Is all science fiction from the 60s/70s supposed to be bad?

Just finished Ubik. It was pretty good, a bit of an unpolished, pulpy feel but the core of it still manages to be interesting.
What does /lit/ think of PKD? This was my first shot at his work, but from what I've heard it was his peak - is it still worth reading more of him or not?

One of the strangest books I've read. Kind of seemed like Phillip was just dicking around.

Opinions on Phillip K. Dick's ''Ubik''? I quite liked it.

I think he peaked in the mid-to-late 60s. Ubik is the best and one of my favorite books of all time. Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch is also great, and A Maze of Death is a very underrated quick read

First and foremost there will be spoilers from here on out. Two theories.
>One
Runciter is dead the whole time. Perhaps he is even similar to Jory (the ending and last sentence especially of chapter 14 made me consider this). Jory is creating the worlds, but because of some natural talent Runciter is influencing the world as well (why it regresses to his past and the money has him on it), despite him being unaware. I like this theory, though the joe chip coin isn't explained very well. My best "explanation" would be maybe ubik's 'development' is simply halflifers realizing their potential for controlling their halflife (everyone has some, runciter and jory just have some natural talent). Once Joe gains enough control to sorta make his own ubik, maybe he is strong enough to sorta flow over into runciter's world as well. This is stretching it a bit though. Also, I was thinking maybe Sammy Mundo was the one who got them all into coldpac. According to runciter he was in a coma with no brain activity at all, so he really has no presence in the dead world. Maybe hinting that he survived.

>Two
maybe Runciter died later in the book. Perhaps at the very end when the technician was adjusting electrical equipment for the half-life communication. This theory has the advantage of someone communicating with them through halflife (runciter). You'd kinda expect someone would talk to freshly dead people. The joe coin again raises some issues here though. If Runciter is alive, then his communication just causes wonky shit like the coins and bathroom writing and other shit (all of that feels more explained with runciter being dead imo). So what causes joe's face for runciter when he does die? Them merging near each other in half-life? Kinda a stretch to assume a live to dead communication produces the same effect as merging.

Also possible, as a friend who just finished the book as well thought, is it's just a dick ending, designed to make you think. And hey, it is kinda fun trying to think of a way to connect all the dots.
