It was pretty much just the Arachnotron and Spidermind that had a fix applied, as their huge hitboxes caused errors with hit detection with the fist and chainsaw. You could probably argue that the wide span of their legs makes it hard to reach for hitting the parts that actually matter, and that'd kinda sorta make sense, but on the other hand, you could also argue that it doesn't.
Anyway, it wasn't intended behavior, and just kind of happened due to oversight.
Personally, I like the fix.
All that said, other unintended behaviors were the Voodoo Doll effect, and the Revenant's rockets are only heatseaking on random, as an oversight makes it randomly skip making them homing; they were actually intended to always be homing, but the behavior was never fixed, as the end effect was better.
There's sourceports which have fixed those bugs, and nobody liked that. In my opinion, I think things like these should be a compatibility option, just like many other monster behaviors.
