It loses lots but not all not essential narrative storytelling, but it works really fine as a 3 hours long action packed stage play adaptation.

Apparently this one is the least faithful of the three thus far, and if that's the worst they can do as a theatrical interpretation, it really doesn't surprises me just how well Season 2 and 3 were received in Japan.

I'm pretty sure you would want to advance toward the middle with all of your pieces (I'd wager offensive early game play with queen and rooks would be pretty viable here cause you should realistically never be caught with that much open space to work with, and it ought to allow you to delay your opponents advance substantially), because anything else would be stretching yourself out too thin, allowing your opponent to isolate individual pieces.
With black and white meeting in the center of the board, you'd be left with a ton of room to maneuver your major pieces in the back to try and crack open your opponents position tactically, as they try to do the same to you. IIRC, Bernkanstel is the direct result of Rika's purging of past memory(?)/previous fragment experiences. Bernkastel is made of all the Rikas that were denied a happy ending, the ones that were sacrificed. Thus she's bitter as all fuck and wants to hurt other people to push that pain away.
