Japan's had popular male vtubers since basically the beginning. Baacharu, Inui, you could count Noja Loli Ojiisan. Nijisanji's men never did bad, they just did worse than the most successful girls but Toya held fine against the second wave.

It's not like I don't think Nijisanji or Holostars couldn't make a successful guy but the resources that go into debuting a man is the same as debuting a girl. It's not a problem of risk, if they debut a guy they make some cash on the side and call it a day, but they can just add another girl and make a ton of cash easy.

Nijisanji/Hololive timing their news just right, to vtubers that they've been accepted right when they have their model upgrades as indies, is fairly sneaky.

The indies already are down the hole a couple grand for their model upgrade and need to recoup the costs. So dangling their acceptance emails becomes a massive incentive to stay on and tough it out to make up the money because the first few months don't have the salaries sorted out yet (according to what's been said from HoloEN).

It's like the scene in Ozark where the Byrdes sabotage a casino by rigging the slot machines to bankrupt it, so that the owners have no choice but to sell to the Byrdes.

You can challenge me on the argument or how weak the analogy is, but it's basically timing a deal so your target is at a moment of weakness and will agree to your terms.

I've never really seen any reason that is actually convincing as to why they couldn't be. Some people come up with the reasoning that there aren't any existing popular indies. But whenever I have actually looked for male vtubers speaking English to see if this holds water none of them come near to measuring up to the popular Japanese ones. They almost always seemed to either just be uninteresting or felt generally low quality, have some weird out there design that is going to turn a lot of people off or feel like some kind of deviantart tier fanfiction character. I think that has much more to do with Hololive being more focused as a brand than anything else. You want cute girls playing at being idols while doing some casual gaming and occasionally singing Hololive has got you covered, they debut a new member and you know thats what you are getting, if you liked the other ones chances are you going to like that one. Nijisanji has a much broader variety of members with different appeals to audiences that don't really crossover so much. There isn't really any good reason to expect the same audience that likes Kuzuha for example to also like and automatically subscribe to Maimoto, Ange, Ichigo, Belmond, their content and appeals is all so vastly different.

Unlike Nova, Mint is someone I actually watched. I was even part of her "membooship", for a couple months so I can talk about her. She's pretty cute and funny, without relying on sex or poop jokes. She also keeps a bit of a "kayfabe" going if you are into that, so she usually says "when I was a little wisp" or "before I became a ghost" when talking about her past stories. She's probably at her best when she has any of her weird stream ideas, like that one time she did a karaoke of her singing only Ikenai Borderline 50 times.

And it wasn't even a punishment game or anything. She said she just felt like it. She knows a decent amount of japanese. And has never hidden that she was more fond of Nijisanji than Holo. This, coupled with the fact she was doing pretty well lately (and barely got to use her new model she hyped for over a month), makes it very, very likely she's getting into NijiEN. Or she just gave up of streaming entirely because her numbers aren't that great (just slight above average for indie standards), which would make me sad. And while Holo Vsinger is also a possibility, as much as I like Mint, I don't think she's a particularly great singer.
