I completely agree.
Hololive EN is a lot more popular not only because they have a wide variety of content that appeals to a wide variety of people, but their talents are also very normalfag friendly. People love a cute anime shark girl who acts silly on stream and throws in a few memes and sexual innuendos every once in a while, or a gaming gremlin who likes to tease their chat.
On the other hand, Nijisanji are all former indie VTubers who appeal mainly to otakus and vtuber fans. With the exception of maybe Selen, the things these girls talk about on their streams is a bit more niche that casual anime fans who only got into vtubers in 2020 may not care about.

Her previous covers are okay. Nothing too technically impressive, but she clearly knows how to sing and has a very soft, sweet voice. Her karaokes sound like she's holding back a bit and it feels like she's not always entirely familiar with the songs she does. Same deal with her piano stream. Clearly knows how to play the piano well, but was fooling around and replicating songs she didn't know well by ear, so it sounded a lot worse.

I think most of the more popular indie/small company EN vtubers have realized at this point that while being accepted into Hololive would mean guaranteed popularity and income security, it would also mean "selling your soul" in a sense. Less freedom, more expectation to adhere to "idol" culture, significantly reduced community outreach, and more.
