personally i prefer to learn vocabulary from sentence cards using a loosely-defined grading system.

first i'll only focus on the vocabulary word itself and try to recall its reading and definition. if i don't know both, then it's a fail. that is, unless it has multiple readings or definitions. in that case i'll use the sentence for disambiguation.

afterward i'll read the sentence, marking it wrong if i misunderstood anything i felt i should have known. so if i fail to read a word that i should know or misunderstand the meaning of the sentence itself, then it's a fail.

call it overly complicated and/or sloppy, but it works well enough for me.
