmack was more or less working on that engine at the time), it was a deal with GT Interactive, who basically said "Hey, how about you make a cool mission pack for Doom, and we'll publish it for you, we'll all make loadsamoney!", so they did. Doom 2 wasn't really planned in the way it happened, if it was even planned at all at that point.

While Doom 2 did add a lot of wonderful new stuff, monsters, textures, music, and the Super Shotgun, the new levelset was just not nearly as good, Tom Hall was off the team already, so the only real input he had on Doom 2 was that an unfinished/unused map meant for Doom was recycled and redone as Map 10 for Doom 2, John Romero, who made a lot of the really great levels in Doom (including pretty much all of E1), was high off his tits on the fame Doom brought to them, he was busy being out and famous, being a "rockstar", he wasn't doing as much of his job (this would later continue with Quake, and then a lot with Dai Katana), as a result, he only made six levels for Doom 2, and Sandy Petersen had to pick up Romero's slack, which was problematic, as even though Sandy's levels were fun and imaginative, they were ugly as shit, and don't work well in large doses.

The maps had less personality because one of the more colorful persons was less involved, and one who's colors are good when used sparingly had to fill that in.

Doom 2 is fun, sure, but it's not nearly as fun as Doom, even if it has a lot of cool new shit, because the maps just aren't as good, there's not nearly as much atmosphere, there's not nearly as much interesting themes, maps feel largely disjointed, in Doom, you felt much more that you really were in dark distant space stations, on far away moons.

>> No.1942393

I loved Doom 2 level design... thematically, doom 1 is superior, but the way the level themselves and the battles were structured in doom 2 was excellent.

>> No.1942405

I've always thought Doom 1 is MUCH MUCH better than Doom 2.

I don't even like the Super Shotgun. It's fun to use but the problem is that it's overpowered, and as a result, gameplay becomes 90+% SS and 10% every-other-weapon (and most Doom 2 Wads suffer from this too).

The only really good thing about Doom 2 is the new enemies.

I've got a question for any Doom veterans in the thread: what was your reaction to the release of Quake?

I missed the boat back in the day and am only just now getting around to playing it for the first time and I'm a little underwhelmed. It's not really bad but feels a bit... soulless? It's just so grim and humorless compared to Doom.

These impressions are all based on the single-player mind you, I haven't touched muilti.

I like the Imp Warlord, but him having a shield is a problem.

I'm really not comfortable with misleading sprites, so if he has a shield, he should use it. But of course enemies that can block in Doom engine games are the fucking worst thing ever.

It's nice and fast paces. Differs from other roguelikes because of the focus on ranged combat, and because of the bitchin' tiles, sound effects and music. Tons of weapons, both unique and assembled, and special levels.
Doesn't play a whole lot like Doom, you probably will take cover more than you will strafe (there is a strafing mechanic, mind you).
I say give it a try, it's free and fun. Pretty hard too on the higher skill settings.

For me
doom 2 was:
>30% rocket launcher, 40% super shotty, 20% BFG, 10% rest of arsenal.
Chaingun was way too slow and an hassle to fire when strafing at the speed of light, same thing goes for Plasma Gun. There were some rare situations where you get the hold of BFG to clear rooms or speedkill some big bads. From up close it's always Super Shotgun, and from distance it's always about Rocket Launcher. Super Shotgun simply buries Shotgun to the ground, perhaps that's why you don't feel the same as Doom 1.

doom 1 was:
>40% shotgun, 20% chaingun, 20% rocket launcher, 10% plasma gun, 10% rest of arsenal.
To kill Barons from up close you use Plasma Gun and finding BFG is about luck. Chaingun may make quick work of trash in a long distance, or you can quickly focus your fire to the barrels. Rocket Launcher is when you have distance or height advantage against lots of trash or a few big targets. For everything else you simply fall back to your Shotgun.

Anybody remember Project MSX? No?
Can't blame you; this thing updates every half-century or so.
I went ahead and modified the things that I didn't like, feel free to check it out.

-The Autoshotgun now fires a rapid 4-shot burst, and reloads faster.

-The assault rifle now fires an accurate 3-burst while scoped.

-No need to hold 'R' to reload the Nail Shotgun

-Made Kabros less aggravating by slowing their movement, attack, and fireballs. Also lowered their health somewhat.

Eh? No. It just can't be a corridor shooter. Multiple different paths is more RPG fare. Like, Half-Life and HL2 are examples of good linear design where newer Call of Duty games and BioShock Infinite are examples of bad linear design. The main trick is to make the linear game feel non-linear.

Well done linearity is still bad though, it's not something I really enjoy. I jsut love the maze like fashion of Doom maps and I'm sad there's no other modern FPS making use of that style.

I greatly enjoyed Stalker for the relative openess of its maps. Other than that I really do not enjoy modern FPS much.

Well, some people like music enough to have it one loop, but not usually. It's more for the comedy aspect of something being 10 hours than anyone actually wanting it.

Compare it to this reaction image. No, the image doesn't need to be scaled to such a ludicrous size as it doesn't really gain anything from it, but the implication that it would be scaled to that size creates the humour. It's funny because an image of that size would just be silly, and the same logic holds for 10 hour mixes of anything. It's a very simple joke, but I don't suppose it's that obvious considering everyone thinks there's some deeper implication than just "Heh, 10 hours. 10 hours of that! That's funny."

>> No.1943405

Not, it's not linear at all. You are being stupid. It's a maze like structure in which you can often choose between two or more paths you want to explore until you hit a stopping stone or until you just feel like going somewhere else. You can comb through maps or just go into one direction until you hit a road block. That is the exact opposite of linear.

Does it have an entrance and an exist, yes absolutely, but that does not dictate linearity at all. You are being extremely silly.

Many maps are entirely linear. It has branches to its paths, yes, but you must generally move in one basic progression. You can run around all you like, but you still end up needing to go down X path to get a key or a button to unlock path Y. There are occasional branched paths that go to unnecessary areas for goodies and shit, but DOOM is still basically linear. It's just not Call of Duty linear.

You just don't understand what linear means.

You see this map on the right here>>1942764 ? It is LINEAR, it is shaped like a line, literally. Doom maps on the other hand are square or round or whatever shape but mostly square. That is not linear in DESIGN, nigger. Of course there is a linear progression ULTIMATELY but you have that in every game. Even in GTA you only get certain quests after you completed other quests (same principle as getting a keycard to open a door) By your ridiculously loose definition of linear, there would be no nonlinear games at all.

>> No.1943961

>>1943942
Ok, worded that wrong.

I mean that both the rifle and autoshotty are used to deal with imps and humans (and maybe demons), but you should really be using other weapons against cacos and above. The nail shotgun one-shots cacos, and ammo for it isn't rare, while other monsters can butt-fuck you by the time you empty 12 auto-sg shots onto a single caco.

Also, the rifle can do whatever the autoshotty can do and at a longer range, so the auto-sg is redundant and underpowered in the regular mod.

Not him but I've played DoomRL and got a normal win in an older version before they added an episode.

The best way to not get hurt in DoomRL is not being in a position where you can even be fired upon. Several things you need to learn in DoomRL aren't in any other roguelike and are peculiar and not really intuitive.

Radarshooting
>firing blindly at out of sight areas, listening for the pain sounds, also listening for the idle noises monsters make which tells you when enemies are near+roughly where they are, headphones help hugely
Cornershooting
>with the strange way the targeting works, many weapons can be fired from position around a corner from an enemy. Leading an enemy into a favourable position where they can't hit you but you can hit them is one of the most important things in DoomRL

That would... kind of depend.
Revolvers are typically chambered for rimmed cartridges, like .38 Special, .44 Special .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, etc, while exceedingly few semi-automatic pistols are chambered for these.

There's the Desert Eagle, but that's an outlier (and frankly, not a particularly practical combat weapon, even if it looks cool as shit), models exist in .357 and .44.
There's the Coonan, a 1911 derivative, which is chambered for .357, and can shoot .38 Special if you replace the recoil spring with a lighter one.
Colt has made some regular 1911 pistols chambered for .38 Special, but only wad-cutters (normal rounds wont fit), specifically as a target pistol.
There's just not many automatics that shoot revolver cartridges, most wouldn't find it worth the hassle.

Now, there's revolvers that can shoot cartridges meant for automatics, but typically, these require half-moon or full-moon clips for extraction, there's old US Army revolvers chambered for .45ACP, that use moon clips (made during WW2, to fill in gaps with non-frontline troops, due to shortage of 1911 pistols), there's also British Webley revolvers in .455 Webley, that have been "converted" to accept .45ACP cartridges in their cylinder (with modified Webley moon-clips), and it does work (but this was never safe, as .45ACP is many times higher in pressure than .455 Webley).
I know that .32ACP will fit in .32 caliber revolvers, and usually extract well, due to having a semi-rim.

Smith & Wesson currently is making a new revolver 9x19mm Parabellum, that uses moon clips (seven round cylinder, 5" half-lugged barrel, seems like a very nice little gun). Ruger has made single-action revolvers in .30 Carbine, without moon-clips, for what it's worth.
What remains is .22LR, for which automatics, revolvers, manual actions, and everything is made, but it's not a powerhouse of a round.

They didn't write it to have sequels. They wrote it to have it out there.

I understand that it's a lot of work, but we do appreciate your efforts on our behalf. One thing you will need to keep in mind for heretic/hexen is that the standard balance for those games relies on you having inventory items to use, and the blue vials are the possibly only doom style health pickup that exist in the game natively. So you will either need to find a way to implement the standard non-invisible heretic/hexen inventory in your mod patch, or you will need to re-balance the items a bit so that the player can restore their health more easily from map pickups alone.

If you want more classic/vanilla playstyle, you'll want ZDaemon. Zandronum has a lot of options to emulate vanilla play, but ZDaemon will always be much more accurate and efficient about it.

Using freelook (looking up and down) on the Icon of Sin is technically cheating, since it's not vanilla behavior and makes the fight unbelievably easy. Using mouselook (using the mouse to look left and right) is vanilla behavior and perfectly fine.

The general view is that Doom 2 has better monsters and Ultimate Doom has better maps

Also you're *kind of* cheating if you're aiming UP to shoot at the Icon of Sin, because you're rendering the intended mechanic as useless

Doom 1 is arguably better. The super shotty is overpowered in Doom 2, honestly, and the atmosphere/architecture in Doom 1 is amazing.
Some people believe that the monsters are better in Doom 2, and that the Super Shotty is a *good* thing--but most of them also admit that the Super Shotty is only really good for deathmatch.

As for using mouselook on the Icon of Sin, that's a tough one. If you don't look up and down, you have to travel to the top, hit a switch, jump down to a platform in the lava pit, and then pour rockets into that thing's head like there's no tomorrow.

Then again, I'm pretty sure you can press pageup and pagedown to look up and down in Vanilla Doom.

>> No.1946075

>>1946057
Doom 1 has better level design and theme.

Vanilla Doom supported the mouse for turning horizontally. Vertical freelook was not possible. The Icon of Sin fight was not designed with that in mind, which is pretty obviously since the ability to freelook makes the fight trivial.

you poor thing, posting on three threads without luck.

Despite some people refusing to accept it, the author literally shot himself in the foot by rejecting XP support. Go look at the dev thread, he killed any hype he had in the forum, no-one kept posting about the program and reporting bugs. I'm not saying he dropped the ball, but...

And let's not forget that the one person shamelessly pushing for its creation in most Doom forums is currently busy dealing with forum maintenance which doesn't seem to be finished anytime soon

Doom 1 has way better levels, but Doom 2 has a lot of new resources like cool new monsters, textures, music, a kickass sawed off shotgun, stuff like that, which means levelsets for Doom 2 will have a larger range of content.

As for mouselook, the original game was compatible with horizontal mouselook, and it was how Romero rolled, vertical mouselook was not available, and thus, you could argue that it's cheating when using it against Icon Of Sin, but I personally feel that free, vertical and horizontal mouselook is just such a natural thing for first person games that I can't really go without it. I just refrain from really using vertical mouselook when fighting the Icon Of Sin.

I've always preferred the second and I always will.

>More enemies with more varied attacks
>Larger and more interesting levels that escape from the constant corridor-y feel of the original game. Much more variety leading to more combat situations. I'll agree Doom's maps are more 'solid' in general but I'd argue Doom II's best maps put all the maps of the original to shame.
>SSG (I don't care about so-called 'balance', this gun is a joy to use and its existence is validated by the stronger enemies and how many more you face at once than in the original)
>All these factors result in improved gameplay
>More challenging but both games are absolute piss, with Doom 1 being even pissier than Doom 2
>Better music

I'll always prefer II. I can't believe people prefer the first. It's mind boggling to me.

Blood and Redneck Rampage have no sourceport and probably never ever will.

But they play really great in DOSbox. Though Blood is a little demanding and you need a good processor to run it at a good resolution (with my old 2,5ghz I could only run Blood at 320*200 to have 60FPS, but with my new 3,4ghz I can go up to 800*600).

Blood is a great game once you understand how to play it. Redneck Rampage is hit and miss, but the add-on 'Suckin Grits on Route 66' is better than the original and tries as best as it can to hide its flaws; and the sequel 'Rides Again In Arksansas' is very underrated and fixes most of the flaws of the original while bringing more to the table (pic related).

If you're not familiar with dosbox there are a few things you should know about configuring Blood once you buy the GoG version so don't be afraid to ask.

That is not a sourceport. The source of Redneck Rampage was never released.

ERampage is a recreation of Redneck Rampage in EDuke32, meaning that, all the maps, art and sound are accurate; but any programming (coding) was redone from scratch and therefore are NOT accurate at all.

It's just like BloodCM. If you're playing that, you're not playing the original game, you're playing a russian bootleg.

>>1947186
You must be joking. Even BloodCM is terrible and that's using Build with all the freedom of EDuke32. Why would anyone even consider ZBlood is beyond me. I mean, it's an interesting Doom mod, a cool experiment I guess, but if you think it can 'replace' the original game you might as well think that a Polystation can replace a Playstation.

Chocolate Doom strives for complete accuracy, including all the bugs and glitches, while still being usable under modern systems. ZDoom is instead the infinitely more advanced source port meant for modding, scripting, etc.

>> No.1947408

>>1947394
No. ZDoom is still ultimately based off the Doom source code. It's more like the difference between Super Mario World and a SMW clone written in flash. Things like the jumping physics almost always feel off because without access to the actual Mario physics code, the best you can do is try to recreate it by experimenting with how it feels in game until it's "good enough."

I don't think there is a Doom equivalent. No one tried to recreate Doom from scratch before the source was released.

it's actually very easy when you get the hang of it. It's hard at the beginning because you probably have too little ammo and good weapons, look for the secrets. it can stream the games on the cabinet for the other people in the arcade, but the person playing has to be streaming on twitch, i actually had the creator of anarchy arcade come in and play a few doom games, the only doom game that actually let him stream it was Action Doom 2

but i've been in his arcades and other peoples arcades, and most other games stream without issue, and its pretty cool to watch it happen in game

also, even if you dont ever go online, its cool to bring all your digital media to a 3d form, kinda like a build your own namco museum game

i turned cs_office into my own personal arcade.
