This game scared the crap out of me as a kid. The cover art alone inspired a creeping dread so unsettling, I would turn the cartridge face down to block the image. I still tried to play it, but filtered me hard. Tried again twenty years later and had some fun with it. It seems like a poor man's Zelda, but it has a distinct charm. StarTropics beats the shit out of it though

The rock monster fucked me up the most. Not being able to see the werewolf's face made my imagination run wild too. And the claustrophobic situation of the hero. Surrounded by phantasmagoric hellspawn on all sides armed with a dagger and shield. It ignited anxiety and doom in my heart. Plus this cave theme scared the fuck out of me

I like how Nintendo did the 'series' type of games where they showed the actual pixels so people knew what they were getting. They were gussied up a bit sure but there was nothing misleading on those covers.

Think Duck Hunt, Mario Bros, Metroid, etc.

All written scifi from the 30s-80s is legit the most imaginative stuff I've ever read. All sci-fi movies, shows, games and anime stem from/pay homage to/copy stories from writers like Kurt Vonnegut, isac Asimov, Harlan Ellison and ray Bradbury to name a few. I personally love how older crpgs capture a similar feeling as reading an old sci-fi story. Wasteland, fallout, shadow run, Ultima martian dreams, b.a.t, star control 2. Now with fallout 4/76 and cyberpunk completely ruining the wealthy atmosphere of sci-fi for generic bullshit, it's frustrating. The golden age is gone, cherish what we have while we can.

Because we live in a post apocalyptic world. There was a global civilization thriving some 12 000 years ago that was wiped out by the younger dryas impact that wiped almost all of it out.

Ancient ruins show us the complexity of the old world, but common historians try to tell you these were build only a handful of millennia ago.

Everyone alive today is a descent of the surivors of that cataclysm and the deep memories trigger when they see stories of ancient advanced civilizations.

grind would mean being forced to go back to areas you already cleared and kill mobs just to level

at no point in crystalis do you have to do that if you just kill as you progress through the game instead of skipping

even zelda forces you to kill most of the enemies in a dungeon

>> No.9606834

>>9606812
Zelda 1 has better exploration thanks to its more open, more detailed world
both Zeldas have more interesting combat thanks to the relative weakness of Link's abilities (Crystalis guy is super agile, has endless powerful projectiles with knockback) and a far greater variety of enemy behaviors and abilities (this is a big one; Crystalis monsters usually just walk toward you like chumps)
both Zeldas have more interesting level design; Crystalis has okay caves/dungeons/etc. but they're mainly just mazes without puzzles or gimmicks or anything and are almost all similar to one another (Zelda 1 puzzles are crude yes, but they're better than NO puzzles)
Crystalis has fun sword attacks, a better story and more interesting world, a better soundtrack, more bosses, better story-related puzzles (to balance the lack of room-to-room puzzles in dungeons), better items than Zelda 2 (maybe not Zelda 1 though), better spells than Zelda 2, and more talking rabbits
I dunno that's what I came up with just now, deeper analysis would yield something different

>> No.9606838

>>9606834
>better exploration
it's a giant grid
>better combat
you stab a sword
>interesting level design
zelda 1 doesn't have legitimate puzzles, both games are just "you need to find X in order to progress further"

>> No.9606846

>>9606838
>you stab a sword

darknuts can close you in, wizzrobes can shoot at you surprisingly or when you're unable to dodge because of obstacles, wallmasters make room borders unsafe, occasional exotic enemies like patra threaten you in weird ways... in Crystalis you're almost never really in danger except maybe in boss fights, because dudes just walk toward you stupidly and can be knocked back easily
and Zelda 2 has the hammer brother minotaur-ish things, the various flavors of enemy melee weapon user, flying eyes, bouncing bubbles, lots of different stuff, plus the danger of being knocked into a pit
it's more interesting

>zelda 1 doesn't have legitimate puzzles,

well you gotta kill all enemies and push a block, again, that's more than just walking down one more same-shaped Crystalis hallway
alright listen criticizing Crystalis is making me sad so I'll stop here, but yeah it has plenty of room for improvement
