It was okay. For your first time at anything an "okay" is great though. Complaints as follows.

The 'pickup an item, and a monster pops up behind you' is overdone. Everyone can see it coming, it isn't scary nor surprising nor interesting anymore. The same goes for the specter in the dark hallway.

The level feels too clean and artificial. Like if Hell decided to invade but was extra careful not to break anything or get dirt on the nice shiny floor.

The ledge near the chair (nice chair BTW, comfiest thing I've ever seen in a WAD) can't be dropped off of.

So I've been on a retro FPS spree lately. Beat Duke Nukem 3D (vanilla+The Birth), than Quake I.

Tried Blood, but the screwball mouselook makes it a pain in the ass, and I can't get Bmouse to work.

Tried Doom I but, it just isn't as fun for me as Quake and Duke. Too much running back and forth to get the keys, to unlock a door to get another key.

Tried Quake II, it looks great, but holy shit, every enemy is a fucking bullet-sponge. Everything takes too damn long to kill.

So what should I play next?

>> No.1781706

What doesn't work about bmouse? It's also worth pointing out that you can edit the dosbox startup config for Blood and have it do 'bmouse launch blood.exe' and then pause. There's a GOG thread about helping out with that.

I played Duke with eduke32 which has 'modern' mouselook built-in.

Vanilla build engine running out of Dos-box has something along the lines of the following written into its mouselook (or so says the Bmouse guy at least).

if (abs(control.axes[0])>abs(control.axes[1]))
control.axes[1]/=3;
else
control.axes[0]/=3;

If I move the mouse to the north-west, I want my aim to move north AND west, not north OR west.

I've been playing DoomRLA with it's monster mod. Revenants in that mod have 3 different missile attacks. One faster missile that doesn't track you, a slower one that tracks, and rarely they'll fire fast, non-tracking missiles from both shoulders. That one tends to kill me most of the time when it catches me off guard.

There are also Heavy Revenants, which only have one large launcher that fires a single tracking missile that does tons of damage, and Nightmare Revenants, that fire pairs of non-tracking skull projectiles.

Some Doom 4 details I found in pic related.

Sounds much better than I had hoped for, however there's one thing that nags at me. They never once mentioned 'level design' in their list which is of course absolutely imperative to a good Doom game. I really hope this game isn't linear but I doubt it.

Having loads of enemies on screen also sounds good to me a la Doom II and Final, but I hope they're not taking the Serious Sam approach.

Developers these days seem to not know what 'retro' actually means, judging by that recent Shadow Warrior reboot. They think it just means throwing a fuck load of spawning enemies at you and facing wave after wave of them when that's really not what it was about at all. It was about may things but one which was absolutely key was good, non-linear level design. Level design is truly an art in itself by making sure it's balanced with health/ammo pick-ups etc and by thoughtfully placing enemies to come up with interesting gameplay situations. I just hope it's not some linear shitfest and you enter a room to be taking on wave after wave of spawning enemies like the Shadow Warrior reboot was. We'll just have to see.

Eeeeh. Whatever floats your boat I guess but imo you should be trying minor enhancement mods if it's your first time.
As for your question, remember to strafe like a mofo when fighting, and pay attention so you find some secrets. If you still find it too hard drop a difficulty.

Welcome to the community. Hope you enjoy it, and stay a spell. Feel free to pop in the IRC in the OP if you have any further questions.
We've had 20 years of community content, after Brutal Doom hopefully you'll be interested in checking out some other quality mods the community's put out.

And if things get too difficult, don't worry about lowering the difficulty. The default was made for the average player, and if it's your first time then you are definitely not the average player.

I've been playing all the Doom games with wads I downloaded for free, which you can find through OP's FAQ link.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is, in my honest opinion, one of the most fun FPS games ever made with the soul exception of one of the mandatory stealth missions. The one that takes place in a big green field. What a pain in the ass that level was, a total buzzkill. My steam version was bugged so that if the mission-ending alarm rings it doesn't reset even if you restart the level; it is constantly in ALERT mode until you literally restart the entire fucking game.

It's still worth playing though, probably the best post Half-Life 1 game before that design philosophy was ignored for HL2 or CoD design.

The pre-Return Wolfenstein games are only novelties at this point in time unless you have nostalgia for them. Doom is better in every possible way.

Before Half-Life, every FPS that attempted to have "areas you're not supposed to shoot in" failed. Sure, these days it's easy to look back at HL 1 and think "they didn't let us shoot people for 30 minutes, what a bunch of shit," but back then it was incredibly innovative.

If the gunplay wasn't top-tier for the following 99% of the game, I'd agree with you that it's shit, but the fact is that the the first 30 minutes is setting the stage for a game that's meant to be more than just a shooting gallery despite having action FPS mechanics.

I mean, you might as well be saying you refuse to enjoy Breaking Bad because there's entire episodes with just "dialogue and drama with no action." Sometimes making the player listen and experience the world instead of just running around and shooting everything is the difference between something like Blade Runner and something like Transformers 2.

FYI, the difficulty ramps up dramatically in the following levels. Yeah, those zombies are incredibly easy and don't put up much of a fight, but you need to experience the marines which have arguably better AI than any FPS that followed HL1. The alien enemies can be really tough too.

The zombies you face in the level you've been sucking at are basically just "tutorial" creatures there to make sure the player knows how to use mouse look aiming competently, because believe it or not Half-Life 1 was one of the early free aiming games that didn't have any auto-aiming. Even Doom and Quake had auto-aiming. Quake 2 didn't have auto-aiming, but Half-Life was in development before Quake 2 came out and not everyone was a Quake 2 deathmatch pro.

Action, right away. I start a game of Strife. Two armored guys with assault rifles dead ahead, and they're going to kill me and I'm thanking them for it. I start a game of Deus Ex. Legendary intro scene, short dialogue with Paul and I'm in the game. For all its other shortcomings, at least Half-Life 2's intro doesn't outstay its welcome and actually has things to do, even before you get a gun.

The fact that Half-Life 1 had a shitload of AMAZING (at the time) scripted events for half an hour before you got to the shooting was amazing at the time, especially since it was so fun to be immersed in the world at a time when no action game bothered to take time to force immersion.

Yeah, it's pretty lame now that every FPS game since it has ripped it off, but it was fun as fuck at the time. It still is today IMO, as long as you're not the type of person who stopped reading books after high school.

Each time I make a fresh install of a Build game (unless it's powerslave which has no mouselook) ; I go into setup.exe, and while configuring to WASD+Mouse ; I although INDIVIDUALLY change the sensitivity of the Y-axis of the mouse; which takes you only a few seconds ; and then mouselook is perfectly fine.
As for the diagonal 'issue', maybe I'm just used to it now, but I would have never known if people didn't talk about it all the time, I really don't think it's a problem.

For comparaison point, I am also NOT an FPS mouse aiming pleb, I can get very picky and precise about my mouse aiming, and I beat all of Quake3 in Nightmare difficutly when I was 13.

Strife is pretty unique in that it has non linear RPG elements. It tells an interesting story but the gameplay is occasionally a bit wonky. Hexen is like an adventure/puzzle game, more technologically advanced than heretic but it's a lot more repetitive since it consists of switch hunts in huge maps/hubs.

Strife is a very unique fps-rpg, and the most advanced doom engine game. There's dialogue and an actual storyline. It's quite cool.

I must be the only one who likes Blue Shift more than OP Force. I even like Blue Shift more than HL itself. Blue Shift is the perfect summary of what Half Life is about with excellent level design, while I think Op Force is completely off. It adds tons of stuff and is longer than Blue Shift, but I don't find it consistent at all, tons of thing about it (including the level design, which i consider the most important) is pretty average.

Going through Masters of Doom.

So I'm really disagreeing with them on a lot of these firings. So Scott Hall's ideas are not jelling well with Doom. So why should this mean he gets fired? They should say "these are nice ideas. Just not for this game" and then give him some projects to work on. Maybe he could work on something in the vein of Commander Keen while the rest of the guys work on Doom? They're swimming in money so I doubt having another guy working on side projects would hurt the company too much.

Then Romero's firing. Okay so he messed up a bunch of ways. He's hype up Quake to anyone who'd ask, when it was all based on nothing. He slacked off working on Quake with the "rockstar" lifestyle, deathmatching and so forth. And he was too stubborn to realize that his original vision was too much for Quake, and that it would work best as a Doom 3D game. Is that really enough to fire him though? Romero was such an asset. All they needed was for him to work more, and to work more with Carmack. But Carmack seems to have really started to hate Romero and wouldn't budge. I'm thinking the answer is more about their relationship than the specifics. Probably just known each other too long and personalities can clash.

it does explain why I don't like Doom II maps as much as Doom 1 maps. Romero didn't make that many in II.

Also I have noted a few errors. The book says that The Crusher has a Cyber Demon being crushed. Unless I misheard it and he said "Spider Demon". Also he says that Imps are "bigfoot like" with brown fur. I never thought of that. Is that true? I've always seen them as hairless and having brown skin.

It seems like they throw away these talented guys too quickly if they don't fit into the particular project they're working on at the time.

Can you imagine if Romero was around for Doom 3? He could have saved it. Romero was right when he decided to move Doom away from a cinematic Half-life style game to an action game with little story. Doom 3 was just so sluggish and boring. It felt like it took forever for anything to happen. So much blah blah blah from idiots. I just want to shoot demons.

And Tom Hall's ideas aren't bad. They were after all basically Half-Life before there was Half-Life. If they had listened to him and gave him his own game to make, they could have made a half-life game years before the actual half-life.

These firings really hurt ID in the long term.

No, it's a Deagle.
But strictly speaking, the actual guns used on the movie sets was an M1A1 Thompson dressed up in plastic parts and junk, and the grenade-launcher was a sawed off Remington 870 shotgun in a backwards SPAS-12 heatshield, with a cut-up SPAS-12 pump-slide working as the 870's pump.

It's probably one of the coolest movie guns ever put together.

It has working multiplayer and you're likely to find random players on it ; the only other way of playing duke3D online won't have players, only works if you do it with people you know.

However, the multiplayer in megaton is laggy (even the devs admitted it).

Megaton also has easy on the fly launch of the add-ons which is nice.

Then, SOME people actually like the 32-bit renderer (which is the only forced rendered of the megaton version) more than the original game's 8bit. I personaly don't, but if you don't mind it, or even like it; you should be fine with Megaton , as long as you're playing the original game and the add ons casually. As far as mods and usermaps are concerned, you're better off with eduke32.

No, he fucking said that people claiming that BD is the way Doom was meant (intended) to be played is a fucking idiotic statement because BD has some very clear issues and doesn't even work with all of Doom's original maps.

Its one thing to like the mod, its another to act like you can flawlessly replace the original gameplay and not lose something in the process. If one wants to play that way, that's fine, but as soon as one makes the claim that its meant to be played that way, one opens one's self up to criticism.

Regardless, the only thing that really grinds me with BD (or any mod, really) is people suggesting to other people to play the game with that front the get go because "its like vanilla but better". Yeah, and MISERY is a great starter for STALKER too, right? That's sarcasm if you're having trouble getting it over text.

People probably don't realize it when they play, but mastering the way the two shotguns spread is a big part of Doom's normal play, especially on map's that exploit that with small firing slits for enemies and other such things. You won't fit a SS blast through one, but a standard shotgun can, for instance.

If Doom was realistic, yes, this would happen.

But Doom isn't realistic, Doomguy isn't killing other humans who are fighting for their homes and familys, and he isn't (this is important) a realistic person.
He is a larger-than-life figure, the FPS equivalent of Dante. He doesn't have much personality, but from what we know is that he LOVES what he does.

I guess you can either go all PTSD or you can go straight up murdering psychopath to deal with the trauma of it all.

I mean just imagine having a cacodemon or spooky skeleton come at you in real life even if you were a well-trained soldier. Shit would be terrifying yo.

Its pretty obvious at this point that Doom 3 being slower and less populated with monsters was what led it to ruin. It wasn't a complex enough game to bring a new audience, and it wasn't fast enough, populated enough, or have enough complex maps to keep much of the Doom audience.

I think Doom 4 is probably headed in the right direction. Trying to be realistic or slow is trying to compete with other games of the same type, and that is not going to happen. The best bet is a Serious Sam style of quick, visceral gameplay.

Let's just hope the maps are good.

Think of it this way.
You never got a chance to play doom before in your life, but everyone's talking about how awesome it is and how revolutionary it was and how important to the industry and etc etc
the source code is released, and people have made a version of it that works on modern systems! Glory be!

Except in this case, the only available source port is five-year-old version of Odamex, without any nods or even considerations towards accommodations to make things easier for modern players.
No console.
No interpolated mouse support.
No ability to join a netgame mid-match.
Every netgame kicks you back to the titlescreen.
You can't even start up a netgame by yourself, you have to make fucking appointments with people to fill up a lobby.

It would be really nice to have a better source port! It would be really nice to have a Zandronum/GZDoom equivalent around!
But, unfortunately, all we have is a gimped version of Odamex.

Being a Marathon fan is suffering.

Oh yeah and the original creators went on ahead to make Halo so there's that too.

3: You might as well be asking "if Doom is that good, why didn't it have a tournament at Quakecon this year" with how completely irrelevant that is.

What you're seeing is video editing. I figure people aren't too interested in seeing someone die, restart, die, restart, die, restart again and again, so I spliced a lot of footage together into one seamless playthrough.

See, when I died, what I'd do is play back to a quiet area I was at, freeze the game, then set the scenario back up.
I'd nudge the archviles here, put the cyberdemons there, summon an item I'd picked up before I died, head to where I was, and then restart recording.
Then during compiling the video, I'd cut out the part to where I died and put the next recorded part in it.

That way players see a full seamless playthrough and don't have to worry about bullshit about "oh my god he died AGAIN? If only he had just dodged that fucking thing".

Fuck no. Because they're fucking professionals. We don't know if there's a draft in UAC times but I'm pretty sure UAC isn't even government, meaning you need to volunteer for this shit.

Some of the marines in Aliens do start to freak out, yes, but that's half the point of that movie, a bunch of hot-shit soldiers end up dealing with a threat they are woefully underprepared for. Doomguy, by comparison, is--if anything--OVER prepared, and halfway through E1 is able to basically walk over enemies.

If the marines in Aliens had as little problem killing aliens as Doomguy did, then Hicks wouldn't have bitched out. And shit, Ripley didn't really have any big fucking problems during her time. She was even able to yell, "GET AWAY FROM HER YOU BITCH!" and shit.

While in the meantime a big portion of the spriters in the community do stuff on top of his work instead of doing stuff from scratch. If there's anyone in the community that would get away with accepting commissions for sprites, that would be Eriance (however he refuses to do so, comprehensively enough, because he's currently busy with IRL stuff and, as he told someoen on #zdoom once, commissions wouldn't exactly boost him up to do spritework)
