What handhelds are you /vr/ chads using? What games are you playing now? Any imminent purchases of more handhelds to add to your collection?

I am playing Mobile Golf (GBC) and Zelda Alttp Redux on my Fire Emblem New 3DS

Planning to buy a RP3+ once lunar new year break is over

I have modded gameboys, an analogue pocket and a retroid pocket 3+. I barely use them. There's no point when I can play those games on a TV with a comfortable controller. Sucks since I burned cash on those.

emulator gives you save states and lots of options to change the display and such, but vc injects run smoother in my experience. i get some slight slight slowdown in pokemon gb games that i can hear in the songs which is annoying

but this Mobile Golf game is really difficult sometimes so I take the easy way out and save scum a bit, which is much quicker with gameyob emulator on the 3ds

I'm interested in a New 3DS but I don't like the screen's pixel density of the XL, so I want one of the regular-sized ones they released in Japan (and I think Europe).

What would be the best way to go about snagging one of those? One of those weird Japanese proxy services?

Please don't; the native 3DS version is broken, and the one most people know it's the DS one, which puts the poor's GB graphics through two steps of horrible upscaling, making the image blurry as fuck. Go for mgba for any GB/GBC emulation as it supports everything plus supergameboy.

I have more in my collection, but I actually use my Family Pocket FC3000 V2 (hopping around NES and Sega classics), my Zelda Game & Watch (very handy and enjoying playing Zelda 2 for the first time), and of course my Switch — if we're generous and call that a portable handheld. I use it for NSO classics. Also discovered there's an Oregon Trail game available now. Pretty good.
Considering an Evercade original or maybe the new white slab that doesn't look as fun. Might just get the Mario Game & Watch. Evercade might be too buggy/redundant and not worth it.

Last /vr/ game I finished was Super Mario Land DX on my 351V. I liked it, but haven't started the next one yet.
Downloaded some of the 3D Classics on my 3DS and tried out Kirby's Adventure. The 3D conversion is surprisingly good on an N3DS XL, but I'm not sure I want to replay the full game that way. Still need to play through some of the 3DS games I missed out on, but that's probably the only /vr/ relevant thing I'd still use it for.
Kinda tempted to get a Deck, but I'm not sure how much use I'd get out of it at this point.

It all depends on what you need. The 353V is double the price of the 35xx. 35xx will still do through ps1 which may be enough for most people. It's also built way better than the miyoo mini

>> No.9613837

>>9613748
depends on what you want to play and what form factor you want. Since you're specifying 4:3
>RG35xx - the cheapest current one, plays up to and including PS1 comfortably
>RG353v - similar size and shape, also can play n64, nds, some psp and saturn
>RG353p - shaped like a snes controller, actually has stacked shoulder buttons, same internals as the 353v

>> No.9613839

Depends on what games you want to play and what form factor you want.
353P and 353V are more powerful than the 35XX, so if you want to play anything harder to run than PS1, you're better off with one of those.

I've got a 35xx. It's fantastic if you only want PS1 games or earlier, and don't mind tweaking things yourself. Like I had to tape the d-pad contacts because the diagonals were too sensitive, and I installed GarlicOS over the stock one. Right now I'm paring down my library and then I'm going to work on adding box art.

The only issue I can't figure out is that I can't run any Kirby games for NES or Gameboy. I've been told that my roms are bad but I've tried every download I can find and none of them work.

Watch a guide to open it up to board level. Then cut small strips of tape to cover the inside edges of the conductive metal pads. This guide is for the switch pro controller, but if you scroll to the end it's the same idea: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Fix+D-Pad+Sensitivity+on+Switch+Pro+Controller/124493

The only thing is, the amount you cover the pads will affect diagonals sensitivity. So you may need to redo the taping if you do too much or too little.

>Everyone is wrong, I'm the only person who is right.

But seriously what do you suggest? What are the limits to discuss emulation hardware?

>> No.9619078

>>9619058
Glad you asked. I'm just throwing it out here, but I'm suggesting a whole new board, /ve/, for emulation, emu machines, tips and tricks, and emulator comparisons. Any gen would be able to go on it, and any console that can have emulators as well (ex emuing PSX on DC, emuing fami on 3ds, ect). However if that doesn't pan out a split general between here and /vg/. However I feel that emulation has come so far and gotten so broad that it warrents it's own board.

>> No.9619084

>>9619078
I say a split general because there's sometimes non-retro has been discussed in the thread, while I'm not a rules lawyer (just having a bit of a spastic moment) I still feel we should abide by the spirit of the board.

>> No.9619091

>>9619078
There were several suggestions in the past to add more boards (e.g. for 6th gen and newer systems) but there doesnt seem to be any desire to do so? Also there is no feedback on this topic from this board's management.

>> No.9619109

>you cannot delete posts this often
Well shit.
>>9619091
There's no desire or feedback from management because the management fucking sucks. There may not be outcry for an emulation board but there sure as shit was for a 6th&7th gen board. They didn't listen and you can tell that the vibe of the board shifted because of it.

Posted this in another thread, but anyway

I'm looking at retro handhelds. I'm kinda sick of my switch being such a power drain when emulating games. Anyone here have any recommendations? I've been looking at the retroid 3+ and the odin pro. I'd like to get gamecube emulation but it's something I probably wouldn't end up using much. My issue is that while the odin pro is neat and has a big screen, I feel the price is just close enough to the steam deck that an extra 100 would be better put towards a steam deck. I'm just so indecisive on this, but I want something that can run some android games like pokemmo and pokemon wilds whenever its get a android release

My plan is to eventually get a deck. Just have no need for it right now. Maybe in a years time. For now I just want to play pokemon rom hacks which are mostly GBC and GBA. What is the DS "experience" like with these handhelds? I have two 3ds's so it's not a big deal. Is it easy to download roms onto without using a PC? I probably will end up getting the RP3+

>> No.9620110

3+ over the 505 for sure. higher res screen and more ergonomic in my opinion. 3+ does have support for android games including pokemmo

>> No.9620131

>>9620105
DS works fine on Android, 3DS is still hit or miss as far as I know.
These are horizontal though, and the "experience" isn't the same for some games when the screen is side by side. I don't think that'd matter for Pokemon games though.
I think it's easier to download stuff on a computer and throw it on an SD card, but you can use the web browser on it to download stuff.

Yeah. Magic's gone I guess. Before covid I used to commute a lot, so I played handhelds all the time. Nowadays it doesn't make sense anymore. I kept buying systems thinking the problem is lacking hardware but I guess I was just chasing a feeling that won't come back. I even force myself to play on them sometimes but it doesn't last long, I just just rather play on the TV. And since I work from home and don't travel much, whenever I go out I'm doing something else and wouldn't be playing on a handheld.

Size would be only real con. I absolutely love mine. I'd recommend getting the cheapest option and installing a bigger drive and SD card if you're willing to tinker. I pre-ordered the expensive one when they were first announced.

>will it run okay with windows 11 on it.
I've tried W10 on SD card for dual boot and was a bit slow, but I've heard W10 runs better then W11 on it.
I'd really recommend keeping SteamOS on it unless you really want to play games like Destiny 2 or Fortnite (lmao why would you). EmuDeck sets up emulation for you and make it easy without having to tinker much and most games run just fine with Proton.

There's nothing really "bad" about the Steam Deck. Its the best bang for your buck x86 handheld that there is, the trackpads are a great addition that I sometimes prefer using over the right analog stick for camera movement, and Valve updates Proton enough that games work more than they don't from my experience. Plus when you connect it to a Dock, there's tons of great upscaling options for 2D/3D games with SteamOS compared to Windows by default.
The only real cons are personal nitpicks, like how some games like RE4 don't make full use of the 16:10 display, displaying black bars on the top and bottom like its in widescreen. And while its large and is more comfortable to use than expected, its bulky enough that it isn't exactly "portable" like the Ayaneo Air if that makes any sense. Small hand-handed people may want to wait for their Air Plus model instead. And of course since this is running Linux, not all PC games like say Silent Hill 4 boot from my experience. Still want to stress that its not all unplayable and game compatibility is very good at this point and only growing, but still keep in mind.

RG35XX and that new Miyoo Mini+ are both just a little bigger, but still pretty cheap and portable.
They seem like they'd be way more comfortable to use because of the size, and if you were carrying them in a bag, they'd barely take up any more space.
Worth considering if you want something more portable for emulation, or you could just spend that money on a GBA flash cart for that Micro instead if you don't have one already.

I haven't had a handheld ever since my GBA when I was a kid, and even though I really wanted to love it as a kid, it was difficult because of the poor screen, still have fond memories of it though. I'd say that my GBA was my main handheld experience, besides some simpler and cheaper stuff I'd get from time to time as a kid, though I loved all of them too. In recent years I got really into emulation, and the idea of being able to play on the go, or while playing in bed at home, is quite appealing, so I've been researching and decided that, at least to start out, it'd be best to go for something new, no used products, but cheap also... so I'm thinking of just getting handles for my smartphone, and the IPEGA-9167 seems quite good, especially due to the price and the DualShock styled D-Pad which I've always preferred... has anyone here ever used this specific device? Or any of these smartphone handles/gamepads? What do you think of them?

The PSP can also do PSP and PS1 lol. But I take your point. I'm excited for my own Vita coming in the mail. I've been strangely curious if its ability extends enough to unite every main Final Fantasy in the unbroken line (before 11, since it's an inaccessible MMO). And it looks like that's so. Obviously it can emulate NES and SNES, but it can also play the PSP versions of 1, 2, 3, 4; PS1 of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; and remaster of 10 (+10-2). Thankfully 2D PS1 load times are non-existent on SD card. Just an interesting thought there wasn't a handheld system that could do it before because PSP couldn't do FF10.

With FF10 & 10-2, it raises an interesting question if PS2 games can be ported in some way to Vita, either through emulation or recompile. Bet it would have no trouble running the unpacked files of KH1 you get with the KH unpacker.

Nah, I don't buy this argument. You said it yourself, PSP can run PS1 "because native" and I agree that's reality. It can emulate N64 OK, but still not SNES so the problem is difficult software engineering for a qualitatively different hardware package. The problem isn't generic power

>> No.9637958

>>9637903
Shit attitude. Generically, you're right people have to learn to mod some time. But the joystick problem is one common to everything now, including major products like the Switch. Spending more money doesn't save you from the problem because it was a bad design just about everyone started using in recent years. Now it's forcibly on the buyer to repair all these defect joysticks since no one responsible for making them will take accountability. You shouln't be there to run defense for that kind of crap. You have no stake in this except as a fellow consumer on the raw end.
Before anyone blames only the Chinese for manufacturing them, the problem is defective designs sent by majority Japanese engineers, which the Chinese are just copying since they have the designs.

I've been looking into getting a handheld for a while now, but I can't seem to pull the trigger on what I think is best. I know that for now I want to avoid spending much, because I haven't been into handhelds ever since my Game Boy Advance during the late 2000's, and even then I could never get as hooked onto it as I'd like, though the screen is definitely to blame for that, I didn't have many cartridges either... I just want to emulate NES, SNES, Master System, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear and PS1 really. At first the PSP seemed like the way to go, especially because I wanted one as a kid, but nowadays I can only get them used, same thing for the Vita, and we're never 100% sure in what state they've been left in by the previous owner, the lithium batteries also seem prone to fail nowadays. I then gravitated towards Chinese handhelds, but their cost is higher than I'd like... now I've been looking into those gamepads for Android phones, that essentially turn it into a Switch or Steam Deck... out of these, which ones are both affordable and reliable?

Phone emulation is really good as they have really powerful processors typically. It's all up to preference. The phone clamps work well, just check reviews to make sure joysticks are good, buttons are good, and there is no connectivity issues.

The only thing I hadn't considered when buying is the Mura effect because I didn't know about it at the time, but I guess it's the price to pay if one wants an OLED screen at a decent price since all the devices that have it either are the Vita 1000 or use the Vita one (also I was unable to find a Vita 1000 in sufficiently decent conditions at the same price, plus Vita drift is a thing so no thanks).

Just bought some vitas. All on eBay. 2/3 were Japanese used: 1000 and 1100. Had to return the "excellent condition FW 3.18" for being the latest firmware and having severe burn-in from the hot charging port. The other JP one arrived perfectly, exactly as the seller and I personally discussed, and had the correct FW, no mura spots, no burn-in.
It does matter to get a 3.60 or lower firmware, people are lying when they say high FW can easily get CFW.
Ordered a US 1000 Vita to replace the returned 1100.
No interest in the 2000. The IPS is easier to take care of and internal memory card is convenient but offers no good sub pixel arrangement for crispness, no good blacks or contrasts, plus the 1000 OLED has good motion controls.
The OLED must be properly cared for though. You can't overcharge it or max the current to 2A over 5v constantly or you'll get burn-in. And you need a sleep timer or screensaver to prevent mura/splotches from developing, and set the brightness low most of the time for the same reason. It's actually worrying how bright it is at max. Halfway was still pretty bright in light and minimum is highly visible in the dark. So far this Vita looks pretty worth it. I love my PSP and it won't replace it for those games or the superior XMB clicky sounds but Vita is very good at its own thing.
If you're willing to message sellers directly and talk like a human being, you'll get a really sweet deal on an excellent condition Vita and then it's just a matter of taking care of it properly.
One more thing. The JP vitas have a different battery model in them than the US and EU versions. They're all the same true capacity BUT the JPN ones have the top & bottom 20%-iles locked off. For most people, this will help them not wreck their batteries in 3 years. For power users, it could be a concern if you need the freedom. Personally, I recommend not maxing/mining your charge if you get US/EU anyway and just get a large 30,000mAh battery bank you can carry instead.

Well, I've decided to get the IPEGA PG-9167 to play some ROMs on my Android smartphone. I know it's a cheap brand and I've read reports of some people not having luck with their units, though I suppose all options have their risks in that regard, but it's quite cheap compated to most, hopefully it's not that common for it to be bad. I never bought something like it, usually prefer to stick with handhelds instead of smartphones, but it seemed practical and I wanted to give it a shot, so getting a cheap option to start made sense.

I'm getting sick of not having buttons, I know they have those buttons for you to press on the screen, but it's awkward because I'm not feeling anything, I've managed to handle it well on things that are slower and/or turn based, but on anything that's quicker and focused on action and reflexes? Not actually feeling a button or stick is just off... so I'm getting a controller, I don't mind those that are actual controllers, but I prefer the ones that are handles that stick to the sides, reminds me of the GBA and PSP, which is a form factor I'm fond of.

Out of the main mobile controllers on the market, mostly the ones with this form factor, which one is the best? And which one is the best choice out of the cheaper ones?

I really wish Sony would step back in the portable market, both the PSP and PS Vita were excellent, back in the day with a good library, especially for the PSP, and nowadays through emulation, they are much better than any Chinese handheld when it comes to built quality to me, they feel premium, afterall they were exactly that when they came out. I don't even think Sony needs to make a full on handheld again, afterall both them and SEGA have tried to take on Nintendo in this market and failed, at least in sales and mainstream appeal, what they made was actually quite good. One thing Sony could do, since they do make smartphones, is one of those controllers for it, to sort of turn a phone into a Nintendo Switch Lite. I'm aware of the Backbone One (PS Edition), but that's just a Sony licensed version of an existing product, I'd like the actual DualShock directional buttons and stick placement.

I have only tried the Gamesir X2 USB Type-C (Bottom row, center column in your picture), but... The most Important things I can remember:

- Buttons and d-pad are on a whole new level compared to the RG351V I own,Provided that you like clicky tactile feedback.

- The short grips don't make it comfortable for twin stick gameplay. If you want to play FPS, get something bigger with grips that extend downwards, like the ones in the top corners. Or a smartphone clip for a ds4 or XB controller.

- It's not a great solution if you are going to use it on the go during short commutes, or if you have to change trains every 15-20 min. With no built-in battery and no off-button it keeps draining the phone's battery all the time, so you will want to disassemble it as soon as your train or bus gets to destination (and you need to be careful to not mess the usb port on the phone, that spring is extra strong).

Nothing of this is a problem if you will use it at home or get to sit on on public transport for 40 minutes without interruptions.

- Think carefully about which model you want, USB-C or Bluetooth. Many Android games don't support USB controllers (Apex Legends, but that one is dead now). I have the Xbox version and it's guaranteed to work with Gamepass, and Retroarch detects it ok, although it may give you some remapping headaches from time to time.

My personal experience:
1) Get the Gamesir X2 because another handheld is overkill and I already have a good quality phone that integer scales GBA perfectly and can do almost every system
2) I spend more time getting the phone in than playing (exagerated)
3) I have a close call while disassembling it (controller ends in the floor of the train while it brakes)
4) Another mishap happens when I can't grip it properly, folds itseld and one analog stick cap goes flying
5) I end getting an RG351v, the Gamesir ends at home. I keep saying I will use it on the couch, but... nope. In love with the 351, playing Pokémon Clover.

Huh?

You can download both stock images here:
https://win.anbernic.com/download/261.html

The Android image is installed on the device's native storage not on an SD card like ArkOS. Download it above, it will come with a small tool to flash it onto an SD card. After that slot the card in your device's first port (TF1/INT.) and power it on, the update should start. Once it's finished you can remove the SD card and use it for something else.

If you ever run into problems of black screens or boot loops you'll probably have to open it up and disconnect the battery and re-flash the native Android OS after that.

I think so, but i did spend nearly 200$ by the time it was said and done. I used the funnyplaying laminated ITA kit, originally I had installed a no cut IPS kit but I didn't like how the display sat so far back from the glass. the ITA kit uses the bottom screen from a DS lite if i'm not mistaken and has the oem pixel grid effect. because it's a laminated kit it fits right up against the glass and there is no air gap.

the ita kit works on any GBA but on a 40 pin motherboard you need to remove a surface mount resistor. you no longer need to solder a power wire but it does have the option to solder button controls for brightness which I did, because I dont like the touch sensor control for that. with a laminated kit you need to use a shell specifically designed for it.

the install itself is not difficult. fitting the screen in so it sits flush can be a little finicky but once its in the rest just goes right together.

have you tried apotris?

flip it over, and then if you look at that tab by the nintendo logo at the top of your shell, the tab at the top of the bracket in the middle fits in UNDER that tab on the shell. the ribbon cables go into those slots near the top right of your bracket, and then the daughter board folds over on top of the bracket itself. tape it with a piece of kapton tape or whatever you have.

you need to slide that tab under that hook at the top before it will go in. i had a difficult time with this because even once it fits, you need to push around to make sure the screen is actually flush up front before you screw down the motherboard.

Ok. more question. Cant get mupen to run at all, it just crashes arkos, no matter which version I use, parallel works with some n64 games but only a few. Im pretty familiar with arkos but combined with daijisho im kind of outta my depth here. Tho, I can already tell its a solid frontend. Is there a certain mupen I need to be running?

I asked earlier in the thread about flash carts, and someone recommended looking on AliExpress for them so that I can get a better deal, but after looking I found picrelated for about ten more dollars. Am I better off still getting a flash cart, or should I get an Anbernic instead? I only really care about GBA games in this case, and I heard the screen on the DS isn't great for it so I'm wondering if I should get one of these AliExpress consoles instead.

Anbernic took my money, I didn't get any product and they refuse to give my money back. The courier had the brilliant idea of leaving my parcel on the street and obviously it was stolen, I have escalated this with yodel many many times and they insist the retailer have to offer a resolution for me.

I've been emailing Anbernic for a month and is like talking to a wall, their response is sporadic, the replies makes no sense and keep referring me back to yodel over and over. They won't take any responsibility. I am at a loss here, everyone is pointing fingers at each other and won't offer resolution. I lost £208 and I am fuming.

They're both owned by parent company Moorechip and share parts that don't seem to be used by any other chinkheld manufacturers. They also seem to share some software considering retroarch does (or at least at one point did) read the RP2+ as an Odin under the controller profile. There was also a funny screenshot from around launch of the RP3 where the RP3 referred to itself as an Ayn Odin on a BIOS screen, or some similar information readout. I can't remember the exact context so hopefully someone here has the pic saved.

They are brands of Moorechip, a Chinese car electronics manufacturer. Their handhelds are made of leftover car parts. The Odin is basically a satnav with a controller.
Anbernic and Powkiddy are the same company too. Powkiddy is the parent company, Anbernic is actually just their brand name. Or Powkiddy is the marketing division of Anbernic, depending on who you ask. They apparently had a falling out over registering a third brand name to sell Anbernic devices as white label goods, which is why Anbernic has such huge logos on their devices now. I guess any corporate structure makes sense if you're Chinese enough.

It's probably because Anbernic started off as one of those crappy white label resellers. They might have lucked into a relationship with a decent manufacturer and ended up absorbing each other. I'm just guessing at this point, though.

Anbernic (Retrogame in that time) started as a reseller of powkiddy shit.
Then, one guy one day started making software for one of their products, the rs97, and wanted to make his own special handheld. So he reached out to Powkiddy, who had given him the bootloader for the rs97 so he could make better software for it, to help him in procuring the needed volume of chips (one guy alone can't even get in contact with chip manufacturers).
And thus, the Anbernic rg350 was born. Brainchild of Tony Jih, it was of much higher quality than the usual shit, so they created the Anbernic brand just to differentiate
Powkiddy = Anbernic = Retrogame = TrimUI
LDK = Moorechip = Retroid = Ayn
