Do note that Miko already connects more with Gensokyo and learns quicker than Byakuren does, and both Kanako and Miko clearly have a huge intellectual advantage over Byakuren. I might as well have just left that out, since I did intend for the context to be "when talking about Gensokyo and its youkai and humans and stuff like that", not particularly for things we can't know like math proficiency or spatial intelligence or whatever. In these matters Byakuren is left in the dust and even has a number of misconceptions that are called out. Kanako has a buffer of this being her area of expertise and having been around longer, but Miko literally just popped out and is already ahead of Byakuren, even if she's somewhat fixated on Gensokyo requiring leaders and has basically no backing yet.

No, that never happened.

Looking at the character descriptions, as canon as you can get, Byakuren was on a boat with 'several people' when she met Murasa, all of them were flung into the ocean, and there was no mention of ever saving them. The story is told primarily from Murasa's perspective, so maybe she just didn't mention rescuing all the humans because she didn't think it was noteworthy, but I doubt that's the case. It explicitly states that Byakuren didn't fight back harder than any normal human, so she must have plotted/been plotting SOMETHING. Also, I don't think people would have managed to keep quiet about how she was actually befriending youkai instead of exterminating them. I'm pretty sure all those humans drowned, and that Byakuren didn't really feel bad about it. If that's the case, I don't believe that that's the ONLY instance in which she let humans die for the sake of youkai.

Byakuren's a horrible monster. She's nice and all believing in equality now, sure, but that doesn't begin to atone for all the people she led to their deaths.

Except for Byakuren speaking in plural while on the Pallaquin Ship. Why would she do it if they weren't around?

>It explicitly states that Byakuren didn't fight back harder than any normal human, so she must have plotted/been plotting SOMETHING.

And we know exactly what. Because she then proceeded to do it and it worked. Binding Minamitsu's soul to the new magical ship to allow her to leave the ocean. Occam's razor!

>Also, I don't think people would have managed to keep quiet about how she was actually befriending youkai instead of exterminating them.

Why would they have any reason to complain? She can be as sympathetic towards youkai as she wants as long as what she does work, it's par for the course for monk figures anyway.

Let's make a test. Which of the following scenes is more likely to happen:

Byakuren: "I freed the poor lost soul from its eartly bounds, you can now sail safely."
Folk people: "Oh, thank you, great monk, you're our savior!"

Or maybe:

Byakuren: "I freed the poor lost soul from its eartly bounds, you can now sail safely."
Folk people: "Why didn't you fucking kill it with fire you freaking youkai sympathizer!"

Yes. The argument people have made against me before is that "Well she didn't PLAN for those people to die! You can't prove that she PLANNED anything!" They were trying clear her name by saying that she didn't plan the deaths of those men. It was only AFTER I countered those arguments that I heard people start spouting "B-b-but it never explicitly says that they died! Therefore they must not have died at all!" I figured I'd reiterate that yes, she DID plan this encounter out, in case people start trying to bring up that stupid argument again.

>Why would they have any reason to complain? She can be as sympathetic towards youkai as she wants

Uh, no. No she can't. According to PMiSS, the friendliness between humans and youkai is something that Akyuu has never witnessed in her previous incarnations. And straight from Byakuren's character profile in the manual for UFO:
>She pretended to be a great youkai exterminator, but actually saved the youkai behind the scenes.

She can't pretend to be a 'great youkai exterminator' when people know that she's not exterminating them. You think that a boatload of people would keep quiet about such a well-renowned person completely lying about what she claimed to do? You think no one would question WHY she was saving youkai? If people would accept what she planned to do, why didn't they just let her go off in a boat shaped like Murasa's from the very beginning? Why didn't she construct the shining ship until AFTER everyone on the boat had been flung into the sea?

Face it, Byakuren let those people die and didn't lift a finger to try to save them.

>It was only AFTER I countered those arguments

You didn't counter those arguments at all. You actually agreed you had to review your own opinion because you assumed that Byakuren was planning maliciously.

>> No.10150191

>You actually agreed you had to review your own opinion

Because I was basing my view on what was stated in the wiki, without looking up the direct quotes. People said that I shouldn't hold such a view without looking into the actual canon to confirm it, and I agreed. That was a completely fair criticism to make. Now I've looked at the character profiles, where the events are mentioned, and my view has pretty much remained the same.

>you assumed that Byakuren was planning maliciously.

No, I never assumed that. I was claiming that she was evil and horrible because she purposefully set people up to die. I never said that she did so maliciously; she just did so callously. It COULD be that she deeply regrets how she sent people to their deaths, but considering how heavily she's into STOP OPPRESSING THE YOUKAI (instead of STOP THE VIOLENCE, though she does preach equality and all that) and how she doesn't appear to have any humans in her temple, I don't think she particularly cares about the people whose lives ended early because of her.

>> No.10150219

If those people are being mentioned, adding that they've been saved in the meantime is unnecessary, it'd have been directly >implied by context and the chain of cause and effect.

>The argument people have made against me before is that "Well she didn't PLAN for those people to die! You can't prove that she PLANNED anything!"

And that's exactly what I'm saying too, you know - don't look for some hidden plots when what's happening is explicitly stated and makes sense that way. You seem to have fixated on the word "plan" and ignored the gist of the argument. I guess everyone can agree that, in the broadest literal sense, she must have been "planning something", but the only victory you're going to score by insisting on that phrasing is in the field of semantics.

Also quite obviously you can't prove that she planned to kill anyone when you can't prove that it happened in the first place.

>She pretended to be a great youkai exterminator

This does not mean she pretended to be a great youkai hater, and it would in fact be really uncharacteristic for a holy spiritual figure of her kind. You're missing the gist of the argument again. The gist being: you're vastly overestimating the lengths to which she'd have to go to keep a believable disguise.

>She can't pretend to be a 'great youkai exterminator' when people know that she's not exterminating them

How are people going to know she did not (literally) exterminate Minamitsu when the latter is gone and the boats stopped sinking indiscriminately? Why would they even care all that much? Face it - Byakuren is, ultimately, doing her job, saving people from dangers posed by youkai, and has become quite effective at it. That's all she needs to earn the title.

>If people would accept what she planned to do, why didn't they just let her go off in a boat shaped like Murasa's from the very beginning? Why didn't she construct the shining ship until AFTER everyone on the boat had been flung into the sea?

I just popped in here, but her profile clearly states the latter is how the humans reacted when they found out she was supporting youkai instead of exterminating them. And then they sealed her away for a thousand years for being a "demon in human form". Not only that, but in no cases has Byakuren been shown to "free them from their earthly bounds", she really just outright helped them because she figured the youkai were being oppressed (never mind the humans that the youkai kill that make the other humans angry at the youkai). Murasa is no exception; while she stopped haunting the seas she in no way stopped being a youkai. Murasa's thoughts were seriously "if I can leave the ocean maybe I can go attack humans". This might have changed after Byakuren gave her the ship, but it doesn't exactly help your case.

Additionally, she never was talking in reference to other people on the Palanquin. It explicitly says everyone fell into the ocean when the sink capsized, and Byakuren says "the ship that brought us here was sunk in a shipwreck accident". That's the only time she ever referenced the other people with her, and the former quote gives more of an impression that they were just left in the sea. Of course it's still possible that the other humans survived, but the other anon has solid points in regards to that.

>> No.10150282

>>10150219
>plan plan plan
As the other guy says, the plan in advance was to take a bunch of people on a boat, go find Murasa, have her capsize the boat then give her the Palanquin. She clearly didn't make it up on the spot. This is honestly a pretty silly plan to begin with, but that's another matter. Personally I don't think she went in going "oh well I won't save the humans to cover my tracks", but if the people did in fact drown then your entire platform falls apart, since there is no excusing that. She doesn't need to have planned to kill anyone if they died for her plan to succeed anyways.

>hidden
No, pretty sure everything the both of you are saying is explicitly stated, which is why there's an argument to begin with.

>not a youkai hater
>How are people going to know she did not (literally) exterminate Minamitsu when the latter is gone
Of course she wasn't toted as a youkai hater, but she was still a youkai exterminator. Her job was to exterminate youkai. Murasa did not just suddenly stop existing once Byakuren helped her, in fact she was given more freedom than before. Not to mention, if the people on board survived they would have had to come back on the ship Murasa was given to captain.

>maybe it was the first time she met Murasa
Er, that's utter bologna speculation man. She knew how to replicate the very ship she died on and knew that Murasa would be pacified and freed if she gave it to her; that's pretty damn precise.

>> No.10150427

>>10150258
>they sealed her away for a thousand years for being a "demon in human form"

Because she is, quite literally, a demon in human form. A youkai, that is. That said, I fail to see how is that relevant here. It happened "a few decades" (mistranslated as a few hundred years, what the hell, wiki) after the discussed incident, for example, and there's nothing about the description that cannot be reduced to "humans were being xenophobic".

>in no cases has Byakuren been shown to "free them from their earthly bounds"

That's literally what she did to Minamitsu. Literally literally. Come on.

>Murasa's thoughts were seriously "if I can leave the ocean maybe I can go attack humans".

Now you're just making things up. Things irrelevant to the topic, at that.

>the former quote gives more of an impression that they were just left in the sea

>the plan in advance was to take a bunch of people on a boat, go find Murasa, have her capsize the boat then give her the Palanquin. She clearly didn't make it up on the spot.

>Er, that's utter bologna speculation man.

The difference is, I'm "speculating" merely to demonstrate that there exists a simple explanation that doesn't involve Byakuren creating an elaborate plan beforehand. My reasoning doesn't hinge on it. I'm not even sure that the contrary reasoning hinges on it either (making the point moot), but if it does, then the burden of proof is on you, and this necessitates demonstrating that each and every alternative "speculation" is wrong. Can you do that? I don't think so.

>if the people did in fact drown then your entire platform falls apart

If they did, then it does. But that doesn't prove that they did. And if you want to prove that they did from this, you're committing a fallacy of circular reasoning.

>Murasa did not just suddenly stop existing once Byakuren helped her

Depends on how you define "Murasa". The danger to sailors (which was the only thing they knew of or cared about) stopped existing, the mission was a full success in that regard.

>they would have had to come back on the ship Murasa was given to captain

How's that a problem? They don't even need to see Murasa, and the fact that the ship is magical in the first place kinda stops every doubts about how it works either way.

>that's pretty damn precise

If Byakuren can built the ship by magic on the spot, she can build it in any shape and form on the spot. It's magic, man.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to accept that Byakuren let people die. It's hardly unprecedented in Touhou for characters who aren't seen as 'bad' to have done bad things. In 'Dolls in Pseudo Paradise', Alice kills six men, drives a seventh one to suicide, and implies that she uses human eyes for her dolls.

I'm noticing that most of your arguments are coming from many "maybe"s that end up fulfilling the conclusion. It isn't a very solid way to argue at all.

>quite literally a demon in human form, humans being xenophobic
You said that it's more likely for the humans to go "hooray the youkai is pacified" rather than "you're supposed to kill it" when the humans actually have unreasonably exploded on youkai, as well as Byakuren. While I'm not arguing that the humans demanded the youkai to be destroyed, it isn't proper to assume your case is the most likely nor that it was what happened.

>Literally what she did to Minamitsu
No, she just unbound Murasa from the ocean. Even if she never set foot on a ship again and the people could sail, this is not freeing them like sending a troubled spirit to the afterlife, so the status of "exorcised" is questionable.

>making things up
>それが成功すれば、私を縛る呪われた海から離れて人間を襲う事も出来
るかも知れない。
It's relevant because Murasa thought this way before Byakuren saved her, and therefore you can't claim that she was pacified just by being freed from the ocean, if she was even pacified.

>> No.10152944

>>10150482
>Depends on how you define "Murasa"
That outcome is possible, yes, but you cannot simply claim that the humans were satisfied by Murasa not actually being exterminated, nor that the people were alright with their ship being destroyed, nor that they were alright with giving Murasa a ship, having to take her ship back to shore, etc.

>How's that a problem? They don't even need to see Murasa
Speculation. Even if this was the case, this might or might not be a solution.

>magic
"It's magic" is still bologna speculation, and still doesn't account for Byakuren knowing that Murasa would be pacified with said ship. My bologna speculation would be that Byakuren asked around and did research on Murasa so she could understand her better.

Again, I have no solid opinion on the matter because I think it's a very questionable subject. I don't think it could be concluded that Byakuren hates/is ambivalent of humans either, and I am not claiming so. You're saying that the matter is NOT questionable and Byakuren did not let people die and so forth, and you aren't doing a very good job of arguing for your case.

Notably, taking the stance that Byakuren let the humans die does not require debunking of every alternative. There is no null stance here, just two different cases that both have support.

>> No.10152948

>>10150427
>So speaking for other people, not just yourself
Oh, I see what you mean now. The argument against was that "The ship that brought us here" doesn't mean the other people are still there; it's made clear that other people were on the ship; "everyone was flung into the ocean" yet there's no later description of the other people; so it's difficult to note their status. While quite flimsy, there's also the matter of forgiving Murasa with "oh look our boat sank in an accident etc" while the rest of the people are there lol.

To your credit, it's also possible that the other people on board knew of the plan in advance, considering the high likelihood that there was a plan. It's still speculation-based reasoning and equally flimsy, but there's that.

>>10151060
I do agree that it's likely enough that Byakuren has more people living at the temple than just the cast we know of. However, it's said often that it's hard to tell whether or not Byakuren actually dislikes humans, and most of her actions are catered towards youkai specifically. She also doesn't seem to be aware that the youkai at the temple have antagonized the humans there on occasion.

Miko is a flat tomboy. Byakuren's crew IS bigger and has more loved characters. If you ever played one of the tengu games, Byakuren is shown to have the ability to create many swords and throw them. And if you honestly think "I can hear 10 people at the same time lol!" is more powerful than Magic Superman fucking Hijiri then kill yourself right now. Byakuren transcends humanity. She's like an ascended human due to her abilities. If you read the fanbook about the three factions, you'd see that Byakuren was a very fair leader and teacher compared to Miko who treated her followers like servants. She is pure and holy (a saint). The religion part is more opinion based. She is cute and adorable though, beloved by god and men! The lamb of God! So, we've got a religious war brewing in Gensokyo, between the Taoists, the Buddhists, and the Moriya Shrine.

But there's a neutral fourth party in all of this-- the Hakurei Shrine. It is the job of the Hakurei to maintain balance, after all.
Reimu won't intervene until it affects her personally, but... the God of the Hakurei isn't going to lift a finger at all.

But I don't claim anything. You're claiming that >Murasa's thoughts were seriously "if I can leave the ocean maybe I can go attack humans".. I'm merely pointing out that this quote is completely made up, because it is. [2]

Now, I can claim that, based on Byakuren's characterization and what we know about the subsequent events, that it's a reasonable guess that she intended to pacify Minamitsu in one way or another, and had to a reasonable extent succeeded. Now, let's be serious here for a moment - if all you'll have to "counter" that claim is "but you can't prove that", yet you'll keep insisting on using this completely made up "fact" of yours in your reasoning, then there's no point of discussing this anymore, as you'd have proven beyond any reasonable doubt that you have no case whatsoever.

I can simply claim that humans were satisfied with Murasa being gone (and didn't need to know the details), and that they were perfectly alright with having a ship to return home on. You, however, cannot claim they have, at any time, had a perfect knowledge about what's happening, yet your entire reasoning is based on this exact conjecture. [1], [2].

>I don't think it could be concluded that Byakuren hates/is ambivalent of humans either, and I am not claiming so.

The certainty with which you state your claims sure makes it seem like you do claim so.

>You're saying that the matter is NOT questionable and Byakuren did not let people die and so forth

No, I don't. I have been stating over and over that my reasoning can be invalidated by sufficient evidence, and all that I'm pointing out is the lack of said evidence. You are, to put things bluntly, a liar.

>and you aren't doing a very good job of arguing for your case.

If "but... but you can't prove it!" is all the argumentation you have left, then I'd say I'm doing a very good job arguing my case.

>taking the stance that Byakuren let the humans die does not require debunking of every alternative

Actually, it kinda does. Presumption of innocence. The claim going contrary to Byakuren's entire characterization. No precedent in the rest of the story. You need a really strong case here, and you lack it.

Unless all you mean "that's how I want it to be in my personal Gensokyo". I'm fully supporting your right to your personal Gensokyo, let little black Tewi be your guide. I just don't have to share it.
