Is YT really using faac? It sounds decent on the first pass. This flow only slightly degrades the original stream quality, and some clippers are likely using it.

I can reproduce the problematic YT clips when I do:

From what I can tell comparing between the AAC and opus rips of uploaded YT videos, we're already losing a good amount of quality at the original 128kbps AAC re-encode.

isn't libavcodec's AAC encoder faac? it's definitely libavcodec, and it'll tell you that if you use youtube-dl to query the format. for archival audio it's opus targeting 160. it is a little baffling to me they allow such huge video bitrates and such paltry audio.
