My favorite part is where he looks at his fist like "Did I just fucking do THAT?"

That's exactly how the Berserk Pack experience should be. You punch a motherfucker so hard his head explodes, and you didn't even realize that A), you were punching that hard, and B), that it was even *possible* to punch that hard.
Optionally, using a combat knife or bayonet, and realized you just stabbed an imp straight through the forehead, like he was made of plasticine.

reminds me of some forum post I read a long time ago about this guy's motorcycle accident experience
>riding on the expressway at high speed
>somehow fucks up and ends up skidding across the pavement along with his flipped over bike
>wearing full riding gear so doesn't get ground to hamburger but the face part of his helmet is against the pavement
>skids across multiple lanes of traffic and under an 18 wheeler from the side of the trailer
>skids out the other side miraculously uncrushed by the wheels
>ends up on the shoulder and is uninjured enough to stand up and lift his bike upright
>adrenal glands have just double creampied his bloodstream
>glances down and notices his handlebars are all bent to fuck
>reaches down and bends them back into approximately the right shape
>a week later he and his mechanic are in the garage trying to finish the job and even with both men putting their full weight on the handlebars they won't budge
the berserk pack is probably kind of like this

fun fact: this is exactly why gorillas and orangutans are incapable of fine motor skills like humans but are still able to tear palm trees in half. more force means more strain on the muscles.

the smaller muscles get, the more susceptible to damage they become. that's why so many people have fucked up shoulders because there's a lot of little shoulder muscles just to allow for the huge range of motion, so it's very easy to tear one or two of them. the more you know

It is possible. I played so many maps I hardly remember them anymore. But I like small maps that use backtracking and ambushes the most.

thinks where you live aren't brown because they are painted. If you left everything to moulder for centuries it would all be brown. Half the monsters don't even have eyes. And remember that Quake engine was all software at the start so fancy textures with lots of bright colors would look like aliased shit. Quake's brown and muddied textures helped mask the fact that there's only so much you can achieve in terms of full screen fully 3D rendering on a Pentium 90 with 16 gigs of ram and a software renderer.
remember that Quake was originally an MS-DOS program although it got a windows client fairly early on if I recall

Not only is that false, but even if it were true, that would be more variety than Quake's boring ass brown level design that permeates it almost entirely. When people think Quake, people think BROWN. When people think Doom, people think all sorts of colors.

The funny thing is that you're trying to defend Quake by comparing it to ONE episode of Doom, and with false information, too.

I think the game was rushed out before they finished it, because the last part feels very thin and brief.
Given the graphics problems that the game had on PC in particular, I would say that supports that notion, too.

There's a pretty decent bossfight in the game early on, so it's not like they couldn't make another.
They released a DLC with an all new bossfight, I think to make up for the fact that the end of the game is complete bullshit and lackluster.
It was kind of a meh DLC.

As for what Carmack thinks, I have no clue, he wasn't the the director or anything, he wasn't involved in the level design, character design or the gameplay, Carmack does the engine and code, that's what he always did at iD Software, and what he did until he left, for the very most part.

That's a fair point, actually. I think the only Doom mod with a non-overpowered autoshotgun is Hideous Destructor, but that barely counts since it's just a firemode for the pump-shotgun. And, well, it's Hideous Destructor. Funnily enough, Trailblazer and Project Brutality both have automatic shotguns, either in the form of an upgrade and an entirely new weapon. And in BOTH mods there's an upgrade for their respective autoshotgun that replaces the shell-by-shell reloading method (which is a good way to temper the power of an automatic shotgun in a game) with a magazine-based reload. (even though it's a stripload in trailblazer) I think it's a neat coincidence. Also, sorry that I use brackets so much.

Basically, if while holding down your dedicated sprint button you pressed A or D, you would perform the rolling animation that normally required its own keybind. This means that if you don't enable autorun, either in player options or just by pressing the key for it, trying to strafe while sprinting would lock you into a thirdperson rolling animation. There was no option to disable it.

This isn't really a case of weapon balance, but I'd say it's still related. The "Heavy Machine Gun" is a really weird weapon to include. It fires somewhat faster than the rifle, has about the same accuracy as the minigun, doesn't need to reload, and has a grenade launcher that uses rockets. Thing is, in practice it basically acts as a mix between the minigun and rifle without really being unique in any way. If you want accuracy, use the rifle, if you want firerate without reloads, use the minigun. The grenade launcher also isn't as effective as just using the rocket launcher itself. I guess it was just added so Mark can say "Hey, here's another feature". It also means you can have up to 3 weapons on slot 3 that you have to scroll through to get the one you want.

of course he does. he drops by every so often, coincidentally whenever a new test build of the mod comes out, so as to bask in the "supreme butthurt" of his most critical playerbase portion.

you know, just like every other overly defensive content creator in the 21st century who genuinely believes that any type of negative feedback ought to be dismissed or interpreted in a facetious manner because it's totally disingenuous and bias towards poor, poor me.

I kinda wish he'd move on to something else, but at this point he's known as "the brutal doom guy" so he's damned himself in that sense. It'd be nice if he chilled out and focused on making maps and stuff.
That's just wishful thinking in wanting to see more cooperation and collaboration within the Doom scene, and less dumb bickering.

He should release a "throwback" style of Brutal, back when it wasn't overflowing with weapons and crazy graphical features. Not something as light as BURLTUMD, and certainly not something the size of his mod's latest incarnations, but a nice halfway point. Keep the core stuff like taunts and gore, and take out the weird map enhancement things and the superfluous weapons.
He should also certainly make more maps, HoE:SE was quite good, if not a bit cryptic.

There's a big, fancy map that involves a singular player traversing through a big castle, shooting switches and solving puzzles. Actually, i agree on that, i don't aim Hunter's Moon at being a perfect recreation of Quake 3 on GZDoom to be honest, that's why i didn't even bothered in make hacks or something to make strafe jumping work and some other few stuff.

Then there's that people which ask "Quake 3 on Doom? Why not play Quake 3 itself then?", this is exactly the reason, i recommend people playing Quake 3 itself for technical and performance reasons if they wants PvP game modes of "pure skill" for real, HM's purpose is exactly cover the entire part Q3 lacks but retaining the frenzy the game have in populated matches, Hunter's Moon is so restricted at SP/Coop experience that it doesn't work at all for Deathmatch and stuff of the kind if you try to setup the gamemode.

There have been attempts, but nothing really noteworthy that I remember. There was a mod called EntityPlus which added a bunch of cool features for mappers but I don't know if any good maps were made for it.

There is one mod going by the very simple name of "Hunt". Has a coop gametype where hordes of enemies spawn all over the map and you have to pick up artifacts to finish. I remember I really enjoyed that one. Customizable to no end and it worked surprisingly well with bots too.

I really suck at explaining this. Found only one video of it, and naturally it's just pants-on-head retarded with it's config of enemy skins, and on a map that doesn't really play well with that gametype. Better than nothing I guess:

I never played this Hunt mod, but seems to be pretty much the Invasion mutator from the UT series, in UT3 that mutator was also fanmade and plays exactly like this one, as in Enemies are just regular bots with weird skins and a single invisible weapon that keeps spawning randomly in the map to kill the player making the game mostly a Survival Holdout in case.

Man, it's pretty interesting having to revert back to the kind of ammo scavenging I do in STALKER, but it's fun when you get a good groove going.

Still trying to get the hang of the fact that you can't pick up partial magazines, but there's a pretty steady supply of other stuff, so it's not an issue. Especially with shotguns.

I don't know what to suggest for maps honestly, so if anyone else wants to do that feel free. For weapon packs though I can name a few I've used with it.

Doom Incarnate - For if you want to mix New Wolf style gun gameplay with the Old Wolf enemies.

High Noon Drifter - For if you want to kill Nazis as a Cowboy (and a Big Fucking Waifu)

Heretical Doom - For if you want to kill Nazis as a Wizard (and a Leveling System)

Trailblazer - Because I'm pretty sure killing Nazis is something an 80's action movie character would do.

Kira's Bizarre Adventure - Because honestly Kira is a wonderful JoJo villain and playing as him in this mod is honestly just a blast.

Obviously others are free to point out things I missed or if they think my taste is shit, but this is what I personally tried with it.

And if anyone wants to point out any map packs for me or the original asker both then obviously go for it because I could always use more stuff to play.

Russian Overkill, if you wanna fight Facism with Communism! (and very large guns)

Faspons, if you wanna fight Nazis, but with some pretty standard but very polished and configurable weapons! (can't remember if it's compatible with monster mods)

Beautiful Doom, if you wanna fight nazis with smoothed out doom weapons with flashy visuals. Make sure to comment out all the monster related lines, though it's easy and comments in the main DECORATE file show you how.

Hearts of Demons: Baron, if you wanna fight nazis as a hulking Baron of hell with some oversized guns and powerful spells. Just be careful with the napalm rockets, they're FPS decimating.

Final Doomer, if you wanna fight nazis with weaponsets themed after Final Doom's maps!

There is a unique symbiotic relationship at work here. Read on chaps and I'll explain.

Mark likes this kind of drama in a way, it annoys him but he'll like rising up to tell people to fuck off. He's naturally confrontational like that in the way that some artists hate all critics. Don't get irked at the word ''artist'', in the context of this conversation we'll use that word and you know what I mean anyway. How many musicians or actors are there out there that think anybody who has a problem with them is full of shit and knows nothing and what would they know as their fans all think they're awesome? Exactly.

Second, there *is* somebody or somebodys out there that enjoys pissing and whining about Mark and who jumps at the first chance to whine about him here. Not helped by the fact that Mark isn't the most palatable person socially, these two feed off eachother in an endless loop. One such person I've seen complain about Mark's opinions on things outside of Doom, which to me says they're making it a personal matter.

Said critic goes beyond complaining about Brutal itself and instead wants to whine about Mark, Mark is a diva and wants to tell them "you're all against me because I'm so awesome!". Both get the dopamine high, critic from feeling like "See? Mark's a jerk!" and Mark from "Heh, I got to tell people I'm awesome and they're shit".

How does this end?
It doesn't unless they have sex with each other or they kill one another. If it was just one then the other would reminisce to us about how much they disliked the other.

It is pretty overcrowded in the arsenal, yeah.
I honestly think you could cut down the weapons by half, a lot of them do the same thing.

I mean is it *really* necessary to have three different subguns in your arsenal at the same time? Then three rifles?
You start with a handgun, do you really need two more? The Luger and Walther have the same capacity and performance, why are both of them there?
Even if you had a system where you have limited slots and could only carry one type of weapon per slot (which actually wouldn't be a bad idea for WW_Nazis), those two pistols are so similar it's kind of inane to feature both of them.

Yes you are.

HD isn't that bad but it is fundamentally an entirely different game from standard doom. And I mean it genuine is an entirely different game and there is not a single thing you can take for granted from your knowledge of standard doom.

The big, BIG problem with the mod is that there is no way for it to physically force you to find the manual in the Hideous Destructor-master folder, run it with word/wordpad and then read as much of it as you can understand, and play with it for a half hour on the lowest difficulty until you know how everything works. A pretty good comparison would probably be it's Red Orchestra to Doom's Call of Duty (not a quality assessment just a comparison).

The health and wounding system is NOT that punishing, but it is weirdly obtuse. It's basically a simplier You can't heal yourself with your body armor on, and if you get lit on fire, taking off your burning body armor is one of the only things that will put it out.

Yeah it's obtuse and kind of ridiculous with a level of detail, but there is an interesting, impossibly tense experience to be had. It's pretty much the opposite of a power fantasy.

Quake is a mood piece with nothing below it's surface.

The fact that it has no story or direction is a valid criticism given the solid framing of the previous two games by id.

It's not some solidified vision outside of the sound design, it's a game that's more notable for it's influence and engine than it is for the gameplay itself. Maybe you like Quake's dueling combat better, but it kind of conflicts with a lot of the tight, claustrophobic levels. It's not really scary and it's not really conducive to fun either.

Weapon pickups for Booster is now something a little more than just a sign. Now they're actual chips that she slots in and somehow gets a weapon from them.
Maybe they contain the schematics of a weapon and she constructs it really quickly out of energy-matter conversion and nanomachines?
Or maybe it's fucking magic.

Either way, at the moment when they drop from an enemy they've got a cool little spinning-in-mid-air-and-bouncing-on-the-ground-a-bit effect. When they spawn naturally I'll probably have it so that they're in Megaman X-style capsules that open up when the player gets near.

Melee combat can be difficult, but at least it's satisfying. The mage's starting weapon is a lame pea-shooter, and his second weapon freezes enemies into solid ice, causing them to be in your way, forcing you to switch back to the pea-shooter to blast them to pieces. Well this was more like a "Plasma Homing Missile Gun". I had numerous ideas to rework the BFG but this one is most faithful to both its original use (clearing rooms and mashing bosses) while also providing a higher degree of consistency of damage since it can be very hard to position yourself in Babel for long enough to get a shot off. As a tradeoff it costs 60 to fire and has a lower maximum output than vanilla but it's so much more consistent that it actually feels more powerful when used.
I still do kinda wish I had done the one that vacuums many small enemies then pools their health into a massive beam, but it probably wouldn't be as cool as I imagine it.

Ah man, that sounds really cool. Sucking up the gibs would be humorous, but draining out the lifeforce would just be really cool. Still, all the ideas sound good.

Also, ambushes in Babel make me go boom-boom in my pantaloons.

Sadly, no. And the particles on the red zombie's weapon do not appear, so it makes it harder to guess where it fired.

Glad you're having fun with it. I've gotta hit the hay because I'm tired as hell after work and modding, but I may release another smaller patch-fix soon to change the BFG and add in some of the other tweaks I did in the last few days.
>>4738684
Well I'm surprised enough it even loaded. I'll have to check it out and see what's going on there.

How well balanced is Quake for shotgun starts?

>> No.4738704

>>4738698
Depends on the map, really. On one hand, a lot of vanilla maps include multiple weapon pickups in the map; on the other hand, some of them expect you to take on a start-of-map Shambler or multiple Vores with nothing but your shotfun and 25 shells, and give you more ammo through the map but not the weapons to use them. It's worth noting that while it's possible to shotgun start most maps, it's not really intended; despite the order of the maps in an episode being pretty much random from how they were actually developed, dying in Quake never forces you to restart with nothing like it does in Doom- you just start at the beginning of the map with whatever equipment you had on entering, with your health raised or lowered if you're too low on health or still using a Megahealth on entry.

>> No.4738784

So I've been playing Doom comfortably for around two whole decades now, and only just noticed how awkward a lot of the default weapon sprites/animations are. I've never really paid close attention to them and now the way the shotgun goes from looking like a rectangle to looking like a photo of an actual fucking shotgun when you pump it is really offputting. I've somehow had a completely different mental image of how the guns look this whole time.
How do I go back? I don't want to notice this stuff.

Use Smooth Doom.

>> No.4738828

Use Smooth Doom or Beautiful Doom.

Either will take vanilla graphics, and make them feel more real by adding more frames of animation.
Which is really what happened - for years you were used to choppy animations so they looked alright, but now in age of smooth 60fps they don't feel like enough.

Reworking the HUD! I hated the GitHub build's HUD, but decided to do something a bit fancier. Haven't made all the mugshot frames yet!

Slowly getting the hang of how to calculate the displacement. Also the shader is now turned on/off by the event handler depending on whether there are any visible shock wave actors. Only supports one at a time though at the moment.
