I've been in a Doom binge for the past.. I want to say at least 8 years.

So many fun mods, so many fun levels.
Was disappointed in modern gaming like really hard so I just play Doom.

Even something that should have been rad as shit like Vanquish was really slow and uninteresting.
Project MSX blew that shit out of the water with ease.

I still play vanilla Doom most of the time though.
I just use Eriguns and edited the player a bit.

I tried Destiny. Too slow and guns don't feel so good.
Played Quake 1 and 2 recently. Kinda enjoyable but after awhile I just get tired of it.
Watch Dogs, was really bad and made me upset.

Shmups can keep my attention because I love dodging bullets, but bullet hells do not necessarily draw me into them because patterns are not as interesting as dodging projectiles that adapt to where you're at.

So something like Cho Ren Sha 68k is fun, but Ikaruga is not.

Ys has the pacing I like but not the difficulty outside of boss fights. Fun though. But I finished all of them on the hardest difficulties.

Have you tried Serious Sam yet? Snag The First Encounter and The Second Encounter and give them a spin. Some folks call them the Western forays into bullet hell games, but they're retro-styled FPS games through and through.

Maybe try to get into RTS games? Red Alert 2 is a particularly popular one that can be played at an absolutely hectic pace and has a big following still. Age of Empires and Empire Eath may still have some players, too.

Maybe try some of the old WRPGs? I'm guessing they probably don't have the pacing for you, but they're good games.

Aside from that, I dunno. Taking a break from DOOM may do you well.

Serious Sam does have great enemies, but it feels like there's a point where fights drag on a tad too long and that's why I don't really like Serious Sam as much.

It's not a BIG deal, but it's fucking annoying. In Windows 7, say I deleted a file in a folder on accident, and emptied my recycle bin without knowing. All I'd have to do is right click on the folder it was in, hit "Restore In Previous Session", and then select a restore point. That specific file would restore to that specific point in time, and my file would be back. It was super easy, they through that all out the window for Windows 8.

I had to get my settings back to the way I like them again in GZDoom, and getting the IWADs again was easy. The annoying part is the wads, I didn't have many to begin with, but it's annoying having to go and download them over again.

UT is slower and in 2k4 has vehicles and other craziness. UT99 is a lot slower and, I think, easier to get into, less of a skill ceiling.

Q3 is much faster and more hectic. The maps are smaller and it is more focused on straight deathmatch, while UT is more team-oriented and everyone acts as a whole, kind of.

I prefer UT, but Q3 is good. Don't play Quake Live. They ruined it by trying to appeal to the COD audience (not really, but you get the picture), and changing the core game.

I think it's pretty cool. FFA feels less unfair and frustrating with the loadouts, though a bit more chaotic, and some miss scrambling to get any weapon (though you still gotta get ammo). I mostly don't, honestly. The bunnyhop didn't affect me, I keep using strafejump. Timers are alright I think. Clears up how the mechanic works and it's nice to know when things will spawn amidst the chaos of not knowing how good everyone's timing is. Also everyone grouping up to fight over a major item is fun. Heavy machine gun is alright I think. Easy to use but superseded by other guns when you get good enough. Still great to finish off people though. Didn't feel the LG nerf. I like the damage numbers, dunno why. Specially with the LG, they "feel" great. Same with the "ding" when you kill people that got added a while ago. The new announcer, ambivalent about him. Some of his lines I kind of like but others are pretty bad. Maybe I'll have to get used to it, but still. Not great. I love that Duel is mostly unchanged. My friends gave the game a try after getting destroyed a while ago and we had lots of fun.

TL;DR of my totally subjective opinions: FFA feels less frustrating, don't use bhop but i think it helps new people, timers make things clearer, hmg is average, don't know about the LG nerf, new announcer pretty much sucks (mostly the inflection of his voice), Duel's the same and I love it, my friends gave the game a new chance and loved it.

I quite like the novels, even if they were hokey, they were fun to read (the first one was the best, they then gradually descend in quality after each book, but never become outright shit, just not as good), and even though I don't like that they changed the demons to be genetically altered beings from other planets, the way they present that in the novels isn't unreasonable or bad, the justification is decently solid on that point.

But it deviates a good bit, it pretty much stops being about Doom after the second book. I'd say they aren't canon, just an interpretation, it's just based on general concepts and plots, if you distance it enough from the games, it becomes kinda enjoyable.

I have all the books, I hear that Infernal Sky is rare, and I did have to look for it after buying three other books, I don't know why, but it's harder to find apparently.

It's supremely cozy to read the first book during fall/winter, all alone, in a semi-cramped, warm bathroom, with no windows, a weak bulb, with a vent up on the wall making noise, and a gun on the floor. Really really sets the mood.

Have you tried Deus Ex or System Shock 2? They're first person, so they may be a bit more engaging. Vampire Bloodlines is also first/third person and is fairly well-paced for an RPG.

Then again, I guess if you don't like them then you don't like them, but it's probably worth a shot. As much as I love isometric RPGs, being able to play in first person makes a game much more engaging than in an isometric view.

Think about it, Anon. Biblically speaking, the owner of Hell has a vested interest in taking over Earth, since whatever final battles between Heaven and Hell there are will involve Earth. Their goal is to have a presence on Earth before Heaven does, and thus to control the battlefield and decide where the fight happens.
In terms of canon, the Demons got to Earth before Doomguy's quest in Doom 1 was finished. There's no reason for the demons on Earth to have called off their successful invasion simply because Doomguy was able to wipe out Hell; in fact, Earth presented their best bet at keeping a place to live.
Strategically speaking, if you've won a battle in a distant land only to lose your HQ, then the force that won the distant battle is probably stuck with holding their lines. In some cases, they may not even know they've lost.

Basically, Hell still makes sense.

I think Scrapjacks are great enemies, even if they are mostly just Mancubi.
They can break the environment though so that's pretty slick.

Khnurs weren't particularly interesting and the spiders pretty lousy cannon fodder.

I think the first five levels were pretty bad, then you go out to the desert and it picks up.

The final level felt pretty good but the final section goes on for too long and the last boss was lousy but hey, the Dunes remix was great.

I didn't like the reloads added to the shotgun and assault rifle.
And I really didn't like the assault rifle's fire sound.

Devastator was a fun addition but it made the rocket launcher feel lackluster due to it's superior rockets.

The * is basically a catch-all, so any numbers in that area. Whoever this "Kal Foxis" is, he must have been a big-fucking-time evader in order to ban an entire range like that.

Ok, so I went through this on UV fast monsters and it was pretty easy.

In no particular order, here are some critiques:
1. Playtest your maps. Play test them after big changes, periodically, and prior to release. This helps you find out things you need to fix or change.
2. Fix the exit. It's impossible to beat without cheating.
3. The map needs some more pistol rounds. The chaingunner gives the chaingun, but it can only be used a small amount before you run out.
4. Fix the textures.
5. Most, if not all, doors in the map are lower than the floor, making the textures not aligned until it closes.
6. The textures in the secret room are all messed up.
7. The map needs some more health.
8. The ceiling textures on the doors are off and should be something like metal instead of things like carpet.
9. I'd change the green armor in the secret to something like a blue armor or something else entirely, as in the previous room, you just got one.
10. The carpet that you spawn on should be a bit further out so as to not share textures with the platform.
11. The key pillar in the first room should be raised a bit so that it doesn't clash against the nukage texture.
12. Where you get the yellow card, I'd add a small ambush, maybe two or so shotgunners.
13. If you want more details, the wall in the room leading to yellow, the one with the two stimpacks in front of it, could be inset with something or the lights could be raised a bit.

There might be more or less. I thought it played well. Good start, just fix at least the exit and textures.

+ Architecture in some parts of the map look really, REALLY nice. I really like how a lot of sections of this map look. (First three screenshots)
+ I noticed you have multiple difficulties implemented! Neat!
+ I'm gonna be honest, I missed that secret the first time around.
+ Interesting choices for monsters.

>THE BAD
- While the place looks good architecturally, the textures are badly aligned in many areas. (Next three screenshots.)
- Ammo is nonexistent sans the backpack in the secret. It's hard to complete, and I actually had LESS ammo on HNTR.
- Neither of the rooms you start in have ambushing monsters. This means that the first shot of any weapon you fire will cause EVERY single monster in that room to start pouring out on you for a delectable monster gangbang. (screenshot 7)
- Putting a green armor in one of the first rooms and then another in a secret is kind of pointless. Change the secret one to a megaarmor or something.
- The fighting portions of the map are claustrophobic as fuck, except for the blue door room. It kind of makes things like fighting the Pain Elemental a... pain.
- Textures in the secret are fucked in the duck.
- Health is stupidly scarce, and on HNTR there is only one: a stimpack.
- The exit is unenterable and has broken textures. (Screenshots 8 and 9)
- It's actually kind of short, and can be breezed through on HNTR after a few times playing.

6/10 work on it.

I wholeheartedly recommend you ignore things like the first door, as that was just me having fun with Doom in Doom format, but loot at the brightness changes and stuff. I don't know. changes:

remove zdoomism (line 195 changed from type 63 to type 1)

remove unneeded tags 1,3,4
-tag 1 used on sector 31 but no linedef with that tag.
-tag 3, 4 were used on manual doors (line 599/sector 54; lines 606,610 sector 4 resp.). manual doors always apply to backsector of line, no need for tags

move monsters in sectors 50,51 to not overlap walls and prevent them from lowering

move monsters down from ledge (sector 45) as it was too thin for them to be able to move

make secret area door stay open (it looked awkward after closing) and remove middle textures from interior side

Short answer: no, not really. Aligning your textures well and building the room around the textures instead of the other way around is the best way, as well as good usage of border textures and detailed areas. The more you map, the better you'll get at it. Also remember that a bland room with drastic and cool lighting is a simple way to make a good room.
