Satsuki is the best female character in Tsukihime.

She got her life saved by Shiki, and what does she do? Does she cling to him like some sort of desperate, pathetic slut?

Hell no.

She just admires the virtues of the man who rescued her from afar, content with merely observing him. This carries on for years, as she slowly develops a true, pure love that refuses to fade with the passage of time. Just watching Shiki was enough for her, but then one day she actually gets to walk home with him.

The amount of happiness this brought her was impossible for her to hide, and she finally got to interact one-on-one with the man she had come to love. Things were progressing even better than she had ever dreamed; it was almost looking like she could show Shiki the pure, innocent love she had for him and maybe even be accepted!

But then, she got bitten and turned into a vampire. Naturally, when that is the case, it is well-nigh impossible to resist the inevitable bloodlust. Satsuki even has to cave in to it. But when Shiki was put in danger by it, she actually manages to control the insatiable desire, and hold on to her sanity for the very end. All so she could protect the one who protected her so long ago; all so she could tell him the feelings she had kept to herself for so long.

And what was her reward?

The man she loves ceases her existence.

Isn't it sad, Sacchin? ;_;

Honestly, Sacchin is (or would be, if she had a route) the Near Side equivalent of Kohaku. She's a pitiable character not just because she gets shit upon by circumstances that are no fault of her own, but also because she gets killed by the man that she understands best. In fact, that only she understood.

Arc never tried to really understand Shiki, the romance between them was initiated by Shiki. Ciel didn't understand him. She tried, but all her observations were colored by her expectations and prejudices. Akiha and Hisui both hid things and lied to him, trying to hide the truth of his past. They might have understood him a bit better than Arc or Ciel, but both of them constantly underestimated him. Hard to say with Kohaku. She knew what Shiki was capable of better than the other female leads at least.

Satsuki, on the other hand, was the only person (besides Aoko) who not only saw both sides of Shiki's personality (Kohaku knew about the duality of Shiki's nature as well), she understood the paradox of the actual person who existed between the two extremes: The natural born killer who hates violence. The person who loves life the most, even though he stands closest to death.

Yeah, granted. Didn't really mean to disparage the other heroines so much as point out the fact that when it comes to Shiki, Sacchin has them all beat hands down.

That's probably why her route was pulled. When someone has THAT much of an edge over the other heroines in a VN, it either trivializes the other routes, making you end up hating the canon love interest simply because she overshadows the rest of the cast so much (see: Clannad) or else it just makes you rage when the canon route has the MC pick someone else. Kind of a lose/lose equation. Nasu decided it would be best for Sacchin to die while she was still beautiful.
