I don't understand why they didn't go BTS tier.
I know that some do have BTS tier fans, apparently. But honestly the omnipresent idol aura around Hololive where they are if they wanna be and aren't if they don't wanna be IMO contributes a lot to their success. It gives a whole overarching narrative and tone to their shifts between being 'seiso' and not-so in this sort of push and pull that emphasizes any gap moe, shock humor, and banter because you can always weave the narrative into it in varying levels and if you do it well it won't get stale. The girls know how to play with their toolkit. They aren't just gaming streamers. They aren't just utaite. They aren't just idols. They aren't just casual chat streams. They are all of them as they need or want to be, but instead of floundering when they want to shift in content for a day, they can swap between a series of well-defined archetypes available and expected of them. Furthermore, they can "individualize" those experiences, both as streamers, and on a stream to stream basis. Maybe this utawake is a meme utawake, that's great. The next one? The real deal, where she talks about worrying about being cute and not disappointing her senpai on stage, maybe sheds a tear. And such things exist for all other more common stream types expected of their unique combination of roles.

Basically, Hololive has a lot of tools because they lean into their shtick. Because they lean into it, but ALSO do not cross any lines for any of them(remarkably easy, usually. There are major pitfalls but I think we all know what those are, roughly speaking), they are rewarded with not just the freedom to pursue a reasonable variety of content(specifically non-game content) but also have a pre-existing audience for it.

Holostars in my experience shied away from the male idol thing. I don't know how well it would've gone if they didn't. But I can't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, it would've worked better than what's going on now.

i dont mind a handsome guy model, but barring those three i mentioned that look like a homosexual furry designed them, they are all kinda samey except for roberu that looks like a painting come to life and aruran who, while a cool dude, has the worst facial hair ever. it makes me wonder what a good beard on a 2d model could look like
