How did it age so well? To this day, it still doesn't feel like a relic of the past, both mechanically and visually.

Games don't age but experiences do. Newer games are usually a step forward audiovisually, and you have to admit that a lot of early genre titles still had to find their footing in regards to controls and features and feel clunky compared to later releases. The old game hasn't changed since it's been released, but after playing newer games you release there are things that can be done better.

not him, but the deep movement mechanics and fine nuances that separates a pro player from a regular is way more pronounced in Quake 3 than it is in UT99. The movement allows for the development of personal styles and differences, especially in the CPMA mod. Even to the point where you can see which player is who, just by looking at his POV (the fluidness, the speed, the angles they make during strafejumping). Strafejumping alone is a sport in itself, and there's a whole mod and gamemode revolving around it (DeFrag mod, racing as fast as you can). In UT you have the dash, that's it. As a kid i did not care about any of this, and i was happy and ignorant playing CTF with bots and later online. As an adult i learned to appreciate the skills needed for Quake 3, there isn't anything quite like it..

The gameplay is simple and polished enough to where it doesn't age, and the art style is just stylized enough to where it doesn't look too dated.

A lot of old shooters are still fun, but have janky controls that take some getting used to. Quake 3 has controls that still feel perfect, and thus it still is just as fun today.

No, not literally. When people say games "age" they mean the technology becomes outdated, such as long CD load times in between every room on PlayStation Resident Evil, or poor texture filtering on N64 games. It can also refer to outdated game mechanics, like constant, inappropriate QTEs because RE4 did it and that game sold well. No one is speaking literally about age, but if you have a special needs IQ I understand how it can be confusing.

There are definitely outdated trends, like pacman dot mazes in the 80s, shmups in the early 90s, mascot platformers and street fighter clones in the mid 90s, cinematic FMV, point and click and AitD and Resident Evil clones in the late 90s. Let's face it we're old and pop culture has long passed us by. People who act like arcade game design hasn't aged are manchildren who refuse to face the sad reality.

Noone thinks you are speaking literally about age. You mean you think people think you are talking about games getting slower or duller as they age in some way? No, I'm pretty sure noone thinks that.

What he is saying, as I'm sure you're well-aware, is that it's an illegitimate concept. I agree with him, I also think it's an illegitimate and an invalid concept. We understand what you're talking about and the various statements you've made there - what we are talking about is that semantically and logically, it doesn't make sense to us. I mean what you're really doing there is simply replacing the term "outdated in a way that I disike" with "aging" and that is a dubious substitution, it means you're conflating the word "aging" with a bunch of characteristics that don't intrinsically have anything to do with it, as you acknowledge yourself since you agree it's not literal. So why should we go along with your conflations for?

I know it also makes you feel like a smart guy for pretending that we don't understand you and for suggesting that you "understand how it can be confusing" if they have a "special needs IQ". You must have felt so good as you really "got him" that way by suggesting he has a special needs IQ.

Did you ever take the time to wonder why you never see arguments where people pretend to suspect others of having special needs except on 4chan or similar places? Did you ever think about how it's generally the lowest classes of society and of edgelords under 18 or at most 21 who make those types of insults? Generally people with a lot of mental issues or the very learning problems they're accusing others of having?

So grow up man. He is entitled to disagree with the use of the term without your bullshit. When people dislike a term as being inaccurate, inappropriate and just plain wrong you could do the decent thing and just stop using it.

I think that sometimes they kinda can. Something which was absolutely genre defining on launch can end up feeling very dry and underwhelming when you compare to how much a genre developed in just a few years.
