I could rant for hours. I'll give my top 3.
3) The female character you meet first but is destined to be disappointed. It's always some imouto or childhood friend character. They're the sweetest and the sexiest and usually have that fine short hair. But despite the fact that they take care of the useless main character more than anyone else and support him more and generally demonstrate more desirable characteristics, because the series is about the MC meeting some magical alien from planet Breastopia III, she doesn't stand a chance.
2 The energetic female friend. Two reasons to hate this one. One, it's easily over-done and goes from amusing or adorable to mind-numbingly irritating. Second, when they're done right, they're always among the ignored heroines. Either it's an adventure series, and they're the useless and weak comic relief... or it's a harem, and they're one of the ones that can't win because she's too outlandish for the pussy main character who "just wants a normal life."
Number 1 - The stupid goddamn pussy lead male who wants nothing more than a normal life. He panics when astoundingly sexy women beg to jump his bones. He wusses out of any challenge. He has no redeeming characteristics of any sort. But girls fall over him... and it freaks him out the way the Burger King freaks out any sane human being. Fuck you, Joe Everyjapaneseteen. Fuck you for making one third of every season of anime a horrendous waste of good character design.

So, /jp/ probably isn't going to take too kindly to this, but it would be nice to see what the response is anyway.

I'm thinking of going back to university to learn Japanese, properly, for the eventual purpose of professional translation or living in Japan or whatever, partly because I like Japanese, partly because I want off my current career direction, and partly because I am a weeaboo who wishes to read VNs in their original language.
