I usually use CRTRoyale Composite(specifically the Retroarch version, I've never gotten it to look good via reshade) for everything, and still do for everything up to the PS1, but recently I've taken a liking to GTUv50(I think thats what its called lmao) with the composite option toggled, for N64, Gamecube and PS2 specifically. The shitty color bleed looks EXACTLY like the TV I had growing up and the less intense grille pattern works a bit better for these later systems than Royale does. Bonus points it actually looks good via Reshade so you're not stuck with retroarchs borderline non-functional PCSX2 and Dolphin cores.

Never understood the desire PVM-like filters with pristine image quality, they don't even really look like an actual PVM, the slight rainbowing, color bleed, and dot crawl of composite is what I remember these games looking like and how I like my filters to be.

>> No.9905986

GTU doesn't even attempt to create a phosphor mask. It just generates scanlines, blur, and composite artifacts. It's good at what it does, though.

any way to convert retro arch filters for duckstation? iirc duckstation uses like demul format or some shit

>> No.9906093

>>9906054
They would need to be ported to use Duckstation's shader spec, which isn't exactly simple. I believe it's the same spec that Dolphin uses, and since neither Dolphinfags not Stenzek have ever really cared much for shaders (the preference here for improving the image has always been to just render at higher resolution, after all, so shaders were never seen as essential), no one has bothered to port more than a few of them. So your best option is something like ReShade.

CRT-Guest-Advance has all the bloom and glow options you could possibly want. That said, they are cope in a way, since they're there to try to make up for the lack of brightness and dynamic range in most monitors. HDR, coupled with a shader like Sony Megatron that takes full advantage of it, is the proper solution.

Yeah, but at the same time some textures on signs, fire, trees and other things look terrible without some obscuring.
This is 1080p with no filtering and the other one was 240p with filters, I'm trying to find a balance still.

Remember to try out downsampling if you're using a CRT shader with N64 or PS1 games. It's a pretty good visual quality boost.

I did try some upscaling feature to 4x the usual, that could be it, I'll get back to it in a bit. I admittedly don't know very much about this sort of thing. My laptop's reslution is 1920 x 1080 and I emulate in the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Have you ever posted a real crt photo claiming it was a shader only for it to get blasted by anti shader fags for not looking real at all?

>> No.9925481

>>9925458
Yeah, just regular upscaling will lose the scanline effect. To get it to look right, you have to either render at native res, or use downscaling, which will still make the graphics look better. If you want to try the latter, look for an option under the ParaLLEl settings that says downscale factor and set it to 1/4.

Thanks, I'll play around with that when I can.

You were right, got it working at native res. Looks great with Guest. What exactly does downscaling do? I'm also curious about getting the image to match my screen the way real hardware matches the size of a TV monitor, but I'm fine with the 4:3 display, it doesn't feel crunched or anything.

Sorry, the correct term is downsampling. Basically it renders the image at high resolution, then scales it back down to the original native resolution, resulting in a clearer, anti-aliased image.

Pic related is regular native res...

Parallel64 is semi recent and solved a ton of graphics issues and gives that audiophile tier emulation accuracy that was missing for a long time

Like properly emulating the weird Vaseline smear AA and sprites that don't have border issues, that delicious pixelated dithering on fog effects and shadows, it's great, accurate enough that the hi-res switch in perfect dark works

Careful with this, by the way. There is both a video plugin AND a RetroArch core with that name, and the latter you should avoid, since it's buggy and outdated. What you want to use is Mupen64Plus-Next, which has the aforementioned plugin and is much more up-to-date.

Slapping guest-advanced on top of that is probably the happiest I've been with the look of emulation. If only I could figure out how to get the DKC games for the SNES lookin' good. I think the closest I've come with those is using Mega Bezel's Smooth Adv preset, as much as people seem to hate smoothing shaders. I think I'd need a 4k display to really make those pre-rendered graphics come alive.
