You talking about the rough texture or that thready stuff at the bottom? Not sure about the thready stuff, but if you are airbrushing it and it's coming out rough you might need some more thinner. Alternatively you could get a very high grit (read 3k+) wet sand cloth and smooth it down.

>> No.8069063

>>8069042
It seems to spin the filaments as part of coming out of the airbrush; I think the coarse texture happens for similar reasons.

I tried thinning it with high purity rubbing alcohol/denatured alcohol at one point and that only seemed to make it worse. Should I try the Mr Hobby retarding thinner? Thought that was only for the paints.

I know MHRT is a combination of thinner and curing inhibitor for the Mr Hobby line of lacquer paints. I expect it might work for the surfacer products as well, but I don't want to spend the money on something that would otherwise be useless to me if it doesn't work. Thus the question.

You can try airbrushing with acrylic. As long as you use a proper sealant afterward (otherwise it's too delicate to even handle by itself) it should be fine.. and it won't do the threading stuff either. You can thin with ethanol/water but I tend to buy a specialized thinner, it works better than both of them (plus ethanol actually won't thin all acrylics, it will fuck some of them up actually and make them clump up and separate etc). Plus, if you mess up bad or decide you don't like the color, you can just swab it with some warm water and start over with a lot less mess than other paint types.

Using acrylic's a bit different though. It may need several coats to look perfect and also the motions for doing shading/gradients with it feel.. different too, it's hard for me to put my finger on it. But anyway I like acrylic a lot more, just saying it's an option.

He lied. And it's your fault for not using better common sense and doing better homework.
#1. when you airbrush, the material you're spraying should have the consistency of milk. At first stir you should have known it had to be thinned. I know you tried thinning it which leads me to #2:
#2. Mr surfacer is lacquer based. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Mr+surfacer+is+based get yourself some Mr Color thinner.
One bottle to use. and one bottle to pour down that hobby shop guy's throat. since he talked shit.

MHRT extends the working time of their lacquer paints so you can *handbrush* small details and paint shit like eyes. Using it for surfacer is overkill. Not to mention if you airbrush it, the atomization will help it evaorate and reduce its usefulness before the paint hits the model.

I'm thinking about ordering a playing card set (52 cards) from amiami. Has anyone done that before, or ordered any small item for that matter? What's the packaging like? Is there a difference between SAL and EMS?

>> No.8078548

>>8076778
Amiami tends to pack everything pretty well, almost too much packaging. I personally haven't ordered anything small from amiami but I can tell you the difference between sal and EMS.

EMS is the fastest and you always get your package fast. It also costs the most. Sal costs less than EMS but takes longer, widely depends on where you live, it could take just a day or two longer to a week longer. There are two types of Sal shipping, registered and unregistered. Registered has a tracking number and the package is insured so if it is lost you will get your money back. Sal unregistered is like 500 yen less than registered and is good for cheap items. For the most part I would advise sal registered unless it is something you really, REALLY want. Some here swear to sal unregistered due to the savings which do add up.

You can't really. Its a garage kit, note the name. Its a garage kit (from e2046.com ) that as all other garage kits come un-assembled and unpainted. So unless you can paint that well you would either have to forget about it, learn to paint that well or pay someone a fair amount of money to paint it.

The GK can be found at: http://www.e2046.com/product/7648

Even though it says preorder it just means that they are waiting for enough people to reserve one before they make another run of it.

Go to Akihabara. Plenty of shops around. Even though mandarake has like 8floor, only 1floor is dedicated to toys. Maybe their Nakano branch has got better goods.
I found that Chua Churam while just walking around.
They also sell some of the newer fig below the market price. Most of the nendo less than 2k, the GSC snail girl was only at 3.9k and the GSC Yakumo around 7k.
I also spotted GSC Alicia Florence for like 8k but I didnt bring enough money to buy that. Will probably take another trip there later.

Actually, just the other day, I was thinking about the feasibility of flying to Tokyo to go to Nakano and Akiba every so often, buying a whole lot of merchandise for currently airing anime and stuff like that, then taking it all back to America/Europe and selling it for something like 50-75% higher than what you paid for it. Given my experience at the dealer rooms at the conventions that I've been to, that kind of mark up wouldn't really be all that surprising.
If you could pull a profit from that, you could potentially be going there every couple of months or so to refill your stocks. Biggest problem, aside from getting a steady customer base, would probably be shipping all the shit overseas, but I'm sure you could find ways to get it all across for cheap.

You know you could just not ship it via airmail. Find a service that ships via sea, those freight services may take longer but cost but a fraction of the cost. really though, how many figs do you honestly thing you could sell at a convention. I head from someone here a while back it can cost hundreds just to sell stuff at them. Even then, not enough to cover the costs. The best thing to do if you are set on selling at a con would be to find a proxy service (or someone) that will make an order for you and ship it via freighter boat or whatever floats your boat.

>> No.8089677

>>8089487
Yeah, I was thinking that shipping by sea would be the most economical, though it would obviously take weeks or months to do. And having a liaison with someone in Japan that would do the buying for me and ship it overseas, rather than spending over a thousand bucks for the trip over here, would obviously cut costs, though that would mean I wouldn't get to come to Akihabara as often (which kind of was one of the main appealing points to the idea for me).

Not to mention pretty much every other meguca so far has a suffering face, and yet the one with the most potential for one only gets happy faces. Seriously, they could have gone with a berserk face, a crying face, way more potential than any of the other characters, and somehow we end up getting her "gomen gomen" face she does like twice in the whole show.

I'm kind of mad, honestly. Still buying them all.

If your budget is:

Below 500 : might as well just get an iPhone 4S and take pictures with that with good lighting. Cheap compacts in low light will just look crappy. They can look decent if well lit.

Around or above 500:
Compact - Lumix LX5 or Canon S95 (only thing is for that price you can also get entry DSLR which will take better pictures.)

Got an Okuu dakimakura today, the store didn't declare anything on the customs form.... wonder how they managed to get away with that. Planning on decorating my room to be all Okuu. Okuu dakimakura, check. Okuu blankets, waiting to be shipped. Okuu figures, griffon out in december, they need more. I think I'll need some stretched canvas prints next...

seriously though, they need more Okuu figures. I mean, other than a GK there is only like three Okuu figs, one coming out from griffon, one from a trading figure set and the other don't know where it's from but I saw it on ebay for way too much for a tiny fig.

almost never again. Most are a one time run. Basically, if you see one for preorder you want, if you don't pre-order it or buy it RIGHT when it comes out you will either never get it or pay 3x the price for it. Mandrake is a good store for buying older figures (you have to use japanese words not english words). also, forgot to mention, since you are starting you should just look at new figs for a while, my advice to you. You also might want to make like a spreadsheet to keep track of orders and everything too. Be careful of ebay as there are many fakes and if you see any place ever selling from china or hong kong, avoid it like the plague.

Also, there are something called garage kits, e2046.com sells em for pretty decent prices. Thing is, garage kits are un-assembled and unpainted. Not advised for beginners to painting.

ult/product/e_display.html

I highly recommend this azusa fig, plus the price is pretty good at the moment.

Also, if you are interested in GKs I can give some advice, since you haven't painted a human fig you might want to wait until e2046 has a sale on and then get a figure you want, they often have some pretty decent sales. You might want to sign up for their newsletter so you don't miss any deals. Other than that there are some pretty decent tutorials for painting GKs online (google is your friend). My only question to you is if you have any experience with airbrushing, I'd assume so since you make model (cars?). Airbrushing is almost a must for GKs.

Speaking of GKs I keep saying I'll paint that okuu GK i've got laying around but eventually I will paint it, just don't know when I'll start, im the kind of person where if it can't be done in one sitting (no matter how long it is) it isn't worth doing.

I airbrush mostly gundam model kits (though I haven't touched it in a year)
I usualy get my stuff from hobbyfan as I've heard bad things about e2046's recast quality

>> No.8101246

>>8101179
There may be some things that aren't of superb quality on e2046 but most of the things I've bought came great, the Okuu fig the best, no mold lines, hardly any work to be done. Reading reviews may help avoid any mold issues.

As for their recasts of more... mainstream figures, like ones made by any company, I would avoid those only because they cost quite a bit more on average. As long as you shop only GKs and read the review's you shouldn't run into any issues.

The only thing I can't speak of is their "GK robots" since I have never ordered any of them. I wouldn't be surprised if those had problems based off the amount of parts and the types of details in the parts.

Painting gundam models while not entirely different is still quite different from painting figures. For the most part you don't have any hard edges for highlighting or shading, everything has to be more... dynamic I guess, as opposed to rigid.

Also, forgot to mention this, building a GK is fairly different from building other types of kits. Not always do the parts fit exactly the way you want them so sometimes you have to sand em and sue some modelling epoxy/green stuff to fill in the gap. However this is not specific to Gks, even gamesworkshop's miniature resin models (specifically forge world) have these issues. You also have to remove the mold release agent, which can be fairly easily done by soaking it in a cleaning agent, even warm soapy water then using a toothbrush that you won't use to give it a cleaning. Mold release agent has to be used with resin models and also be careful while sanding the dust, while there should be very little and it shouldn't go anywhere is still toxic. I won't go into too much more detail and it may seem like a bit of work but once you get one you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm often around so If you have any questions about GKs or anything, I'll be here or you could always send an email my way, its always there if you need it.
