Do some research on brokers in your country first. In the US most offer no fees for trading and other things, but there might be set fees (some percentage or flat amount per trade) for brokers in your country. I'm going to give you a real answer.

Investing in stocks requires a period of study (if you want to be serious about it). That involves studying accounting, how to read financial data sheets, and studying the specifics of how to analyze securities.

There's a lot of good books out there, such as Common Stock and Uncommon Profit and Security Analysis.

Don't dump your lump sum into stocks just yet. I'd recommend getting 20% of it and putting it into your savings right away. Of that 20% into your savings, see about putting a fourth into gold so as to preserve it against inflation (because you are not touching your savings for years hopefully). With the remaining cash, hold it now but do some study on companies to buy in the future.
