As someone who isn't really familiar with regloss but decided to check out the 3d debut, is their whole gimmick that they're super amateurs or...? I saw some comments saying it was nerves but honestly their group performances didn't really improve all that much by the end.

Because it was live. Nobody that has to stream most of the time can dedicate the time needed to improving their performance ability as dancers or musicians. It's all fixed in post production, but if it's live then they can't fix it that fast. That's also why their models and tracking was breaking, and why Ao's arms took on a life of their own, and why they had to rush off-screen.

Unfortunately, they probably suffer from Cover Corp only really having success with Hololive. Their usual strategy is to build up brand loyalty and IP recognition with streams, then funnel fans into other stuff and sponsorships. It seems they just copy/pasted most of that strategy for DEV_IS, but it's going to get in the way of any serious attempts at performance work, including being idols and 3D lives that are actually live. That's just obvious.

Hajime is the strongest all around member so maybe. Even if you make the argument Kanade is a better technical singer, Hajime is still right behind her in singing and absolutely incredible as a stage performer which is where idols shine the most.

If you talk about their stage presence only, yeah, I think Banchou is the indiscutible leader.
Raden and Ririka are still too self-conscious of their performance, Ao doesn't seem interested and Kanade is Kanade.
Outside of performance and regular streams and such, I think Ririka and Raden can totally take the leading role with ease.

You're not even wrong, the original for Museum of the Future uses something on the vocals too but it's not noticeable pitch correction. It's distorting the vocals like a vocoder. Pretty sure you can do that effect with autotune.
However, when Raden was singing it was modifying the pitch too much and that really doesn't sound very pleasing.

It seemed like some of them were struggling with breath control while trying to sing while dancing. Which is admittedly very hard. Kanade especially. She was considered the best singer in ReGLOSS from what I've seen, but she was clearly struggling in the group songs. I don't think it's a coincidence that she chose an acapella number with no dancing for her solo. Bancho on the other hand has a history with dance and really stood out in the group songs.

Regardless their songs did seem a little more raw than even regular hololive performances. I wonder if Cover is trying full unedited live performances for ReGLOSS where Hololive has had some touching up.

I think they all did fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but Ririka’s performance sticks out to me like a sore thumb. By the end she looks extremely tired and barely dancing, but she was stumbling in the beginning too.
