Having played a few levels of Hedon, it's actually pretty good despite the ugly character and enemy sprites. The maps are great and the underground world is cool and like a more vibrant arx fatalis. The balance of combat and investigation is good too.

Looks like for some reason my Zandro start skipping text screens (you know, that thing before secret levels, Dead Simple and so on). Though I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything, but for the last week I've been messing with mods and custom maps (UDMF and all other source port magic), so may be it's some leftovers from some sloppy mod/map. So, where to look? I don't remember at all if/how text screen cam be turned off. I looked at ZDoom Wiki, but there is no info about it (though plenty about how to change it).

some of the map packs I have will play in either one but the framerate in the later gz ports is really, really bad.
The one from the picture works under prb+ and its as smooth as jelly. Problem is im getting those vanilla infinitely tall actors and I cant turn it off. Figured if they had fixes for being able to go under hanging corpses, and jumping, and vertical aiming, then they'd have a fix for this too (eg, something by default off but you could turn on voluntarily).

I'm playing Arcane Dimensions and after finishing the map Slipgate Conundrum (ad_s1m1), I'm spawned at the beginning of Castle of the Damned (vanilla E1M2), instead of going back to the AD hub or starting another AD level.

Very cool map, was glad to see you not sticking to just the episode 1 enemies as you often see people do. Doom already has a pretty low enemy variety compared to its sequel. Shame that since it's his oc donutsteel to the point the creator's username is the main character I doubt he's ever going to let another artist take care of the character art.

One of the core premises of HD is the idea of monsters which would be a very real and serious threat against a more realistic person.
It's a realistic, tactical shooter, but with horrible supernatural demons as enemies, which isn't something you can find in a lot of other places, usually those kinds of games go for more mundane enemies.
The demons can pull a lot of very nasty tricks on you that a human couldn't, which makes things much more interesting.

That said, the player is still pretty superhuman, not only can you sustain some pretty stupendous, crippling injuries, but there's actually magic means for you to heal and repair those injuries, which otherwise you couldn't with any of the available medical equipment, and that's not even getting into spiritual armor, or the insane bullshit you can do with Berserk Packs.

Hideous Destructor is a lot more realistic than regular Doom, but it's still pretty fantastical and extreme.

ADS and reloading is fine if you design your gameplay around it.
Reloading is good if you A), make the reload fast and doesn't waste the player's time, B), make the weapons more powerful to make up for that short pause.
Ironsights and scopes make sense on weapons where they're worthwhile (carbines and rifles where sometimes being able to take better aimed shots at a distance makes sense).

As said, these features can be turned off. What really is bothersome with Brutal Doom's gameplay is the difficulty though, the weaker tiers of enemies are made harder, which is good, but the stronger enemies are a LOT easier, which I think is bad, you need to go one way or the other, either make the game easier across the board as a feature, or harder across the board as a feature.

Guess you stopped somewhere around 18 version. Literally, the only monster that wasn't made harder is archvile (there is a reason why he looks different). Caco straifing at a mere sound of rocket launcher (even if you're just zooming), like zombies. Hell nobles either throw a lot more fireballs or move faster (like, a Hell lot faster, almost at pinkie's speed), and they, along with revenants, can throw a zombie/imp at you, which is almost guaranteed insta-death if your health or armor is not about 200. Fatso will literally roast you in a couple of seconds if you try to punch/saw him, even if you're on megasphere. Cybie will stomp you (=insta-death) when he's not shooting faster rockets. Same with Mastermind. Pain elemental will punish you with splash damage in his death if you try to melee him.
It has been made so even the Knee-Deep in the Dead could provide a lot more challenge.

The original Doom was considered a sort of horror action for a long time, whatever it's intention. The fact that most people at that point had not played a first person shooter meant that the early maps were them getting used to the controls, running from monsters, creeping around corners, and dying a lot.
Coupled with montser closets and the fact that you find new and stronger monsters as you go, you never really knew what to expect. Regardless of it's intentions, it definitely had horror elements.
Then as you got better and better you started to learn the tricks and do faster maneuvers and dodges, and the game starts throwing tougher encounters at you with more monsters. It goes full action once you know what to expect, and the intensity shifts from uncertainty to adrenaline. It's still one of the one games that makes me move my head in real life to dodge a rocket in-game.

The game is old now and most newcomers to it have played newer first person shooters or scarier horror games. So all that remains to set it apart is the speed. Not many games out there compete with Doom for pure movement speed (Tribes, Dusk, Quake if you're good at bunnyhopping) so that's what sets it apart now. Whereas before it was a bit of everything to a player because nothing else had done any of it better - or at all.

Earlier I made the decision that the Doomslayer's pistol would use ammo, and while I think this was for the best, it's kinda shitty losing out on ammo for the Hydra Repeater when using it. I might go the DAKKA route and make it so picking up ammo in general gives you some pistol ammo. And also let players hammer the fire button to shoot faster.

If I do this, would you guys want to see a pistol ammo tracker on his HUD somewhere? I recently added a Doom 64 style ammo counter for your currently equipped weapon, and I'm not sure if you need to know how much pistol ammo you have at all times or just stick with showing it when you have the sword out.

GZdoom has no chromatic aberration feature, so its probably the lens distortion effect that's twisting your 'tism. It adds a very slight blur and chromab effect to the edges of the screen, I play on a 32" monitor that's quite close to me so I kind of like having the sides of the screen like that. The chromatic aberration effect is so subtle I hadn't actually noticed it until now, but then again i've never been as bothered by things like that and dof, motion blur etc...

I work at printshop and people bring me low-res images (like thumbnails they pulled from the internet, literally 240-360p shit) to print as actual photos all the damn time.
I show them on-screen how shitty it would look, and they say "looks fine to me"
I say "OK lol" and print them. It looks as shitty as an 4x6 inch print as you may expect. They look at them and say "Yep, totally fine IDK why you were bothered",and they genuinely believe that

The same story goes for refresh rates on old CRT monitors - some people are not bothered by 50-60 Hz, and could not tell any difference between 60/75/100hz, while I was always able to determine refresh rate by glance and couldnt wotk on anything below 85hz 'cause my eyes would get tired really fast otherwise

CA always bothered the hell out of me due to the way it both subtly blurs the image and adds color banding to the edges of every object. The subtle edge blur forces my eyes to try and focus, while there is nothing to actually focus on. This strains the eyesight quite a lot, and makes me notice the color baning even more which irks my "graphical artifact" sense, and since it's everywhere on the image to varying degree it becomes incredibly irritating

Another thing that makes me angry is that many fanart artist feel the need to ruin their images with CA to "add flavour" - many otherwise good images were ruined by something that pro photographers always considered a problem of a shitty lens or improperly set up camera and tried to get rid of, even if only in post processing

Why would someone want to imitate a shittier lense, beyond pretending it's being filmed on a shitty home-camera, is beyond me

The typical shotgun is a 12-Gauge, which is pretty large in bore diameter compared to any pistol or rifle you'll see commonly, now consider that there's two of those big barrels next to each other.

I dont think they're shooting common 12 Gauge shotgun shells. Based on performance its either 10 Gauge or 8 Gauge.
I dont think the pistol and chaingun are firing 9mm ammo either.

UAC is a defense contractor so everything they arm their security and marines with can be custom made including the ammunition. Which makes sense if you get crazy demands from people on committee who dont know what they're doing.

The other thing I wanna figure out is how to make monsters able to take damage from their own species but NOT infight because of it.
Sorta like emulating Ogres from quake 1, if they hit each other or themselves with grenades they take damage. But they dont attack each other.
Id really like to give revenant rockets and mancubus fireballs splash damage. Not much but enough to kill you if you're low health and just barely dodged it. They either have explosion sound effects or explosion impact graphics so I think they should do some splash damage like an explosion too. They're the kings of starting infighting with other species so it just makes that easier.

Im also planning on making rockets, incl cyber spit out a bunch of shrapnel without changing the splash damage to increase their stun potential (1 point of damage is still a stun check). So if a Cyber gets hit by another cyber's rocket I need to make sure they wont infight because of the shrapnel hits.

Things like this is why we should seriously be pushing for old version compatibility for all of the mods being made.
It should be a community effort to discourage modders from doing the bleeding edge bullshit.
GZDoom 2.4 should probably be the benchmark for it just to make it a fair challenge.
I mean people can play things on more modern versions of they want but that should be optional and only if the care about those bells and whistles.
I guess its just the same stuff that applies to other source ports should definitely apply to GZD too.

What special about 3.4.1?
Im mainly targeting "before the graphics update" so I guess 3.25 would be fine. But the software mode in 2.4 displays colors in actual 8bit which keeps the retro vibe available while still allowing for the coding stuff.
I think in 3.25 the software mode isnt actually 8bit even if it honors the 8bit graphics. Which means if you have some 24bit pngs loaded in a wad they just display as is without being remapped to the existing playpal.
Although the remapping looks muddy thats part of the point of wanting to keep it. Going with hardware or truecolor is still possible to turn on anyway.

The other reason I mentioned 2.4 is its the version just before gz went to the 3.x range. While 3.0 and 3.1 had some kinda glitch that made them slow down terribly and that was fixed by 3.25.

Even if the challenge of your job is fulfilling, you might not like the consequences for failure. A working sim gives you a no-bullshit way to get the same satisfaction and run things the way you want without some dickweed breathing down your neck.
For instance driving a forklift for me irl is a bit nerve wracking, because I don't do it commonly - but it is fun when no one is around. A forklift sim might give similar satisfaction without the hassle of worrying about damaging anything, or what-have-you...
