Anybody who claims Japanese grammar is just gatekeeping. Sure, it does take a while to get used to understanding spoken and written Japanese, but it's not because Japanese itself is difficult. Rather, it just takes a really long while to get used Japanese vocabulary and idioms and all that sort of stuff. Some constructions might seem kind of odd from native English speaker's perspective, but they're really nothing anywhere near impossible to decipher.
