Goldsrc/source multiplayer just scratches an itch for me that no other FPS games do. They have such a huge range of game modes and mods too; you got Half-Life DM, Counter-Strike, TFC, Day of Defeat, then source had TF2, Saxton Hale, Half-Life 2 DM, Prop Hunt, Ultimate Chimera Hunt, Zombie Panic and others. In terms of MP, I probably got the most mileage out of these engines than any other.

I use crispyDOOM, and when I try to run the ultimate DOOM it doesn't show the fourth episode in the menu when starting a new game. the levels of the fourth episode can be loaded from the console without issue. does anyone know why this is happening, or how to fix it?

Probably owing to shitloads of textures which were added, but never used, like all of OTex, so it should be possible to shrink the filesize down a good bit.

Slade can do that, but you need to be careful with it because it's fucking retarded and don't recognize all the frames in a sequence of animations and stuff like that. If the flat or texture isn't placed directly in a map somewhere, it'll line it up as unused ones ready for you to delete, even if it's part of a flat animation or a switch.

Make a small flat room that has 2 Spider Masterminds in it, and a bajillion barrels surrounding them. Have the door close behind you when you enter, and have the spiderdemons teleport out of the room at that time. Either behind or under each spiderdemon's previous location is a soulsphere. When you pick it up, they teleport back in and shoot your ass, and likely the barrels you're next to, which are packed like a sardine can except where the spiderdemons used to be. The only way to avoid instant explosive death should be to stand still right where the soulsphere spawns after picking it up, and then skipping to the other one. A timer for the door to open begins after the spiderdemons return. Ideally they'll be heavily damaged after eating barrels.

Build engine mapping is in an awkward spot because the tools are extremely archaic (yes they are, I can see you typing your replies now, you Mapster32 apologists), and it's fundamentally less straightforward than Doom and Quake mapping.

To put it roughly, imagine if you tacked on a bunch of janky hacks to a game engine such as Doom's to try to make it do a bunch of things you'd expect Quake to do readily. Stuff like the fake underwater, mid-air walkways, 'stacked' sectors, the way level geometry can kind of warp and shift on the fly, or plain move, and all that.
With a good understanding and effort, you can make some extremely cool shit, but it does not have the incredible ease of Doom mapping, or even the ease (or cleanliness) of Quake mapping, which is why the modding and mapping scenes for the Build classics were never as big and strong, unfortunately.

I'm not telling you that you shouldn't even try, it's doable and would be cool (look at 500ml Of /vr/), but you're looking at having to do a lot of learning and adapting, you WILL go "Wait, what the fuck? WHY?" a lot of times.

Here's a "behind the scenes" of my upcoming Quake 2-map for the Remaster. I really like to make indoors and outdoors cohesive, so that the base becomes a little bit more believable, and can function without the player's presence. This also helps make it feel less like a series of MacGuffins and more like something a little bit more grounded in reality.
If it wasn't for the old engine that I respect so much, I'd go more Quake 2 Remaster-missionpak on this and actually connected everything around in the outdoors-area with the indoors, instead of segmenting them off like I am doing. However, enemy behaviour and line of sight is a big limitation, and I'd rather let the AI do its thing within proper boundaries than impose vastly different arenas than the AI was meant to work with.

Something to point as well though is that even when “x is just a better y” there’s a feel to the weapons that feel very distinct.

So while the SSG is almost strictly better in utility (aside from some range issues) it is a substantially slower gun with a much bigger spread.

The pump shotgun however is faster and has a consistent horizontal spread. In order to maximize its damage, your aim has to be more accurate to the center of the enemy. Whereas the SSG doesn’t realistically make that same demand until you fight mid to high tier enemies.

These two distinct qualities alone make the pump action a very distinct experience from the SSG, and give greater depth to the gameplay experience.

I never got the same sense of nuance from Quake’s weapons.

Ive made it so you have to whipe out everyone and get hall passes to unlock other sections. You get finite health but infinite ammo. Cops start coming for you and it becomes survival horror almost. To win the game you gotta kill yourself in the library. of course. Also adding in his 'hockey.wad' as a hockey stadium in the school.

Also the Eric Harris archives and columbine shlack comes out in 2027, realdoom and tier wads might be there. The guy was talented at doom mapping, just lost his shit in high school.

GZDOOM 4.8 also has full compatiblity with hexen wads now, which is what this is. So it works with all new clients and so on. So I might finish it.

Librequake has some decent lowpoly stuff in it. There's an older "free as in freedom" quake project out there too. If you kitbash them together you have nearly enough assets for deathmatch, minus sounds.

I've made so many attempts at it but always got burned out before finishing for some reason.
I used saves but I did pistol start at least. It was pretty great, with the snow and heaven sections being the highlights. I loved how the second to last level teleported you back to the very beginning of the wad only to give you a ton of ammo and an army to fight.
The final boss felt a bit too OP though. In the end I saved the BFG for him and spammed it which I guess was the intended solution because it melted him.
Overall a great time, would happily play it through again someday.

It may not be entirely fair, but 99% of Linux users are unironically on the autism spectrum. This is why so many of them will get in heated debates about how FOSS software is superior to professional software merely by the virtue of it being FOSS (even when the program in question is obviously shit), or how everyone should be just like them and use Linux instead of Windows or Macintosh, simply being completely blind to the numerous drawbacks, or refusing to acknowledge them as drawbacks.
There's gradients of being obsessive and socially maladapted, which manifests as some Linux people being contemptible nerd assholes who rub other people the wrong way without even thinking about it or putting any effort into it.
In recent years, you also have the tranny social contagion (all trannies are on the autism spectrum without exception), which makes things worse to some.

It isn't all fully fair, probably doesn't apply to you, but those people are still 100% real, they're out there, and they are often the biggest and loudest advertisers and proponents of Linux and FOSS software visible to the public, which can cultivate an extremely unflattering image.
