I would just play a good wad instead. The official games are ass compared to any decent community made wad. I recommend Going Down, Valiant or /vr/'s own Ad Mortem.
I don't usually like playing with mods like Brutal Doom since they change the gameplay in ways the map designer didn't intend, often breaking maps and making them trivial or unbeatable. Although for Doom 2 the maps are poorly designed anyway so it doesn't matter.

It's fine enough to have some fun with it even if ends up being atepping stone to trying other mods.

That said, it's supposedly getting it's v22 beta release tomorrow so maybe hold off for that since it's supposed to perform a whole lot better.

Just about done with the first chapter of Doom 2, and man, what's with the drop in quality of maps and music compared to the first game? This Mcgee guy somehow made every map look brown like quake 2, and really, REALLY, likes making big empty halls with one texture on them. The Petersen designed maps which I liked in the first game are now all just one big trap. It all seems so amateur. Was this picked up in the reviews back in the day? What went wrong?

>> No.10460353

>>10460341
Well you can see the current reload frames just up above that post. To pull something like that off I'd need to extend those frames out and add the hammers for all that.
Really I didn't have plans for making a hammer cock animation but I had a friend convince me to make a proof of concept.
So to give myself a break I'll either save the animation for equipping the Thunderbuss, or have it at the end of the reload and have it something you cancel with primary fire.

>If you've got any ideas let me know.
Please make the B.A.G. toy appear in at least one SP level - the secret maps would be perfect to showcase it's capabilities.
Also the Punisher final gun is only good at killing yourself on most occasions - I blame the explosion sprite being so tiny compared to its splash radius, how about try reducing the self-harm AoE somewhat while also buffing its projectile speed, RoF and damage a small bit as compensation for the reduced splash damage (a purely situational factor in seldom freak incidents out of itself if we're honestly speaking)?
^as an optional drawback for making it more fun to use, the Punisher runs on a heat gauge that makes it fire at half speed after 10-12 shots of constant fire, with a 3-4 second cooldown
I need a reminder if this gun kills you exactly like the Q1 Shaft does if you try to shoot it underwater - if it does, please change it to the way how the AD PlasmaGun just refuses to fire when submerged
IIRC there are some early missions in which you can find ammo for the Punisher but never the gun itself, even in secret areas - any chances of fixing that jarring mistake?

I was already thinking of make it into the designated 'rocket jump' weapon since the Vasquez bots appear to do that.
I'll need to do some testing to determine further buffs, but it should very much outperform rockets with how rare the ammo is.

Nope.
>IIRC there are some early missions in which you can find ammo for the Punisher but never the gun itself, even in secret areas - any chances of fixing that jarring mistake?
That would be like adding the lightning gun to techbase levels with enforcers just because they drop cells. I'll need to play through the game again to be sure, but I don't think Malice takes away your weapons and ammo at any point, so you'll at least keep the ammo until you find a punisher. Decorate is better if you want to create more advanced modifications while being compatible with Zandronum, the most popular multiplayer client for Doom. ZScript is better if you're making advanced modifications and do not care about Zandronum, and do not care that your mod will be exclusive to GZDoom.

>Decorate is better if you want to create more advanced modifications while being compatible with Zandronum, the most popular multiplayer client for Doom
You should add that it's a very old Decorate variant that needs to be used for Zandro.
And that you can use Decorate as a base for making Dehacked stuff via Decohack, which is way easier than trying to make shit in Dehacked right away.

>> No.10461242

>>10461184
dehacked has the widest port compatibility but is very limited in scope, as of MBF21 a lot of the limits have been removed but it still can't do much more than make new enemies and weapons that still work in very doom-like ways
decorate is easier to write and capable of much more extensive modifications but is only implemented by zdoom and its child ports
zscript is a full-blown programming language that obsoletes decorate at the most basic level, but it's completely exclusive to gzdoom
if you're making a mapset and you want a couple of new enemies or simple new weapons, dehacked is the only one supported by any non-zdoom port
if you're making a gameplay mod that changes the player in significant ways or you want to add more complex mechanics, you want decorate or zscript
if you aren't interested in putting up with zandronum compatibility for multiplayer (it's a pain in the ass and doesn't even have full decorate support) then just use zscript because any other zdoom-based port is just plain dead at this point

Dehacked is not "coding" like Decorate is "coding" or ZScript.
Dehacked is literally hacking around in the existing states and switching them around.

And the moment a Boom compatible port emerges that can into Decorate, Dehacked has become truly obsolete.

A Pentium would be a massive step above a 486. Looking past Limit Removing Vanilla stuff, which usually plain crashes the original .exe, anything that still adheres to the original static limits is almost never NOT running right at the edge, which means way low framerates.
Mind, iD needed to cut down geometry in some of Doom 2's levels to ensure acceptable framerates on 486 and 386 machines, and Doom 2 was never anywhere close to the static limits.

Custom content which "targets original hardware" does exist, but it's a vanishingly rare minority and has been so for over 20 years, just keeping under the static limits is enough of a self-imposed challenge for those who don't do Limit Removing.

Knee-Deep In Knee-Deep In ZDoom is pretty impressive stuff, but it'd be a slideshow on a 486, it targets the software only, not the hardware.
Fuck, looking at old Final Doom, both TNT and Plutonia have some spots which run past the original static limits (such as the outdoors area in Mt. Pain), which is why Doom 95, which raised some of those, was necessary to begin with.

Doom Zero is one of the few of the more recent sets which actually does aim for Doom 2 tier geometry, and that's as a stylistic choice. Then you have the slightly older DTWIDs, which were made with the intent to look like 1993 era and 1994 era maps that imitated the original iD level designer's design sensibilities, so again, a stylistic choice.

Looking at big name megawads from the late 90s and early 2000s, they might adhere to static limits, but many would not allow for a consistent 20fps with a 486, which would be Doom 2's baseline.

It does, because it's more flexible for modding while giving you the same practical end result anyway. GzDoom will still give you the same spans of numbers for damage, for instance a Revenant ball can do as little as 10 points of damage to the player as a minimum roll, or a whopping fucking 80 for a maxed one, just like in the original .exe. (Setting aside if the player is wearing armor, which would reduce this damage, which also works the same as in the original).

There's plenty of times where I'm running into some kind of niche quirk or problem relating to GzDoom, and I shake my fist in the direction of Germany, but I frequently see people make complaints about GzDoom which are either absolute nothingburgers, or sometimes imaginary. Even my own complaints are sometimes miniscule shit, having non-blocking duplicates of the Doom 2 hanging bodies made, I discover that Doom's hanging body props all have special, undocumented offset rules in GzDoom, so making just a duplicate with the same stock frames has them come out fucked, and I need to make duplicates of those frames with their own offsets so that they're identical to the blocking ones.
That's a very minute issue, but it's at least an ACTUAL one, not hearsay and conjecture.

Woof & Nugget default to "smooth pixel scaling", meaning every scaled pixel is blurred unless you play at exactly 1600x1200 resolution (or 3200x2400, etc)
smooth_scaling 0 will make it so the blur isn't applied, but the pixel blocks will vary in size (4x5, 5x6)

With tools to assist, you can do some ridiculous bullshit, go see ZeroMaster's TAS Pacifist run of Icon Of Sin.

Without tools, there's no humanly possible way to perceive nor usefully manipulate the pRNG, it can easily index many multiple times per tic. A tic is a 35th of a second, with Doom using tics for a consistent internal timer across different sorts of hardware (which not all games did even many years later, instead leaving things up to your clockspeed, which really should not have been).

GT Interactive went bust absolutely ages ago, and iD Software has moved from the Town East Towers long ago as well, might even have moved another time after that.

I guess you could try calling the number if you're in or near Texas (I'm assuming you don't want to pay for some long distance call if you're not), and then see who picks up. Possibly it goes to some completely unrelated company which is housed there now, or optionally ZeniMax actually procured that number for whatever reason, and it directs to one ot their lines.

Some human-played real-time speedruns use RNG manipulation, even when it's rerolled every frame. This is typically done by restarting the console and reloading the save file using several frame-perfect inputs.
A couple examples I'm aware of are some of the pokemon games (to manipulate the starting stats of the starter), and Super Mario RPG (for the Booster Tower boss).
There's others examples but I forget.
Probably not possible in DOOM or most other PC games since there are too many factors outside the game which will often affect RNG (OS and programs running, varying hardware, etc)

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to make 100 new monsters with crazy new bullet hell projectile attacks and replace a weapon or all weapons with something new without projectile limitations (you can make a spreadfire gun if you want), you can do it on dehacked thanks to mbf21. If you want to make a new weapon without replacing an old weapon or want to make something less doom influenced like rpg-elements, cutscenes or elements from modern shooters like CoD, you need zscript.

Dehacked is insanely stable. Most heaviest dehackery stuff from 90s still works on every port. Zscript is less stable. It only works on gzdoom and might break on a single update. So we have 2022 zscript based stuff that no longer works on 2023 versions of gzdoom,if the author does not update it.

What are possible applications behind "Pistol Start" tag on submission form when in general practice mappers unable and don't bother to enforce it, when it's all to the full preference of the player? Seems redundant, to be somewhat pedantic here.

Alternately, within some rarer cases, "Ammo Starvation" actually stresses out the need for continuous play and is more apparent design choice.

Checkbox may stay, but it's more up to a whim rather than a conscious decision of a booru submitter to select it.

He can't map, he can't organize, he can't communicate, he can't bundle wads up by himself, everything he started had to be done by somebody else. He is incredibly moronic and went as far as telling everyone that he identified as a woman in one of the community project threads (lmao). I guess it's for wads that are intended to be pistol started, as opposed to continuous play. Some older wads aren't pistol start-able, really, so maybe it would've been better to have a continuous play tag as it's rarer that a wad isn't pistol start-able.

This isn't something that much of a problem to focus on out from the start, petty level tweaks like this can wait for the fan-patches initial completion first.

There is not a gaming community without noobs and amateurs. In Doom there's fair share of them in all communities, sure on dw, even some on here. It seems you are having a bitch fit with one these never heards, but it's hardly worthy of discussion or hardly even a good example of forum drama, but just a personal conflict you got yourself into. Getting entangled with such things is no pro behaviour either. So no, this is no '/vr/ vs. dw' thing. It's just one noob vs. other noob.

Beat Turok 3 remastered.
It's basically a bugfixed version of the original game with a XBLA-like texture rework.
Is it worth the price Nightdive is selling it for? Fuck no.
They also didn't fix the Cerebral Possessor not triggering enemy spawns when controlling an enemy, so it's still basically useless.
The "buy this game" monitor texture easter egg was also replaced with Shodan which is understandable since it would look like stealth shilling otherwise.
Enemies would also respawn in thin air with a quake styled teleport effect, which I do not remember being in the original game at all.
Overall 7/10, the original is a 4/10 for reference.

It had to be since they already delayed SiN's remaster. As the number of titles that could receive re-release or remaster treatment is getting reduced daily (especially with the likes of SNEG grabbing anything they could reach), Nightdive is in a position where they (I would assume) feel the need to prioritize outside projects to internal ones as they can allow themselves to hold off the latter. Some of them are a lot better at preservation, while Nightdive's main thing is using their list of IP licenses to convince other studios to let them have more.

Nightdive tends to create weird amalgamations of stuff from different ports of games on their own engine, when they're not doing shady stuff like what they did to System Shock Portable or the Blade Runner shit.

Definitely. Like I said, Digital Eclipse who share the nu-Atari roof with Nightdive now, seemingly been doing pretty decent job at all of their re-releases.
>while Nightdive's main thing is using their list of IP licenses to convince other studios to let them have more.
Fair point. I was about to ask "They just own System Shock & SiN, no?", but then spotted that you meant "licenses". Bethesda projects and Blade Runner are good eye candy in that regard.
>they're not doing shady stuff like what they did to System Shock Portable or the Blade Runner shit.
Aren't they also bring some modded stuff into System Shock 2 (in case that's what you're referring to) with authors' blessings?

>>10467225
I do recall them having not that great of a reputation, but still think it's important to recall everyone on that front. Especially if they're terrible so you can hold them accountable. Speaking of which (as we do watch upon gaming preservation here just a little), I really hope that soon enough there would be proper discussions about brand nostalgia and how companies (nu-Atari & nu-Apogee the first come to mind, especially since they just acquired respective brands) utilize them to form parasitic relationship with an audience as people are often too stupidely sentimental towards developers & publishers.
Or how pic related meme is still pretty much relevant to a point where such simplification could lead to fueling elitism and entitlement among known industry figures (like John St. John sperging out over Gianni doing Duke shit and... hell, basically Daikatana).

For the second one, you can do pretty much everything right from the start, once you please the final primarch, no matter the order, the game will move on to the ending.
And I enjoy the combat. If you're not playing on the highest difficulty I imagine it would get painfully easy, as even on that it isn't all very hard. But it's cool enough. And big blue orc amazon is hot.

ultimate doom = doom + episode 4. as complete as it gets.
final doom = plutonia + tnt, two third-party expansions.
sigil is unofficial episode 5 for doom 1. it's a separate wad.
no rest for the living (nerve.wad) is an 8-map "episode" for doom 2, came with console ports and bfg edition.
all of that stuff is included with the unity port now, I'm pretty sure.

crispy is fine for vanilla stuff, but it won't play boom wads, so you'll eventually need another port to play ancient aliens and the like.

Crispy is supposed the most hassle-free option for familiarizing yourself with the original games, all things you listed are supported plus 'No Rest for the Living'. GZDoom on other hand has many open-ended features which steeply deviate from original set rules and looks, first and foremost providing a toolbox for fan-game developers rather than a way to play Doom as it is. I guess turning off crouching, jumping and mouselook (and setting Doom (strict) compatibility mode) is good enough option for starters if I'm not missing anything, but fully replicating the original is a moot idea. With Crispy you should only have high resolution and modern keybinds in its out-of-box settings and nothing else, plenty of optional cosmetic switches if "playing in the box" on modern wide monitor somehow irks you.

Both ports should work with digitally sold distributions, but you might have less problems seeking the original 1.9 wad files (look in OP post). Sigil is freely available on idgames archive.

got it, thanks. as for the 1.9 files I used the first link of the rentry site in the OP, assuming those are the latest versions and would be Ultimate Doom and all the rest of it
all I know without dropping them into a source port to check is that DOOM.WAD is 11.8 MB and DOOM2.WAD is 13.9 MB, if that sounds right. I grabbed the Ultimate Doom off gog-games to check the size of its wad and it was the same, so probably all fine

Those slashes look like they feel really good. I especially like the downward chop and the two handed stab.

Also I pull this shit off with liberal use of Aseprite's layer settings like overlay and soft light, then I paint over stuff with blue and white to make color lighting, if need be I'll also push it through a more limited color palette to make it a little more accurate.

>> No.10469665

I really should get Aseprite.
I'm still using just GIMP, I usually make my animations one frame at a time.
I'm technically cheating by using a model to make a full animation, then taking a picture of each frame then editing the frames into the proper resolution then effects then a color-palette. So I assume Aseprite is less autism than what I'm doing, and what I did before.

It'd be better suited for animations, that's for sure. But TypicalSF, the guy who made the excellent Doomslayer hands I'm using along with a shitload of other really, really good weapon sprites? He uses GIMP for his work. Also I don't think that's cheating, I did something similar for the drawing animation on the Blackjack Baton in Combined_Arms, gif related. It's just fucking weird to be that a lot of stuff is lost on most people who have played it because it became a streamer bandwagon.

Even calling it myhouse.wad is a reference to that trend of mapping your home/place of work/wherevere that pretty much died out after the Columbine media shit demonized the fuck out of it.

>> No.10469880

My one pet peeve is the fact that it kinda relies on comteporary internet references, hence the liminal spaces stuff, backrooms, that one lost media song and Shrek.
That alone kinda affects the "authorship" of the overall project.
Maybe it's my brain still affected by people once going "9gag is fucking cancer" but there has to be a reason why some of us wanted to avoid memes and looked up to people who did the same.
>>10469876
The name also being misleading because all of the werid stuff happens in the PK3 version, while "wad" is just a house.
>>10469880
I think Doom is in a spot where 2 things are kinda true at once:
>It has a fanbase capable of doing cool things and even affecting how people remember the series, hence "Doomguy" being treated like an official name for years
>It's a series that everyone talks about how cool it is, even CrowbCat did a positive video about 2016
But these 2 "truths" clash when you see the 99 people in a room feeling the need to talk about Isabelle crossovers and the 1 person bringing up a cool mod, piece of trivia that is actually less known or even a more unique observation.
Because "within" areas of mods and wads, there's already "Anglicized Fanbase Canon" issues like recurring shitty opinions and memes, but you also see people doing things "the way a Doom fan does it" only to have even less references about "the community".
Regardless, at least it's how one should be able to tell when BD hate stops being sincere.

The funny thing about that is it's mostly a small handful of bitter mod developers playing Chinese whispers that try to keep that alive.

For me runner-ups (or silver cacowards now) have always been equally good to cacowards themselves. Usually I like more than half of cacowards and more than half of runner-ups. There's lot of quality content for Doom every year, so picking 10 out of 20 (or 12 out of 24) becomes a matter of personal taste. And I cannot be mad about that since I haven't tried to become a writer myself. I've always been a mapper and lurker, not that much a social guy. (I've been on dw since the end of 90s.)

But anyways, I'm quite excited for upcoming cacowards. It's like a christmas for doomers. I tend to miss out lot of wads, so I always get to play more quality stuff thanks to the cacos.

There's more Entropy? I wouldn't mind a 3rd either, just less marvel-tier lines whenever something happen. If it ever would be made. The amount of talking the protag did in the original EZ was exactly enough. As for SMOD, ReduxFinal. I didn't know which one was THE one so I assumed Final must be. I've played through all of Half-Life about a decade ago and without mods obviously. This time around I wanted to up the action and SMOD helps.

It is. Aren't Hedon and Ion Maiden discuss-able because of their engines? If so, I assume the same must apply to Half-Life, but that definitely is gray.

One of those is a remake of a Super Mario 64 level, the other is the player wedged firmly into a corner looking at a secret. The N64 textures are also horrifically ugly at the best of times.
The worst level is Industrial Reunion, because it's really boxy and has problems with supply levels, but even that's got some decorative brushwork with the reactor and decorative gears.

I'm a Turok 3 autist. Here is the good I've seen so far:
>Enemies spinning in circles is fixed.
>Enemies no longer fade away.
>Nearly every enemy can now be gibbed.
>Blood is like T2 than T3.
>Updated textures for everything. (Launch the game with -useOldTextures if you prefer the original textures)
>Redone OST by the original compose.r
>Missing geomtery, collision, etc is fixed.
>Rooms from the betas (flooded basement & boiler room, original layout for 'To The Subway') have been restored.
>Boss health bars now feel less jank.
>PSG recharge speed buffed.
>Some cutscene angle work has been redone to feel less confusing.
>Aspects tied to frame rate (trains in the city level, cutscene lipsync) are now variable frame rate.
>Movement speed is slightly faster so it feels less of a slog.
>Harder difficulties add new enemy spawns than making the player suffer with less pickups.
>Cerebal Bore projectile speed buffed back to working like T2. (It still only has a limit of one on the screen at a time for some reason)
>Joshua has been fleshed out. (No longer a cheat, has unique character select intro, viewmodel hands fixed than switching between the two characters, proper third person model)
>Raptor secret character. (It's bad)
And here is the bad:
>Collision detection with enemy projectiles is still shit. (might be possible to fix by adjusting the player hitbox with mods since I saw it using developer mode)
>No multiplayer. (May come later since the maps and assets are there)
>Save system reworked so you can't quick save, with checkpoints instead. (Likely to prevent soflock scenarios with the timed sections)
>You CANNOT play as the walker, despite the screenshots suggesting it's been added.

>Depends on

>>10470839
Again, modern remakes are no different from reboots. They're synonyms in huge part because people got hired of hearing about the latter. So developers/publishers decided to add in little snippets of existing project for nostalgia points.
And that's not really a new thing, you just have to look at the likes of film industry. Those two terms were always interchangable: it's just that in some point in the past, game remakers were more of a remasters. Now it's just not the case.
>>10471203
>their new doom clone, Wizordum
It's more of a Catacomb clone and it's developed by Emberheart Games, the developer of a few 3DR platformers like Crystal Caves. He has someone else on the projects as well, but still.
>the fact that they go a bit too far with trying to juice nostalgia
Dude, they've doing since the rebrand and Miller leaving original company. Looks like his arrival is what sparked the obnoxious waves of nostalgia farming like how all those Duke leaks started to happen around the same time as Scott was digging through his old hoarder stashes (he's totally not behind them; wink-wink) for the giveaways that go on to this very day.
I have the same axe to grind against Romero and his company, but at the very least he puts some effort with Sigil and such. Like, I get that it's just easier to fall into that path after failing to do something new multiple times, but at the very least you can be more moderate about this.
>compressing the audio
Really? Haven't noticed that in demo. Not an expert in this though.

Nice blanket judging, ragehead fucktard. Humans are not all the same. Such a statement is like saying all dogs, cats, bears, Horses, and other animals like Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Insects like bees and moths are the same, save for perhaps some outward distinctions. While there are only so many different personality types and such that exist among humans, those differences, similar to literal taxonomic classifications such that of breed, and race/subspecies; however small as it it may be compared to the rest of the mammalian genome, that different percentage is important. Humanity is not "all one".
>terrible slippery slope! They deserve to be treated like shit!
By all means keep on raging like some of the egocentrics among voice actors and movie stars do. Don't get a burst blood vessel or two while you bitch and seethe like a ragehead. I do know for sure that VAs and movie stars (especially lead actors) have issues and in some cases vile skeletons in their closet. EXAMPLES: Woody "pedo scum" Alan, Kirk "rapist and blood on his hands murderer" Douglas", Tara "dense Hebe" Strong, Meryl "preachy cuntface" Streep", Amy "Narcisstic fuckwad Yid" Schumer, Keven "pedo shitbag" Spacey", and also some directors and producers like Dan "Toe shower" Schneider" Harvey Oprah "dipshit goy puppet" Winfrey and Steven "kike past his prime" (((Spielberg))). Even with that being said, how is it right to universally fuck them all over because of you bitterness and anger?
Collectively judging them as all bad people won't make the world a better place won't make the world. How is it a "terrible slippery slope", anyway!?
Pic related is you caught up in your anger and bitterness.
