A separate issue is of course venues in relation to EN, since the audience is spread all over the world. But that's something mamgement should have considered a long time ago. If you negative about it, then only Mori and Gura could ever fill JP venues and literally the rest of EN would be fucked for eternity(not just Kiara). The FF brand, at least for mainline singleplayer entries, has been on a downward trend for a long time in general. 13 and 15 left a bad taste in people's mouths and only 14 was able to buck the trend of the franchise becoming a complete laughingstock only able to coast on nostalgia (see also, the constant FF7 milking as their safety blanket) but not able to make something new relevant.

16 had some pre-release hype because Yoshida, the dude from the well-liked 14, was behind it, so that lifted expectations. Unfortunately, it just follows FF's modern trend of going away from turn-based and trying to be some character action game (because the devs have it in their heads that only action = mainstream appeal). Unfortunately it's also pretty basic for an action game, so ultimately by going for broad appeal it ends up pleasing no one really. The action crowd finds the gameplay too shallow and is bored by the rpg-typical convoluted story, loredump cutscenes and fetchquest; and the rpg crowd / oldschool FF fans are not pleased by the action gameplay and lack of deep rpg mechanics.
Other than that, the game also has no real good waifus, or an actual party in general, which is kind of a bummer for FFs. The story is meh, tries to be more modern mature GoT influenced than FF usually (takes itself far too seriously in places, while also having some jrpg animu bullshit in other places, so it's pretty weird) and misses some of that classic vibe that fans of the franchise felt was lost a long time ago. And yeah, outside of combat the gameplay isn't all that interesting either.
