Where is the dragon appearing? Is it a cave or old ruins? Or is it just attacking an unsuspecting settlement or city? If it's being encountered within its own lair, you can always sprinkle something about how the area seems to expand exponentially the deeper you go in, making it an ideal home for something really huge. Or if your dragons like to shapeshift, you can throw caution to the wind if the dwelling is not big enough for the full sized beast to enter, given you aren't aware of their shifting capabilities. Either way, if the adventure is meant to expect the unexpected, a dragon appearing without much buildup would be fine. They're staples after all.
