I have a kindle DX I got from ewaste but the battery barely worked on it and then it just stopped working altogether. I think if I put a new battery in it it'd fix the problem but I guess I don't care enough to spend $15 on it.

When it was working I remember that trying to use Calibre to put things onto it was a chore. Calibre is also a poorly made piece of software that I didn't enjoy using. The reader also didn't like PDFs for some reason. Also, it is pretty big, the size of a spiral notebook. So I can't bring it with me anywhere in a pocket or anything like that. It's also ugly and clunky. I prefer normal books. If I want to read a PDF I'm content just reading it on my computer at home. A separate ink display for documents only would be nice to have at home, though.

Few months ago, I was buying too many books, spending too much and hardly reading.
Decided to try a Kobo and it's a total game changer and I don't really see myself going back to physical as my preferred method of reading.
I love being able to customize my experience, I made it so I can't see the page number or chapter title in top margin of the book, it's just the text. Always have the perfect font and size, can read in many more positions that you can't with a normal book and can also read in the dark. I've read more in the past few months than the entire year before.

And now I can save and get nicer physical editions of books I truly love and are actually worth physically owning instead of wasting money on shitty editions in order to get as many as possible

Well. If it makes you feel better:
When ereaders first launched and before tablets really took off and got gud in the 2010's, us wapanese folks would convert manga ourself either through a shitty program from mobiread if u were teh sux or through photoshop if you had any design talent, could script or worked in the translation game already.

Back then screens were kinda shitty too, 166>167 PPI, 4 shade greyscale so you'd have to put effort in to make things look good.
You'd crop out the margins, balance the levels, add a proper small margin that matched the ratio, resize, then clean, merge double pages etc and sanity check before exporting & dithering for 4 shade greyscale, and exporting to PDF because they didn't like using CBZ/CBR at the time and if your device was extra gimpy you'd convert to .mobi.

What a life that was. 5-10 minutes work depending on the scan per chapter or 20-30 minutes per volume if doing in bulk.
It was fun, it was living.
Now you throw that shit on screen and it looks fine since the hardware's improved and most software can dither properly now or can even be disabled in koreader.

Manga looks okay on an 8 inch but 10-10.5 inch feels like the sweet spot and 12.9>13 inch and above is still luxury. It's a tough choice between eink and an ipad.

Hell, over half the market who "buy" ebooks use a kindle due to their undercutting dominance and ethos on stripping out every feature to keep the device cheap and locked into their ecosystem.
Out of those kindle users, most are rocking old devices, stuff from 2012>2016, paperwhites, voyages etc.
Amazon didn't even consider selling "luxury" devices like the Oasis again until 2016 and they still, still put in a 6 incher. It wasn't until late 2017 that Bezos finally deemed the public worthy of having a 7" device to compete with the mid range kobos of the world and he marketed it as high end.
They're only now trying to branch PW off into mid range (6.8"), oasis at 7" and scribe with 10.2" which is less than a year old.

So most amazon fans & users will be using 6" displays if they're not hardcore enough to roll with the upgrade cycle or spend over 100% more to buy an Oasis.

>if you only do light reading, computers are fine but ereaders are best to prevent eye strain.
I suffer from eye strain, intense light sensitivity & migraines and I will extol the virtues of eink when & where I can for saying it's nice to not have to deal with a backlight but a FL however-
at a mere 6 inches, to get a decent amount of text on the screen: you need a fairly small font size or to give up on margins. That's not a lot, that's not a lot at all and if you're reading with glasses, that's worth considering too.
Now a larger device can help this, 7" & 8" devices can fit a lot more text on the screen or at better sizes more similar to a paperback and 10" devices are amazing but you still have other factors to consider such as lighting.

While eink isn't transparent so is frontlit, you still need to use the frontlight and it's not as scalable as one might think so you should be in a well lit environment to use. In these cases you're most likely going to be using heavily tinted glasses but at this point you're no worse off than trying to balance display backlighting, bias & ambient lighting using display strobing, SW & HW dimmers and the like to read comfortably and depending on the position of the screen, this can be much more comfortable for the reader and prevent eye strain more than eink since the device will usually be in the intermediate vision range instead.

eink's great, a 6 incher isn't going to solve your eye strain overnight and if they've got a setup that works and can work around commercial 16:9 displays then good on them, text is reflowable, you can display multiple pages too. There's nothing saying this anon isn't using good display tech, a solid bias light, ambient light to match and good tinted glasses to help. It could be more comfortable for them than throwing a hundred bucks at amazon for a measly 6 inches.

Here is a 15.6" laptop vs a 6 inch (standard size) Amazon Kindle.
You have more than enough room to increase the font if you wish, you can fit the equivalent of 3 kindles (3:4). That's 3 pages and you've got a decent bit of room left over for margins. Hell, drop it to 2, go margin mad and enjoy your large font books!
If it works. It works, good on you.

Sure, they're coming in to shitpost, they always will. You can have the people who want to read on their phones back if you want too but they did answer the OP post, they outlaid their plans and even included their current reading setup and solution (which I'd be interested in).

Nope. It was mentioned in the last thread about styles but Kindle unlimited etc is a value addon for prime with what's basically the equivalent of shovelware. You'll get a few popular things, then 8 self published fantasy series & romance novels etc and 200 self help books.

There's a good documentary about the audiobook side of it ft some of the scams they're born from in this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biYciU1uiUw
Amazon prime etc inn general are a bit of a scam if you're not using said services. It's main adds are the delivery, the video service (though that goes through phases) and kindle, audible etc are all value add ons where appropriate and their paid services are much the same. They have to fill the library with something to meet their claim of thousands of books/products etc and so a lot of it's trash.
With something like prime video/netflix etc it's easier to have half decent content because there's decades of syndicated TV and movies to pull from and there's a lotta hits, the real filler content there is usually cheap shows from the 00's that failed or budget movies from studios like asylum etc. With books, it's the self help categories, romance fics, self published fanfics like twilight etc.

The only reason to really use services like that is when you can't pirate some obscure thing that's on it and it'd cost more to buy it than to use the service for a couple of months/rip the content from it.

>>22307111
I'm sure there's plenty of that trash inc on audible soon enough.
What matters to me is delivery & performance, something to make it legible.

Trying to listen to something like microsoft sam or siri reading a passage is soul destroying, they can't do pace.

Congress adjourned.
The US doesn't care what Bezos does with your data. Bezos could print your data on a 12 year old belizean girl and rape her hole to hole on webcam for 18 hours as a live event on prime video and get away with it.

Zoomer attention spans are hell, but owning physical books has long been reduced to ~aesthetic~ bookshelves, quirky bookshop visits and pseudo-intellectualism and validation of just consuming, just showing off.
Compared to ‘’data hoarding’, where you literally get no validation from anyone, because no one can see what the hell you put on the reader, you’d actually have to work for the satisfaction of the media, by atleast reading.
TLDR:Piracy, ironically, is really for those that actually want to enjoy the work, because you could gain nothing else from it.

I wanted to read The Making of Modern Japan
I didn't want to buy the book so I bought a Kindle Paperwhite hoping to read the pdf I downloaded
Well that didn't work out but my Kindle has been one of the best purchases I've ever made
I have so many books on mine and have read so many great books it's one of my treasured possessions
