>best reason to buy saturn is its great console ports of arcade games
>every exclusive worth playing has either been re-released on another platform or it's Panzer Dragoon Saga

So since arcade emulation/fpga has gotten so good there's no reason to play the inferior saturn ports, and you can play stuff like radiant silvergun or guardian heroes on newer, more convenient hardware, is there really any reason to own one of these things outside of playing PDS?

kek yeah that made me laugh too. the yabasanshiro dev seemed to like the RP3+ quite a lot and even made an update for the standalone with it in mind, so I'm hoping he'll be willing to do the same with standalone on RP4/Pro.

I don't get this thing that's often said in these threads where "SoA never made any good video games" and I do agree that SoJ was the one that made most of the Genesis' iconic library, and it's most beloved titles... but SoA did make good stuff too, just not as consistently as SoJ did.

N64 has Mario, Zelda and pretty much every one of Nintendo's major IPs at the time with the sole exception of Metroid, for some reason, so in a lot of ways it was a 3D SNES... but with less support from 3rd parties, that all went to PS1, as a result of that the PS1 fanbase, which back then and still today with the PS5 is mostly composed of people that don't consider video games to be their main hobby, often would play and own very different stuff, since pretty much every genre had tons of options, with most starting out in this generation too, which means there was no earlier reputation to sit on, unlike the N64 where most genres had an established juggernaut that people gravitated towards, and smaller titles had to work for it a lot more. N64 is just closer to video game culture...

P.S. I was a PS1 kid, and rarely ever saw a N64 in person, which is a shame, anyways while many do consider the cartridges to have been a mistake, I mostly emulate N64 over PS1 now due to that, I mean, the ROM size for titles that are essentially the same can be way smaller, which is fantastic.

I need some advice... are there any 3rd party USB or Bluetooth SEGA Saturn controllers that work on GNU/Linux? All of the ones I've found mention Windows and MacOS, and sometimes Steam, we do have Proton, but I don't know if it'd work for a controller...

Well... you know what? I think you're right, maybe I shouldn't have phrased it with the word "every" as it isn't true, there really wasn't a PS1 Zelda, Star Fox or Mario Party, besides mediocre clones, and obviously PS1 didn't have Pokémon, which was a craze at the time, though I consider the N64 Pokémon titles to pale in comparison to the GB and GBC stuff at that time, anyways while there wasn't a proper F-Zero clone, PS1 was still probably the console to go for if you were into racing in general, due to Gran Turismo, Need for Speed and Ridge Racer all being there, also while GoldenEye is a classic, PS1 had its fair share of good 1st person shooters.

I think the main issue with N64 against the PS1 is that, besides the classic Nintendo IPs that were always superb, 3rd party support felt 10x weaker than on PS1, most likely due to the use of cartridges, which I prefer actually, so regardless of what your favorite genres were, you'd usually have a ton more options to experience on PS1 than on N64, where you'd get Nintendo's own offers, which were usually excellent, but then that'd be it, while on PS1 you'd have option after option to rent and try out, N64 usually got the short end of the stick on multiplatform titles too, again probably due to developers getting lazy with the cartridge limitations.

Anyways, both is the best option, if you're a major Nintendo fan and really wants their IPs then you go for N64, but if you're an average video game fan in general, PS1's most likely to have more options for your favorite genres. Still, it was a terrific generation and its a shame to see it often get tossed aside as "not aging well" or something... just a shame SEGA dropped the ball on the Saturn's US support, could've been an even more awesome generation here in the west if all 3 had a proper fight instead of what we got.

For Saturn you have to use Yabasanshiro 2 standalone for decent performance, so no shaders. Also unfortunately there are still a couple edge cases like Grandia during battles, Burning Rangers, and Dragon Force 2 that still don't run fullspeed. Everything else I've tried and seen runs fullspeed in yabasanshiro 2 though thankfully. Dreamcast can all run fullspeed without frameskip, at least in the standalone emulators.

>nicely enough
...for you - i.e. a subjective standard. Objectively, emulators run better on Wii and are simpler to run and Wiis cost the same or often less than Dreamcasts. I love Dreamcast but it's not the ideal emulation machine.

>>2120171
>It can run Crash so it's gud.
RetroArch is for lazy assholes who can't or won't be fucked to tweak individual emulators for their systems which makes it weird that supposed Linux mustard-tacers are advocating it over XP as a platform for emulation. which makes me suspect Linux distros are getting poseur friendly.

Mednafen's a good core and everything but there's literally no logical defense for claiming a pre-configured front end 9and an ugly one) like RetroArch is "the best".

Just referring to RetroArch as an emulator is, in itself, enough to give you away as not really knowing that much about emulators.

Saturn was a big deal when it was released, there was more buzz about it before its release than Playstation for sure but Sega made some big mistakes with their surprise launch strategy and Sony managed to completely outmaneuver them with their lower retail price and huge advertising blitz using dat Sony money.

They also just plain made the best system for the time, with the right opportunities for the broadest selection of developers. Hell they didn't even have any first party games. Their original pack-in games was also available on Saturn! But better marketing, better prices, and better publishing was like a perfect storm.

All those video game companies weren't prepared for a huge entertainment company to come full force guns blazing to the marketplace.

I do still like Saturn though, and it did much better in Asia. Sega made huge huge mistakes in the West during the late 90s.
