my theory is that making it big through streaming is relatively new, and everyones recipe for success is very different

its less like other hobbies where theres a definitive xyz path you will see results in some form

streaming is very individualistic and personalized to the point that theres no solid meta that “just works”

in the end you take what you find useful and keep grinding until something sticks, so probably in that regard having discussions is less beneficial than just doing it

It's a coping mechanism. Pretty much everyone who starts vtubing will 'fail' at it, if you define success as making enough money on a monthly basis for it to be a fulltime job.
If success looks like "I have fun", then they're not a failure in this, too. They have something they've succeeded in.
They're giving up before they started. But also, if you publically say "oh yeah, I want to make a job outta this", other people who have internalized the NGMI will start trying to draw you back down into the crab bucket.

It's this and also I would like to add two more things.

First off is literally just "luck". Being at the right time for the right group of people who just so happen to think and act like you do. AND somehow stand out enough for them to click on your shit? Luck. Once you get a decent following, like ~200-300 it kinda grows itself as long as you don't do anything retarded.

Second thing is sort of related to luck. You do far better when there's no larger fish around. If a more popular vtuber is streaming, you're gonna see a hit. And if they're streaming the same thing as you? Even more so.

Probably the best advice I can give is to have a social group that think and act like you do. For example, having two to three other vtubers who act like you and you all work together towards a mutual goal of getting better. It's a very common corporate tactic because it works, it drums up interest way more than a single solo vtuber. Radio talkshows do the same shit as well.

Hey guys, just wanted to warn you all about a vtuber company known as UwU.TV. Their CEO, https://twitter.com/miaoooww, works with Epik, a domain registration and site hosting company that supports many alt-right platforms and recently had a huge info leak. He took that part out of his bio after the leak before.

Anyways, regardless of all the alt-right stuff, the company itself is pretty shady. Both the CEO and company account, https://twitter.com/tvuwu, have mostly bought bot followers. They also bought likes on their audition post, which is why there are a bunch of hidden replies from weird bot accounts. Not only that, but in their Discord, it was stated that they are only looking to recruit established vtubers with minimum 50 average viewers despite being a literal who company, and they also won’t be providing a model or anything like that. They also state that they won’t take any of your profit from donations, subs, etc. but will pay for your advertisement, which is pretty questionable.

Just wanted to warn you guys to not apply or work with them.

I'm still in the process of rigging my model but I've practiced streaming with a free 3D model. Where are you getting the drawing / layering from? This link / profile says its only for rigging. It says you need to provide a PSD.

You should do more research into finding a rigger / modeler. If your budget is this low, it's better to go for a png for now, and invest into someone later who seems a bit more experienced with Live2D (both on the art and rigging side) before just jumping to buy one of the cheapest things on the market.

Fiverr is usually not a great place to look. I recommend looking up people on twitter, as most people network through there.

I recommend staying away from japanese names, personally.
Try to start out with a screen name, or even your current screen name
Or pick two things you like, look up latin words, or look up name meanings based on them. You can also find fictional / legendary figures that relate to your character and take on their name (such as Amelia Watson taking on 'Watson', which helps with the detective branding)

Try not to dwell on it for too long! If you've narrowed a few down, give it a few days. Refer to your character by that name and see if it sticks. Not all of them may stick at first, but some will surprisingly do. Consider how you can't name yourself when you're born, but it usually fits. Sometimes its like that

It fits because if you parents aren't trash they spent a significant amount of time considering what they were going to name you (and they already had the work of a last name decided for them a LONG, LONG time ago)
Most English last names are just what you did for a living like Smith, or where you lived, etc. Mine is probably occupationally related. First names are pretty simple but my parents went over like 10 or so different names before they finally decided on mine.
I guess you could name yourself something like "John Haversack" as a Vtuber I just think most people would feel weird and then what if you share your name with a real, living person? I'd rather not have people google my vtuber name and get some random dude just trying to live his life.

You can always try googling the name before going through with it. Same could be said for Japanese names as well. (In fact, it's always good to google Japanese names just in case you share one with some random OC or some anime character, too)
Surnames are easy to choose when you take things like that into account (most are established), I guess that's mostly where the fantasy / fictional / legendary naming inspiration comes into play. Choosing a first name and finding a last name is a really effective way to make up names that don't feel dumb

I just took your second advice and looked it up, first result is some guy's amateur novel, but they are two different characters (One named after the name i chose and the other one named Akagi, which i thought was nice because it references two of my favorite anime at the same time, while being common enough as to not get acused of plagiarism)

I love monster designs, especially if waist-up human. You don't actually need the tail rigging, except maybe an idle animation on the tail, and the wings you can probably get by with rigging similar to hair, in that they don't do much, to begin with, but you might want to remove them for now -

One thing I'd consider is maybe not having the wings on your first model, though. Maybe add them as your avatar 'grows up'. They'll be expensive to rig, and slow down the process. On top of that, I've seen a lot of riggers and artists say they don't do monsters beyond fluffy ears fluffy ears are great justice

I've just crossed the 3-month mark of streaming. So far, I've managed to stay ahead on the Followers/Hours ratio - I didn't gain any in my last stream, but gained a few more this morning when offline, so I'm now at a 1:1 ratio (120 hrs, 120 viewers)
Ideally, I'd like it to be 1+:1, but my current PC is aging, so it's had to deal with older games. I've got an upgrade arriving by Friday, so I'll actually be able to go for not just niche games anymore.
Checking my stats against anyone else's is kind of disheartening though. I'd thought I'd done well to keep up the growth this long, so checked out the rest of the 'cohort' (people who started around the same time as me) and most of them have a significantly better ratio. Most of them with similar numbers have much fewer hours than I do; and anyone with similar hours has much higher numbers than me.

I know I shouldn't be comparing myself to others, and that it's not going to help, but it's vaguely useful in that it makes it look like I'm just NGMI. Still, people seem to enjoy the streams, so not going to give up just yet. Gotta keep on grinding!
