Hideous Destructor, a mod that more or less turns everything in Doom on its head. Slow base movement speed, smarter, crueler enemies, realistically-powerful weapons with a high level of mechanical detail, and a vast array of tools and magical artifacts to compensate for the tilted odds. On some maps it's nearly unplayable because of how much deadlier some enemies are in certain situations. SIGIL was perfect for it, though. I got through the whole wad without using mid-level saves at all, and even forgot my backpack full of gear on the first level, and still made it through fine.

You can also make it look pixely and crunchy in OpenGL, indeed.
A bonus is that you would still have support for brightmaps, which look extra delicious at lower resolutions.

If you like how OPL comes off with Doom, personally I think it's tinny and weak sounding, with zero oomph and power to it. Too quiet, too reserved, not enough emotion or tone, the notes and instruments have no power.

Much better audio was available at that time, particularly the SC55 soundfont the music was composed around.

Doom sounds a bit better on a real OPL chip, but really the compositions just aren't especially good when played through OPL.

Fluidsynth is "okay" but OPL is gold.
OPL is somber and creates a mood and makes you feel like you're fucked.

FM Synth chips like the OPL2/3 don't really shine unless the track was actually composed for it, I find. You don't have too many examples of that on MS-DOS games, Princess Maker 2 being a really good one.

I'm half way through Sigil. I've had really fun so far. I first tried it on HMP, since I thought that it would as hard as modern wads. Felt bit boring, but UV really spiced things up. The maps play fun, and their looks are unique even thought new textures (outside the sky texture) aren't used.

I could see, that ones who want straight action and straight slaughtery sections would hate the wad. Sigil is very old school in sense, and has puzzly moments in almost every map.

I do think, that this wad deserves a cacoward. Many way worse wads have gotten cacoward, that I wouldn't want to play a single time. Howerer I could see myself returning to this.

I think, that wad gets so much hate, because you've spoiled your self by overhyping it. You thought it would be some kind of jesus game, while it's just a nice little fan service wad from Romero. And it's just perfect as a nice little fan service wad.

Ok so this bothered me, so I opened e5m9 in slade. Turns out that in order to get the yellow key you need to:
- walk around the wall on the cyberdemon castle
- hit the switch at the end
- walk over the line (screenshot) on the platform the switch is on (!). only this will raise the platform to the yellow key door!
- walk to the yellow door AND TRY TO OPEN IT WITHOUT A KEY (this is so stupid!). this will lower the small walls of the tech pillars (next to the platform that leads to the yellow door) and reveal 2 switches
- press both switches. this will raise the rocks and lower the wall to the yellow key cage
- only then you can pick up the key and enter the yellow door

if this was a secret, it would be fine, but this is mandatory progression. I can understand john made this map the secret map...

>> No.5608289

It was better than I was expecting. Pretty good music and atmosphere, somewhat average gameplay. Romero played to his strengths well, it's just a shame he's so reliant upon narrow corridors and the slow gameplay associated with no SSG.

So like other people were saying, not anywhere near as good as a top tier megawad like ancient aliens/BTSX etc. Still iconic, but not everyone's cup of tea and tastes have changed since this style of mapping was popular.

But if you are using atmosphere or reinx you can try out "Freebird" which allows you to set a custom GPU/CPU overclock per title. I don't have much experience with it as, again, not supported.

But that actually will probably give you a decent enough boost. Ask the fags on /vg/ more about overclocking.

It has sprites in the github master versions and is fully available in-game. You can put it in your loadout (the codes are 'rev' for the gun and '355' for the ammo) or find it normally dropping from the same enemies that drop pistols and replacing shotgun spawns occasionally. It's not much of a gamechanger, the regular pistol is better in most situations, but if you like the idea of a revolver executed with HD's attention to detail, that's what it's there for.

Ignoring Hideous Destructor because he didn't want to be doing that, didn't like it but his fans badgered him into it, and a lot of these threads get mad over that.

He almost always misses something, usually something fairly key to the mod, when it comes to his streams he gets barraged with people telling him what he's missed for hours on end and he somehow misses that as well.

Also he has really weird ideas, like how he thought Dakka needs to be like Russian Overkill.

I've watched his vid right before starting up the game, and finished SiGil only 10 minutes ago. It was actually really good, better than DOOM 2, and about equal to a very good DOOM 1 chapter.
I don't agree with anything he's saying in the video, I didn't feel cramped, the bridge part didn't feel unfair, and I don't feel like it overly relied on certain enemies at all, it just knows which enemies actually stand a change at doing damage instead of throwing an army of easy kills at you.

Is GZDoom good for Lan play with two people? Getting someone to coop it with me and it's her first exposure to the games and really fps in general so I want to minimize the bullshit.

Well according to Lugosi, women should love it
>The pure horror, it both repels, and attracts them, because in their collective unconsiousness, they have the agony of childbirth. The blood. The blood is horror. Take my word for it. If you want to make out with a young lady, take her to see "Dracula".

It was done in Doom maps and player-made maps before quake was a thing.

So everybody thinks that Sigil is bad right?
Everybody knows by now that Sigil is the worst?
100% of people agree that Sigil is horrible?
Homeless people in the street are screaming about how Sigil is terrible?
Sigil is the worst thing to happen to Doom since Doom 3?
Sigil is so awful that it single handedly killed video games?
Everybody has reached the same group consensus on this, right?
Everyone here has the same opinion on Sigil?
And we all agree that its so bad that Doom is ruined forever, right?

Good, I'm glad we all share this subjective opinion

Eviternity has a splitscreen fork, so you can cut even more bullshit than messing with IP fuckery. But I heard someone say that particle stuff can fuck up the connection and desync.

My computer overheats when it plays GZdoom for more than a few minutes.

>> No.5609660

so what is the best vanilla sourceport to use?

>> No.5609742

Chocolate and crispy for optimum accuracy. Prboom+ and Eternity for high accuracy and wide-screen. Eternity has built in controller support which is good for TV play. Basically, if you see demos playing automatically on the title screen you have a high accuracy port.

>> No.5609937

I find my laptop stays fairly cool for quite a while with a cooling plate.

Like, my computer is reasonably modern, but the fan in the plate doesn't even work anymore, basically meaning for all it matters, it's a thick perforated sheet of aluminum, just allowing free airflow and sinking lots of heat.
The thing is this counts for a lot, not having the bottom of the laptop flat against a table surface or mushed up against your lap or stomach, where there's little if any airflow and where the only heatsink will be your table or your own body.

I can play games for hours and hours and it really takes a long time for it to get appreciably hot.

Why is SiGil map 5 such a hot mess?
Where am I even supposed to go?

>> No.5611127

Neither, use Rocket Launcher. https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7211

Imo zdl is too limited and doom launcher is overbloated so this is a good middleground for me.

What I find funny is I read like 5 messages like this a day. If everyone who complained this just made a server and joined it, there would be no issue.
