State worker pension funding. The stock skyrockets. They sell. The state workers retirement accounts increase. Win win. (unless the stock tanks). The tax payer hates state workers cause meh benefits. So for the state to increase taxes (or add other revenue sources) just for pensions is a sure fire way to get the boot from state legislative office. Doesn't exist. I think AF is relatively safe, anecdotally, because it's cheaper and faster than the train for local travel so all the French prefer it when they have to move day-to-day (which is a lot of them). They're also opening back up soon.
However there's no real requirement for the government to bail them out and the French government already paid out the ass (see the gdp-relative stats) for covid so far. Historically, "national" airlines haven't been bailed out even 50% of the time in many countries.

But there are industries that are too valuable and cant be replaced by others. Defense is one of the prime examples.

The US will not start importing rockets from Italy and have research labs in Sweden contracted to design a plane.

After that there are big companies that decide an election. If Ford or GE die they will vote against the guy who let this happen. It can happen but the officials in charge would have to literally stop caring about getting reelected. Theyd rather do a long, slow run down of the company before they let the shell go bankrupt.

Whats your point? Im not saying that obscure Belgian companies are safe, I argue that some companies are too big, too important and too connected to the state too fail.
In the US that would be LMT and some others.
In Europe Airbus or BA.

These companies will only fail when the countries backing them fail.
> and last I checked air france isn't an american national airline.
The ability to have a company too big to fail is not exactly an American one.
KLM-AF, Lufthansa are so connected to their countries and Europe that they can not be allowed to fail.

Fellow options writers, how worried are you about accidentaly adding another number to the amount of contracts and getting horribly btfo and margin called? Scares me, desu. There's no risk of this when you're just buying stuff.

Yeah I can see. When you write options, you do a "sell to open". When you want to "buy them back", you do a "buy to close". This closes the position by buying back options at the current value. The net credit (money you gain) is the difference between the premium when you sold it, and the premium when you bought it back. You can also (and this is often done) wait until expiry if the options are still out of the money. Then they expire worthless and you keep the full amount.
So if you "sell to open" too many options, then you can put in a "buy to close" right afterward and not lose much, if any money. Though you will lose some money in commissions to the broker.

What?
If you sell call options you usually know what you are doing or have them covered. As in "Buy the stock, write the call" or Buy-Write for short. Or write them whenever.

You can write call options naked but my advice would be "dont"

Buying it back IS the end of it. You hold no responsibility afterward. That's why its "buy to close". You will literally see four choices when handling options: Buy to open, buy to close, sell to open, sell to close.
If you have written options, you have selected "sell to open". This opens your position and some other fucker buys the options (likely a market maker or brokerage). When you "buy to close", you buy the options back off the market and your position closes. You hold no responsibility after that.
When you sell to open, you want to have the stock on hand. This is called writing a covered call. If you don't have the stock on hand, it makes your exposure even worse because if the option you wrote suddenly goes ITM and gets executed early, then you're on the hook to buy the stock at current prices. If you had bought the stock first then wrote options, then you can never not make money from it because if your option gets executed and your stock called away, it'll be higher than the price you paid for it.

So to basically close the position with no strings attached.
>you'd still need to hold cash to be able to buy stock with your options in case the other guy wants to execute his, right?
Early assignment risk is very small. I was never assigned before basically market close on friday. Its just more profitable to sell an option, even for the buyer.

But now lets say you sold a call, it is ITM and the person exercised.
Do you need money if you hold the stocks? No. The stocks get sold for that price.
Do you need money if you have no stocks?Yeah, but: With a margin account you are allowed to go into debt or the broker will probably automatically close the position for you.

So lets say the 11$ option got exercised and the stock is worth 10$. You do not have enough money to cover the position.
Two things might happen:
-The broker asks you to sell stocks or transfer money into the account.
-The broker will, probably, immediately resell the stock and ask for the remaining money. In this case 100$

Depending on the account and broker you have

>Even if you've bought the same options at the market, you're still obliged to hold the terms of the contract you've written, I'd assume. The other guy made it seem like the buying part was the end of it.
Oh shit. I should have read this as well.
No no. You buy back the call.

1. You write the option
2. You owe sombody 100 shares at a 10$ strike on May 8th
3. You buy the same option
4. Somebody would now owe you 100 shares at 10$ on May 8th
You owe sombody 100 apples at first and somebody now owes you 100 apples.
The thing is over.

You should also look at the metric "open interest".
You can probably see it in your broker. It is all the open options.
If you write a call that goes up by +1, once you buy back that option ("close the position") that interest decreases.

>It's true though, how much lower can it go? Answer: Not much lower.
Airlines resuned flying doesn't automatically people will immediately start flying like they used to.
International borders are still being shut
Economy have been a lot worse
People are now getting used to meeting online
Public are still worried about the virus
Also, they're now losing more money than they would usually gain, which take much more time than the period of travel closure to recover

KO seems good. I was doing a screening for stocks and comparing lower priced stocks vs high price stocks and it seemed to be better to buy the more expensive stock to sell covered calls at about +4-5% above current price. One that seemed good was Taiwan semi conductors, also GlaxoSmithKline. They have good dividends and decent weekly call premiums. I don't remember the other ones but it can change quickly. I was thinking of doing this for my ROTH IRA, just selling OTM covered calls.

It's possible, given how volatile markets are, but we've been seeing lower buying volume and increasing selling volume over the past three weeks. The momentum has been gradually reversing, finally transitioning downward as of the past two days. It seems likely that we're in for more selling before people attempt to "buy the dip" again. The past three weeks have been resistance around the 50% and 61.8% retracements, though I don't really give much value to Fibb. levels.

We're going into a news cycle that's going to have a lot less positive news and a lot more negative news, whereas a lot of the optimism that has been fueling this rally has been on the back of positive developments (re-openings, treatment progress, stimulus measures, etc.). If the optimism that we were seeing wasn't enough to break past a 60% retracement, I don't think it will be enough. For example:

Consumer loan impairment (for online lenders) reached 12% towards the start of April. For borrowers with FICO scores >740, that number is 7.5%. For borrowers with FICO scores <650, it's 20%.
http://archive.is/rwz4G

Roughly 7% of mortgage holders are seeking or have sought home loan relief thus far.
http://archive.is/FERTj

Unemployment claims exceeded 30 million, representing slightly more than 18% of the entire US labor force.
http://archive.is/1aYUM

Real unemployment estimates post-"reopening" are in the low to mid-teens for the remainder of the year.
http://archive.is/jKYEK

The Fed will maintain low (non-negative) interest rates for as long as economic conditions require, hinting at a longer economic rebound. They've been tapering QE since starting.
http://archive.is/yktlm

And regarding small business, as a snapshot of the current conditions, JP Morgan's business banking division saw 300,000 applications from small firms, of which 18,000 were initially funded, rising to 26,500 in total. That's less than 10%.

You missed the part where it went up 15% and down 10% in two weeks. RTX is a long hold, but the market is so volatile that you can swing trade anything. I bought before merger, sold at $67, and just rebought at $60. The beauty is that even if you fuck up your timing, it'll go up in the long run and you can just wait it out.
