Reddit was never supposed to be a replacement for 4chan. It was a replacement for forums. The entire purpose of reddit is to share information, which is also why on any good subreddit politics and nonsense gets down voted because it's not relevant to anyone.
The thing about up votes and such is that important information rises to the top and pointless shit falls to the bottom.
People cry circlejerk but that's only relevant for people using it for what it's not intended.

4chan on the other hand is built on back and forth conversations. 4chan is a site that revolves around the current latest conversation, not necessarily important information. It's a place for discussion, not info dumps.
Anyone who thinks reddit is inherently bad is using it wrong, it's a great place for aggregated technical/informational resources. It's not a glorified chatroom like 4chan.

And it does it fairly well, though personally I hate the layout at least it's better than digging through old forums.

Because /his place has generals, threads get bumped with replies and are organized by how recent the replies are by default. It encourages people to engage with whatever the people currently posting are talking about.
Reddit is a reaction board, it's more similar to comments in news websites. The first people to post something that matches the consensus are rewarded with visibility, not the most thoughtful posts. They still reward being thoughtful more than not being, but only if you can also be quick. If you come a day late with an interesting take, you'll be ignored because the entire subreddit will have moved on from the subject. But if you want to talk about a Holo Original song that came out a month ago in this place, just hit up that chuuba's general and people will normally engage with you.
Schizos, rrats and retards are rewarded with (you)s, and are the scourge of this place, but you can still have good discussion if you just ignore them. You can't force Reddit to revisit old threads to talk about stuff after the dust has settled, to borrow a trendy retard term from here.
