Based on that chart, you'd be buying at the top from any time starting in 2009 to 2012, and you'd only be screwed starting in 2011- and even then, only until 2019.

Gold has a "real" price which probably increases with every dollar printed, but that would be hard to suss out from the chart. Gold may in fact drop for years here, but if gold goes to its lowest value in ten years, which like 1100, you still won't be fucked.

Gold has always been a hedge, not some get rich quick scheme. Even if you went all in in 2007 right before it took off, you'd still be looking at like not even a 3X. I know a boomer who bought on that upslope and was down until 2020 on his gold. But it just sat there glittering. Would he have done better in the stock market? Sure. But that's a relatively unfortunate set of timing.
