Anything else is shit although sometimes they can spin something decent, Graham McNeill once wrote A Thousand Sons. Another thing, even the best writte a lot of shit (Wright and Abnett wrote a lot of dumb shit). The thing with 40k is, chose your faction and prey that one of the good author write something good for then at least once. Odds are you get some CS Goto tier hack.

There is also Peter Fehervari but that guy is 100% on a league of his own, not good or bad, just weird in his own way, the guy got a little in-universe 40k were he plays with his Dark Coil bullshit. I think it's interesting once but overall it's just more of the same.

No, I don't see him arguing for athiesm, I see him talking about how organized religion (in this case the Hindu gods) can corrupt and sway large groups of people. That's what Sam was against, not religion itself. The Hindu gods were trying to suppress the people on the planet technologically, and Sam wasn't having that and so in a neat way he became the Buddha to try to stop the effect that the Hindu gods were having on the masses. If thinking "organized religion can be bad = athiesm" then OK, but I don't think that statement is true. I mean, none of the gods in this book were truly "divine" so perhaps that's Zelazny saying "athiesm is true". anyway we can all see it how we want anon, good night :^)

I mean none of them are real gods. Sam's was tired of a bunch of tyranical spoiled fuckers doing whatever they wanted because they got to the top of the mountain first, not because there were good at something. If they did a good job I don't think he would had chosed that path, the whole planet was pretty fucked in the hands of a incompetent minority. Also while they played at being gods Nirriti was about to go space Hitler on everybody's ass. The message in my view was "you can only get so far with your bullshit, even if you are god, until people get tired of your shit".

Anyway 10/10 book the way Zelasny mix tech with magic is great. Ie it took me a while to realize garuda was a jet fighter. So let's assume a lady knows how to throw punches... A man would be able to punch much, much harder and could resist her through brute strength. If the lady knows techniques on jiu-jitsu or stuff like that (which the average man knows nothing about), then mayyyybe they could pin an average Joe down... Maybe. I'm not even sure about that but let's just grant that they could.

Nobody has self-respect anymore

Finally got to read picrel, it was a good but weird one. There are three books here, two are good and one is pretty lame. The first is the title's story, a hardcore military sci-fi, quite liked. The second is Jack Crow's tale which is also good but pretty disconnected in tone from the first, it's basically an adventure space opera. Then you got the MC backstory which is simply stupid, an absolute cliché full of melodrama. Thank God that was over fast. Imo this could have worked as two separate novellas and without the "MC is a super special guy" part, just a regular soldier that is really good at his job fighting his own personal war and going mad in the process. It's weird people barely mention the second half, if you are not into that shit you will hate half of the book. I read some people saying those parts helps to build the climax but I think it just breaks the action for no good reason.

At least now I get the comparisons between this and The Subterrenean War series, and to be quite honest it does the same story but better. The first book basically fuses Jack and Felix into one guy that spends 90% of the story inside his armor getting PTSD without time for the P (man is shell-shocked from day one and the war doesn't pause for him) with less "war bad" and more "war is a racket".

I don't mind shit like the Iron throne being silly huge, but Westeros being the size of South America, the Wall being 700 feet tall, Winterfell being fucking enormous, all of these things are unnecessarily large and then actively take you out of the story when the plot makes these outrageous sizes irrelevant. I don't care if most of the North's troops are in the Riverlands you can't tell me the Ironborn conquered an area the size of France in a medieval blitzkrieg or that Theon was able to take let alone hold a castle the size of Winterfell with 20 men for any meaningful time when he doesn't have enough men to man the walls. I am fine with giant things if they were treated like giant things, but outside of the Wildlings struggling to scale the Wall with Jon, most of the time the impact of their size is actively undermined by what happens in the story.

This was alright. It's the beginning of a new series by the authors of the Expanse (James S.A. Corey is a pen name for two people). It's getting the full marketing push and getting shilled everywhere because it's the kind of thing publishers salivate over, a promised "epic" new series from authors with a "proven track record" of selling books and getting licensing deals.

It definitely feels like it's written with adaptation in mind. The book, which has the distinct feeling of being the first book in a series (like, the plot ends up taking it exactly where you already knew it would need to go to tee up planned sequels) manages to take the reader through a parade of (what will be) "visually impressive" set pieces. I think the highlight is interesting world building and creative designs for the many alien species. The characterization is thin except for a couple of characters who are obviously being set up for future stories. The scenario is simple yet thought provoking. If I described the premise thoroughly (which would be "spoilers" because it's not fully revealed until the middle of the book), you'd be able to guess pretty much all of the "twists" in the plot. Even though it didn't surprise me in that regard, I can tell I am still going to be thinking about the implications of this one for a long time. Despite all my minor criticisms here, I liked it better than it sounds like I'm saying.
