Only real problem is that we've had no fucking success with theme based contests.

Your proposals would make it too convoluted and repeat the mistakes of the last contest. You need to be more the ruthless in the current state of /wg/; keep it simple with no nonsense. My suggestion for a contest would be to have awards given out by the authors who participated, to the other story they liked most. That way there's more of a chance to win something, and participating gives you more influence.

The reader feedback is incredibly sparse there, which you would think readers would opt more into interacting with each other and the author since the site provides a decent enough comment thread system. You'll get little pockets of comments here and there, but nothing that really counts as constructive feedback besides the occasional "I wish this was a little longer" kind of thing.

I didn't really think of the gender split as a factor, but now that you mention it, women seem a lot less likely to give in depth and constructive reviews. I have implored my wife on multiple occasions to give proper feedback on the books she reads on the sites that take them. She has finally started to give the books she finishes, or doesn't more robust ratings and comments. She even started making a blog over the holiday break, which I'm going to have my own story reviewed on there some day, hopefully. There's probably a lot of sociology behind it, since male audiences are more likely to be direct and honest about how they feel towards something they consumed. They also tend to know what they want more of, and will try to help cultivate that. There is also the inherit aspect of humility that men have with one another as opposed to women. From a woman readers pov, they would likely not want to hear how the self insert vamp fucker story they wrote could be improved upon, so the benefit of constructive feedback is less known to them.
