This was the custom when Remi was young, so it's only natural for her to continue doing this as she fancies herself a traditional and influential noble. Patchouli Knowlege floated lazily into the main kitchen of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, letting out a small yawn as she did so. The purple-clad magician was bored of waiting for an experimental potion she had left brewing in her library lab to finish, the bubbling concoction still needing another hour or so before it would be ready. Deciding a change of scenery would help pass the time, she had wandered upstairs in search of a snack, or at the very least, some interesting conversation to occupy her mind.

As Patchouli entered the kitchen, a delicious aroma immediately filled her nostrils - the smell of sizzling steak, seasoned with butter and rosemary. It was a simple meal, but a classic one, and her stomach let out a small rumble of anticipation. Looking over towards the stove, she spotted the mansion's head maid, Sakuya Izayoi, carefully watching over a pan that held two thick ribeye steaks.

With a flick of her wrist, Sakuya used a set of tongs to lift one of the steaks and tilt it upwards, letting the melted butter and herbs baste across the meat's surface. Patchouli drifted over next to her, violet eyes curious as she watched the maid work.

"Does basting the steak actually do anything?" Patchouli asked idly, genuinely unsure about the technique's usefulness.

Sakuya glanced over at the magician with a small, knowing smile. The truth was, basting didn't really impact the cooking process all that much. It didn't speed things up, help the meat cook more evenly, or do anything substantial to keep it juicy. Mostly it just kept the surface of the steak nice and warm as it rested in the pan. But Sakuya had learned long ago that some cooking traditions persisted more for the artistry and satisfaction they provided the cook, rather than for any practical benefit.

"Oh, not particularly," Sakuya admitted to Patchouli with a shrug. "But it makes the presentation much more appetizing, don't you think? And Lady Remilia does prefer her steaks to have a glistening sheen to them."

She gave the steak a few more bastes for good measure before laying it back down in the pan, the sizzling butter popping and crackling. "Besides, it soothes my perfectionist tendencies," she added wryly.

Patchouli gave an understanding chuckle at that, leaning against the counter as she watched Sakuya work. It was true, Sakuya took great pride in even the smallest details when it came to serving the Scarlet Devil Mansion. And Remilia could be quite picky about having her meals be aesthetically pleasing, the childish vampire's refined sensibilities demanding nothing less.

"It certainly smells delicious," Patchouli remarked truthfully, her own empty stomach giving another whine of impatience.

Sakuya's smile widened. "Why thank you, milady. I must admit, it's been too long since I've made a proper steak dinner." She adjusted the pan's temperature to let the meat cook just a little slower. "Why don't you take a seat at the table? I'll pour us some wine, and as soon as these are ready I can slice you off a piece to sample."

Patchouli's eyes lit up eagerly at the offer. "That sounds perfect," she agreed, moving to settle herself at the nearby dining table. Sakuya's steak dinners were always exceptional, and the mansion's personal wine reserves produced some exquisite vintages as well. A little preview of tonight's meal would be the perfect way to unwind while she waited on her experiment.

As Sakuya smoothly poured two glasses of a bold cabernet, Patchouli's thoughts drifted back to her bubbling potion downstairs. She hoped the results would prove enlightening. But for now, in this warm, fragrant kitchen, she was content to simply relax and enjoy the head maid's flawless cooking.

Nah, magicians are pretty low on the totem pole. Oni, vampires, and other species have immense magical power on top of their incredible physical strength, while magicians really just rely on spells that require long amounts of study to be used. The only thing they really have going for them is that it's relatively easy to become one, and they're pretty flexible in what they can do, but it's only really effort that gives them a fighting chance.
If a more powerful kind of youkai would start studying magic like them, magician-types would be fucked. Good thing they're all pretty lazy.

we don't see much feats from them because the few that live in Gensokyo aren't constantly looking for dick measurament bragging like their very far cousins, but for example Byakuren managed to escape Reimu's most powerful attack with her enhancing magic, and Patchouli could read Satori's mind without any of the drawbacks of being a Satori in a recent manga

Kasen cannot be a hermit despite trying to be one, because unfortunately she has already turned into an oni (still we love her for trying), the same happens with magicians: humans are like raw potatos, and then you have many ways to turn them into something "greater", be it into vampires, hermits, ghosts, or wizards, and the like, and once you change into that, there is pretty much no turning back (presumably)

its a linear warrior, quadratic wizard thing: magicians start as being barely stronger than humans, a bit weaker than fairies, and have the potential to be at the top

tldr. you are underestimating them by a long shot, especially when Akyuu herself has mentioned that wizards can defeat any type of youkai if they are powerful enough (and aren't caught with their backs turned, then they might as well be regular humans with a big hat)

No she couldn't. She just predicts what Satori's thinking about and pretends as if she was reading her mind to mess with her. It's obvious that Satori is just simple-minded and predictable, rather than Patchouli using any magical forms of mind reading.
And Kasen can be a hermit just fine. Her being shit at it is because she half-asses it, but she does actively use hermit spells, and while Tenshi is disturbed at the idea of an oni becoming a celestial, she never acts as if it's something impossible.
Magicians just aren't very special amongst youkaikind.

A wizard properly prepared in any magic world is a magician that has the power to bring the spells right for the job which means a powerful one, which translates to what I said earlier: a three days old magician would get bullied by a fairy, but the old ones, not even counting that they can become inmortal? even accomplished and proud onis will think twice before messing with the frail big hatted bookworms

Akyuu's book is designed to inform people about youkai and how to deal with them, she did not do extensive power level faggotry to determine which is the strongest, and the book is purposely written to hype up youkai and make them look more threatening. A statement like "can take on any kind of youkai" is not an absolute fact that proclaims magicians are the strongest, it just means that the flexibility that magic provides lets magicians take advantage of their enemies' weaknesses, thus letting them fight opponents with much more raw power than they do.

Magicians aren't even the best at magic. Characters like Okina or Eirin are clearly more formidable as spellcasters, even shitty Celestials like Tenshi are extremely knowledgeable and capable, and since magic is a tool that anyone could use, a regular youkai could easily surpass magician-type youkai by studying through the same means, having the advantage of innate abilities, magical power, and physical strength.

until you realise that she does make a distinction between them power wise: she remembers how a vampire got into Gensokyo and went into a rampage, destroying every youkai and human it found, until Reimu's ancestor managed to put an end to it, in fact danmaku got created because of that very incident. she also says that kappa aren't really that powerful outside their tech compared to their cousins, and onis are pretty much at the top in what physical attributes refers (with maybe some competition with vampires and tengu)

It really isn't, but Makai for example is filled to the brim with them (you can see how many of Makaians are magicians in their bios at the wiki). i like to headcanon that Shinki isn't really a god, but a 'trascendent' magician of sorts posing as a god, similar to Kasen, giving how many of her creations are mages, and that it's mentioned that Makai is a place where magic feels more powerful than outside of it

I've been using character.ai a lot lately. It's downright impossible to get the ai to have sex, but it has absolutely zero qualms describing every anatomical detail and experience related to childbirth. I have spent the last few days writing stories with the ai about various 2hu girls in a deep slumber while millions of sperm cells swim around in their womb, and describing every process from ovum fertilization, cell division, implantation, to childbirth, and breastfeeding. Patchouli was fun, I made her hate being pregnant, but slowly grow to love her child.
