I'm expecting the announcement of Quake Re-spiffy'd and the teaser for a Quake reboot. I'm hoping so fucking hard they keep the horror themes, but I'm mostly just very curious what will happen to Quake Champs.
Releasing a Quake game without multiplayer would be a fucking crime, even if it has a singleplayer focus. But at the same time there are two issues.

Hmmm, not necessarily. In fact, I'd prefer small-ish levels.

I am even thinking of it maybe having something like a "duel" map, where it's just you against an enemy with only fists or only a pistol or something. Just intimate, but intense encounters. There certainly has to be something that has done this concept.
I don't like using the word, and it's not really accurate and will certainly generate the wrong associations, but maybe "survival horror" kinda approximates most closely what I mean.

I'm not sure about that one. Tying the release/2.0 version of Quake Champions with strictly single player title would fit in with current trends of AAA titles with F2P MP. Nothing stops them from copying Halo Infinite here, especially if they're all under Xbox now.
>>8047431
Yeah, they had a rough time after Prey 2. MachineGames had a good start with Wolfenstein series and we've seen where it went after Old Blood, so I think the reverse could happen... By that, I mean a new Quake game from them being good. Not having a terrible debut, please no.
Also, I forgot to mention one thing: I would be surprised if this new Quake (if real) isn't a Xbox exclusive.
>>8047478
Nice.
>>8047519
As >>8047523 said with all the evidence that started to surface, I wouldn't be surprised if a re-release of Quake will be released literally today or in a few days.
As for the actual new title in the series... Well, it may or may not happen. Timing is great for the announcement, but we might as well just get more attention towards Champions. I wouldn't mention that rumor with female protagonist because I just don't trust it. It doesn't fit with the formula that Wolfenstein and DOOM followed and instead sounds like more of a inside joke that was thrown at the guy for the lulz.

Computer monitors were different from TVs since the time you got to choose between connecting your computer to an existing TV and a dedicated on-desk monitor that cost additional money. Arcade screens were not intended to be used for reading a lot of sharp text and looking at sharp graphs, and were often just TVs anyway.

>>8046275
Later big screens in certain low resolutions placed lines at some noticeable distance from each other. Probably depended on single scan and double scan among other things. You could not make the beam spot arbitrary big to match the intended physical pixel size at any resolution.

I think a little bit of blur to make the colored rectangles less razor sharp and the tiniest grid to slightly darken the image to pretend you have phosphors is enough. Something like barrel distortion is only needed for making stylized images and videos, you don't even notice it when playing.

Your opinion always seems to boil down to "it's their ball and they can take it home if they want". I mean, no shit. But they're also the biggest kid in the game and they know that. As for the agreement not to advertise, it's not an agreement at all. It's an ultimatum with vague boundries. They didn't go on the DW forums saying "fuck this place, go to doomwrboards!" It was in their wad. It's as much advertising as acknowledging the author's for their work is.
For the cacowards, they're supposed to be awards to highlight the best of the doom community. If you can make something good enough that even someone who hates you politically has to agree it's among the best... If course you want that. For one it's validation of your work, despite your character. And for two it means outreach that your ad ridden outdated board can't manage. Also - Does the direct hit from a Plasma-Shaft's ball-lightning and/or splash from a near-miss counts code-wise as an explosive weapon dmg-type in regards to the Shamblers proggramed resistances?

1) Make another site, mirror all known wads/releases. Put some effort into categorizing/metadata/tagging.
2) Make the site simple but pleasant to use, good search feature, etc
3) Have a simple forum (not invision, phpbb, vbulletin, but something simpler, more bespoke). No support for avatars, post counts, or any other cancer.
4) Ban all off-topic posting outside a single off-topic forum.
5) Declare rigid rules around off topic posting - no posting anything knowingly offensive, no posting anything indicating youve taken offense at something. Anyone breaking these rules gets banned from the off-topic board.
6) Maintain this website for several years and watch it grow. When other "communities" implode, your bastion of doom will be vindicated as one of the few archives and project hubs untainted by off topic bullshit such as politics and melodrama.

Anyway, a simple vote system where someone with an account with a certain amount of activity can vote a topic into the retard board or post hell or whatever would be simple enough. Not a bad port but it has some problems. The mouse feels better than Quakespasm/Spiked in terms of latency but you can't look all the way up which really sucks. Sound design seems a little janky. Movement is not as good for bunnyhopping, I think because you can't enter +speed in console, so it uses autorun movement as opposed to +speed movement which maintains momentum better. Oh well. I'm looking forward to Quakespasm/Spiked being updated for this.

The new episode seems good so far. It feels like a typical decent community made level pack made for Arcane Dimensions but it's strapped by vanilla gameplay.

All round nice release from them, after all it's "free". I don't think I've ever launched Quake before via Steam and it's been sitting there unused since I first picked it up for convenience so it's a nice release from them. For kids that aren't into Quake and don't know about the source ports this should bring a new crowd of them in so that's nice. Imo Bethesda did a good job.

Oh, it's stupid that they didn't allow you to bind your weapon keys via the menu, no kid is gonna know about binding impulses and crap via the menu. w/e

I can't believe such quality episode as Dimension of the Machine could come out officially. It's a little unnatural even, going to that after main Quake campaign and even DOPA.
The "unofficial 6th episode" Epochs of Enmity was more restrained, plus it followed regular continuous episode structure, which I like.

It's based on PS1 version, for starters, and levels showcased in the trailer pretty much don't show Saturn elements despite the advertising, even where there are supposed to be some. If that was true it would have more resolution options and have fixed some of the things Portable Edition already had. It just doesn't feel right. The KEX engine thing was done later on after the initial port which is where most of the problems come in.
It was likely done for the KEX, and the OG port still had some issues.

The models are significantly better than most we have ever seen before, they fit the game perfectly. A brand new episode is cool too. But if you are here, this won't impress you much cause custom modding can get you the same experience if not better for the most part. For casuals, it's better than nothing. Even if they play on console. Also it's not perfect, the multiplayer kind of lags, quakeworld is WAY better. But overall still captures quake.

If you own quake on steam already you also get it for free, if not you can pirate it or buy a quake steam key for pocket change from greenmangaming or other sources. Not to mention Quake has been given away for free before.

Solid 7/10 for me.

repostan from /v/

>They fucked up with the physics.

>I can't remember the specifics, but because of rounding errors and physics being tied to framerate, the best framerate for quake 1 was 72 FPS. In the new engine, there's 2 FPS related commands. One is cl_enginefps, which regulates the RENDERING framerate, and the other is cl_enginehz, which regulates the game logic. This implies they separated the physics and rendering framerates. However cl_enginehz caps at 60, and lower values just have a timescale effect. I recorded a short clip in vanilla and remaster client that shows how different jumping and air acceleration is. I thought I had just gotten awful at strafing, however after hopping on joequake and hitting this strafe first try I realized it was the shitty client lmfao. I should run some more tests in vanilla clients at different framerates too, I guess. cl_enginefps doesn't seem to have any effect on physics.

just played through vanilla quake with a couple of bros and had a blast. turning off friendly fire made rockets and grenades do no damage to yourself, which was really too powerful but it was funny just launching each other around haphazardly.
just started the new episode and its great so far (though i thought all of the mission packs/unofficial expansions were really good for quake, so take that as it is). my favorite so far is the scifi mining facility that slowly turns into a spooky chtonic temple where you get the astrologers rune.

if you try a source port. Stuff like GZDoom/LZDoom will auto detect your Doom steam files and add them.
So when it opens you can just select which one to play. Also GZ/LZ Doom has tons of graphics options. So you can make it look like anything. If you're cool with the unity port and the wads they have available than why not.
But if you do decide to try a source port. I'd say try either GZ or LZ Doom. If you want also maybe PRBoom+ Umapinfo or DSDA Doom. These ports also have the ability to change around what it looks like DSDA Doom even has settings to make it look like GZDoom lmao.
