I was inspired to draw what can be considered as my style by two things:

The first was an anime movie that somehow aired on a New York City TV station in the late1970s. It was a fantasy movie, where a guy encountered a kingdom under an enchantment of stillness, and a Princess held hostage by a "goblin",but one that could shspeshift. The hero was aided by the Princess's entourage who were transformed into mice of the clothes wearing kind, and the maid that interacted with him impressed my hormone addled mind, and I started making my own character to put into a story with her,and came up with this picture. I would love to see that anime again, but beyond what I put here I cannot tell more.

The second was Watership Down, the movie. My family would frequent a place we'd call The Auction, which did have items that would be contested over by an auction, butthe main attraction was the hundred or so huksters that peddled all sorts of stuff. I found a book that was filled with stills from the movie, so I conceived personalities for the various distinct characters since I never got to see the movie until years later. And I made Rabbit Romance comics. Countless pages of them. I wouldn't inflict them on you,as I can barely tolerate them trying to read any. But it was storytelling. An exercise in plot and visual construction.
So much for inspiration. I next made a female anthromorph sorceress asa counterpart to his fighter-thief shtick, and found that I could spout exposition out of her mouth for panels, and that is boring reading. So I began to consider of another character, to build stories around, a clever kid,and inspiration hit for the third time. Crackerjacks. The sailor kid with the pug. So during a Dungeons and Dragons game where I often had a sketchbook out,I drew a chubby fellow wearing a sailor outfit, but made him a hedgehog so I could place the hat on top of the head prickles. And the rest is history.
