I started playing the second game today, and I don't like the combat/movement system at all. What's the general concensus on how the AT2 combat system is compared to the first one, and is there a map button (like R2 I think it was in the first one) that I'm just missing?

I also dislike the characters so far but that's probably just me. How many heroines are in the second one?

Also is there anything I could mess with the emulator to make it more stable? Can live with the graphics glitches I guess but the fps is just all over the place. Been trying some things and nothing seems to make a big difference.

>> No.7094354 [DELETED]

My copy of AT3 shipped Friday, hopefully it'll be here today or tomorrow.

>> No.7094364

>>7094331

General consensus say they like AT2's combat system, but they mostly compare it to the first game. I think it's fine but I do have to wonder if the whole guarding thing actually makes it easier than the first game, especially if you later find certain equips that extend the guard. Also, the map button is the start button.

There are three heroines in this game, the two you see now and a third one that will join the party late in Phase 2. Cocona technically isn't a heroine but you if you don't devote yourself to any of the Reyvateils you get an ending with her (often known as the Cocona Ending, or Neutral Ending).

You choose whether to go on Luca's path or Cloche's path late in Phase 1. Choosing one locks you out of the other's ending for that playthrough. To actually lock on to someone's ending, however, you have to get to the end of their Level 5 Cosmosphere and say yes when asked if you want to commit to her (you can also choose to stay just friends [permanently locking you out of their CS and ending] or wait till later to make your decision). You probably won't be able to do this with Third Reyvateil until Phase 4. A frequent advice is to wait until right before the last boss before committing (or not committing) to anyone, this way you can get three endings all on the same playthrough at the same time. You'll be gimped on costumes and song magic, though. So it's up to you whether you want to save time but don't get to use the new costumes/spells or use the costumes/spells for a longer period of time but have to replay longer lengths of the game.

Can't tell you much about the emulator as it's not perfect for me either. I think the FPS is mostly stable if you stick to DirectX3D 9 Hardware video setting and have that framelimiting thing disabled (assuming you're using the plugins/emu from the AT Made Easy pack), though.

>> No.7094385

>>7094331
The map is in start iirc. No way to view it while you're walking unfortunately.

Still debating whether I should jailbreak my PS3 to pirate AT3... I got the dongle ages ago but then started to hear that Sony changed their EULA and might start banning people, so I got scared to. But the system's been sitting around without me updating it as I decide so I can't play shit online anyway... Hm... Playing free shit, or playing online...

>> No.7094406 [DELETED]

>>7094393
You can go online with a modded PS3 and you don't need dongles anymore. I've never gotten a warning e-mail from Sony, either. I pirate most PS3 games but I paid for AT3 (and the other NISA games) because I want them to keep releasing them here.

>> No.7094416

>>7094406
It doesn't show up as "backup manager" as the game you're playing or whatever anymore?

Hm... Maybe I'll look into it then. I don't care that much about the wasted money on the dongle, it was only like ten bucks anyway.

>> No.7094420

>>7094406
I'd be tempted to pay for it, but as a full-time NEET I sadly lack the funding to do so at the moment. I might later, though, if I'm still able to find a copy.

Honestly, the Ar tonelico and Mana Khemia games are the only Gust games I like. But that's not really relevant...

The point of my post is that I still need to buy Ar tonelico II. I didn't have the money when it came out. Preordered both Ar tonelico and Ar tonelico Qoga from the NISA store, though.

>> No.7094425

>>7094364

Hm, fair enough. I guess I'm just more comfortable with a traditional turn-based combat system, and there's the fact that buttons on my pad randomly get stuck which messes with my reactions.
I also find walking around as being clunky in general, and not being able to see the map while moving sucks.

Ah well, guess I'll see if I get to like any of the characters better later on, and thanks for the tips about the emulator.

>> No.7094430 [DELETED]

>>7094416
multiMAN (the best backup manager) clears push logs upon closing so it doesn't get sent that you're using it. I've heard of people getting warning e-mails, but I think the only ones who have actually gotten banned are the ones who hacked in online games like Black Ops.
>>7094420
>if I'm still able to find a copy
That probably won't be too much of a problem, since PS3 games don't really get "rare," but don't expect the price to drop. NISA games tend to stay pricey.

>> No.7094433

>>7094364

Also oh wow, disabling frame limiting caused the game to run at 100 fps which is just hilarious/unplayable. Guess I'll have to mess around a bit.

So, as long as I don't have my PS3 online while I'm actually playing backup games I should (theoretically) be completely safe? (Well, people said the same about the xbox 360 before and they were wrong... I don't really own that many games I care to play online to begin with, though, so it wouldn't really be THAT huge of a deal to me if I got banned. My brother might be annoyed though.)

What method is best to connect to PSN, anyway? I haven't bothered, but I was thinking of playing some more co-op Demon's Souls sometime soon, so I'll need to be on PSN for that.

You know you COULD just go out and get a fat PS2 probably for pretty cheap, attach a network adapter/IDE hard drive (I think I spent something like $40 for a 400 gig one when I did it a year or so back) and then use swapmagic or something similar to install FreeMCBoot, and then Open PS2 Loader and play games off the internal hard drive. Been doing that for a while now, never had to dick with emulators. I guess the resolution will look a bit crappier, but still I prefer it to worrying about compatibility issues with the emulator.

>> No.7094447

You can also play over the network or a USB hard drive like this, but the compatibility is worse.

>So, as long as I don't have my PS3 online while I'm actually playing backup games I should (theoretically) be completely safe?
Theoretically, yes. I always play games while connected online; I even played Killzone 3 while connected to PSN 8 days early and nothing happened.

http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/codename-rebug-3-60-firmware-spoofer-v1-1-a-83015/
This is the easiest method. You just install the package and reboot, and it enables PSN access again.

Has the boxart been confirmed yet? I'm thinking of buying this after having pirated the previous 2 games. I thought the 3rd game looked bad at first but after listening to "sands of time", "song of the revolving star" and an anon saying that the game would go back to AT1's pacing, I'm really hyped up for it

Someone said that Mir doesn't appear in Ar Tonelico Qoga. Please tell me that's not true. I mean, in the second game we learned that she came to AT2's Tower in the first place to find a way to restore the planet, and sent Cocona off on a mission to the third tower, you'd think she'd have some kind of appearance in Qoga because of that...

Are there any references to what happened in AT1 in AT2? So far the setting seems completely different except I guess it's still around the tower.
Doesn't really feel like a true sequel though unless the things that happened in the previous game actually had a lasting effect on the gameworld.

Yeah, it's a long game. I started AT2 last month, and I just beat the game last week. I just need to beat Luca's path and ending now and I'll be done with AT2.

IDP hunting, Dive Therapy, Fan Club recruiting and especially shop events all add up the hours, I bet. I gave up on the first three during the endgame when I realized how many more IDPs that were around the world and how tedious dive therapy and getting them into the fan club would be. I still tried to get all the shop events, though.

Apparently the OST is missing from some orders if you ordered it from the NISA store. It seems limited to the calendar edition but I'm not sure how widespread the problem is as some people are reporting not having it and some are saying they do have it. Personally I've been charged but I've yet to receive my delivery confirmation yet, probably because I'm in the UK so hopefully they'll have the OST problem sorted by then.

Since ZUN was asking on the archive - some guy on Gamefaqs got his calendar copy through and I figured I'd post the images of the calendar he received.

You have to shake your controller when there's a red beat, that'll trigger the Purge scene. Otherwise, you won't, even if you have them On in the Menu.

Also beating Mute in the beginning on hard is impossible I think. Mute just hits WAY too hard and you hit way too little without anything to help out. I wasn't able to switch it to hard mode until maybe 8~10 hours later.

Are you guys implying that it's still possible to purge/level up song magic or whatnot, just that you won't actually see the animation unless you shake the controller at the right time? I haven't played the game yet, just want to be sure on something.

Also @ Onso: How is the game in Normal Mode? I tend to stay on normal whenever I first play a game, wanting to fight against enemies the way they're "supposed" to be. That and I fear hard might be too hard and require mandatory grinding. If normal is balanced (i.e. you'll still need to heal, party members may still get killed, occassional Game Over if you're unwise, etc., like most games) I may keep it on normal.

Yes, that's basically it. You can still Purge and whatnot, but do it at the right time and you get some nice gainaxing, among other bonuses, I believe.

>> No.7095733

Okay I just confirmed it.
In order to see the animation you need to purge at the right time. Finally, that was bugging the shit out of me.

Normal mode is pretty easy but it gets challenging later on. It isn't as intense as hard mode (Which seems literally impossible for the first few hours). I personally never grind in any game (unless I'm anxious to see the next atmosphere scene) but I'm confident I'll be able to get through hard mode without grinding. But for the first few hours, stick to normal and see how you like it.

>> No.7095755

Normal it is then. "Starts easy, gets challenging later" is all I needed to know. Thanks.

Oh by the way:

A) Are the girls' sprites still stripped if you don't watch the animation?

B) Are the heroines divided by tabs for synthesis like in AT2?

>> No.7095768

>>7095755
A) Yeah they're still stripped. But they skip the purge animation and you only get a little mini one of their song magic hyumas powering up. You'll still see them with less clothes when you activate it or during the victory screen.

The main Heroines are okay. Don't really know too much about them yet since everything is still a mystery and I'm 12 hours in (1hr of that is probably idle time).I love Saki but Chriatina Vee's voice acting is so cringe worthy.

Combat system was confusing as FUCK at first and I wasn't really enjoying it...especially since I was getting massacred in hard mode. Though thanks to a helpful anon, I seem to be getting the hang of it now and once you do its fun and intense.

Translation is pretty good. I like how they throw modern terms in there like "A'ight" and "hafta". And little casual sayings like "Schwing!". Way better than AT2's translation.

Great game so far IMO though very confusing if you dont read the glossary since there is a lot of shit that went down in the past. One thing I noticed is that the battle themes SUCK while everything else has awesome music.

Usually the website is like 2 weeks late when updating. They have phone numbers to different branches and I call them up once in a while to check on games. For some reason, it's hard for them to carry 'weeaboo' games, like if you tell them the game's name, it's like it doesn't exist. It was more interesting than Shurelia's for one. Chester got turned into a moe-loving creep, Shurelia going out of character and calling Miwa, "Mir" and asking her whether she was going to change the story again. Mir said that she was going to show her something nolstagic and summoned the final boss from the previous game. Fuck yes!
Best part have to be the end where Aurica, Misha and Shurelia appeared and congratulated Croix for completing the cosmosphere. Nearly burst out half crying and smiling when the song was called "Phantasmagoria". That was really sweet when it was filed under "those memories"

I got all of the IPDs as well, probably because I hate myself. There's a certain amount of satisfaction to be had from hitting the last boss for 450k with a Replekia-charged Phantasmagoria -- the idea alone tickles me: Shurelia charing up her tower to bounce a laser beam off of a orbital reflector to shoot en enemy halfway around the world, and that laser being further amplified by Cloche's own personal attack satellite -- but I'm not quite sure it was worth the 8 or so extra hours I had to spend getting them all into the fan club.

Though the satisfaction is diminished a bit when you've already shaved off more than half of the boss's health with your vanguards just trying to charge the thing. People say it's the best out of the whole series but from what I've seen so far I don't like any of the characters besides Tyria thanks to her VA being Maaya Sakamoto and cute derpiness, I miss the 2D sprites and semi-3D environments (it just doesn't feel like AT without this, imo) and the general lack of Mir saddens me.
It's not like I'll get to play it anytime soon though, as I neither have a PS3 nor the money to buy one (yet). But... yes, I have my concerns.

I bought the calendar set from NISA. I hope it actually comes tomorrow, I would've pirated it to play ahead of time but it still hasn't been uploaded anywhere.

Just hit Phase 4 in AT2, how much do I have left?

And oh my God Frelia is so flat I want to slap her chest with my dick.

There are 5 phases in total.
Hang in there!

Hong long are 4 and 5? Because I spent 2 hours of Phase 3 getting shop events then like 20 minutes in the actual plot.

I really like the 3D character models. They're sharp and colorful and sometimes you can see Finnel's ass. The fully 3D environments, however, are rather bland, although maybe that's just because I'm still early in the game and everything is rocks.

In my case Phase 3 and 4 were the longest. (including grinding and everything)
It's been a while since I played it but I thought were sort of equal in length and 5 being very short.

but I'm not 100% sure.

I agree, the enviorments and textures of backgrounds are rather bland. However, the 2D and 3D mixture works REALLY well in towns, and sometimes the game goes all artistic, I.E. when Aoto climbs any ladder and the skybox looks all symmetric and awesome.

Just wish some character models were more detailed, though, but at least GUST got even better with Totori.

>Just wish some character models were more detailed, though, but at least GUST got even better with Totori.

Gust improved big team with Totori. It looks almost exactly like the concept art, it's beautiful.

And those were some fast improvements, too. Atelier Rorona was their first fully 3D game. Totori is their third.

It's most likely because of customs, bro.

Yes, I've looked at screenshots. Hopefully NISA announces Totori soon.

I looked at wikipedia. According to it:

Rorona came out in Japan in June 2009. Ar Tonelico III came out in January 2010. Totori came out in June 2010.

In other words, all three games were developed relatively close to each other. And the graphics get a major upgrade with each game. Dayum.

I can only assume that these games are all experiments to make sure they can make the game look as beautiful as possible before finally making Atelier Anna.

Though AT and Atelier development groups are different ones, if I'm not wrong.

AT games are developed by a very small set of people and re-using assets from other Gust games. Atelier games are Gust's heavy hitters, so far.

Either way, yeah, I know that already. Wonder if Gust hit a graphical ceiling with Totori, though, since Meruru doesn't look all that different, at least looking at the off-screen shitty resolution images I've seen.

>He thinks Anna will even get her own game

Even Pamela is more important, franchise-wise, than her. I wouldn't mind a Yakuza: Kenzan-ish game with Gust's visual style featuring Anna as the main character, though.Yeah, right. As if.

A man can dream! But yes, I know what you say is true. The day Anna gets her own game will be the day when Flay gets a game revolving around his rise as a supervillain in order to ensure that a hero of justice is always necessary, to be released on the same day that ZUN releases a Touhou game starring Mima.

I really miss Anna.

Excuse me but who is Anna and why is she so popular? I've only played a few Ateliers... Iris 1 and some of Rorona, so I'm not familiar with most characters. I did get Mana Khemia 1 recently, just haven't played it yet.

Can't respond due to having to leave the house. (In before collective gasps.)

Atelier Puniyo or Atelier Anna, which one would get a game first?

Anna was pretty amusing but it felt like she kinda lacked screentime overall.
Puniyo in Mana Khemia 2 was amazing though

>Finnel's ass

Okay, 1:0 for 3D then, I guess. From what I've heard about teh characters though their only redeeming point seems to be their body designs. Not like I really can talk about them, sure, but it is kind of a turn-off... I expected a great set of characters for the final game, not a bunch of "Uhm, okay, so these are the heroes..."-types (which is what they strike me as so far).
I will still play it, if I ever get a PS3, but I have my concerns that it just won't feel like the AT I love what with the lack of any of the original characters and designs.
