The reason is simple: it is not your responsibility to balance the game. Pick a shit character and you will lose, feel bad about yourself, and hate fighting games. They will say they play for "fun" but there is no fun in constantly losing while also doing more effort than the rest
Street fighter 6 is very very balanced relatively speaking, but not at the beginner level, and wasting time learning combos or motion imputs while your rivals are learning how to actually play real the game is the equivalent of just playing OSU instead

So I’ve got a few thoughts on buffer and why it’s necessary.

Without going into too much detail or using an anecdote, without a buffer, every action turns into a trinary. Presume you have to do something on the first possible frame. With no buffer, your inputs get lost right after being read. What this means is there are three outcomes. If you input early, your input is lost entirely and you fail the condition. If you input exactly on time, your input is successful and you pass the condition. If you input on any frame later, you fail the condition because you missed the window. This makes any required timing a 2:1 fail-success ratio.

But it’s worse than that, because those failures have more weight than the success. It’s not just one frame on either side that results in failure, it’s all of them. So in reality you end up with something more like 10:1, or even more depending on the range.

This is bad. However, generally this isn’t TOO big of a deal. Most people can learn to reliably do a frame perfect input so long as the timing is consistent and they can prepare for it—see the number of people who can pull off the flagpole glitch in Super Mario for an example. It’s hard, but as long as you can see it coming, you’re fine. But now factor in other aspects to the scenario, make it more variable and less predictable, for example acting out of blockstun, where the timing of the stun can vary with no visual indicator of actionability, and the timing of the attack hitting you also varies. Suddenly the ability to nail that frame perfect input becomes much more difficult. And that’s not even accounting for opponents doing mixups afterward, making the frame perfect input itself potentially variable (like going for a tick throw). Even if the window you have to input stretches to five frames, the amount of variability makes it work like much less than that in practice.

Also add in the fact that you’re unable to spam the button or stick input every frame. At best you’re going to be hitting it every 2 frames, meaning there’s a gap frame that you can miss. And a real human isn’t going to be mashing that fast, so you’re probably getting at least five frames of gap in between mashes, more than enough to fail the input in most cases.

Buffering fixes all of this. For starters, humans are much more capable of nailing a 5 or 6 frame window for an input raw, without even mashing the button press. Even with variability, it becomes far easier to hit that increased window. This means that your success condition stretches out for many more frames, helping to even the weight of the success-failure ratio. And if someone isn’t sure about their timing, they can always mash the input. Sensible push buffers refresh whenever they get a new input regardless of how much is left in the buffer itself, meaning that players can reduce the potential gap in their spam down to 0. This results in far fewer dropped inputs and allows for optimal reactions, so long as the player perceives the situation and inputs correctly.

Furthermore, the presence of a buffer helps all players. I’ve been talking about defensive situations, but the same applies to offense. If, for example,you need to input the next part of a rekka on the first actionable frame, you run into the same timing problem as the player blocking it. With a buffer, the timing becomes much more lenient, allowing you to hit the optimal timing without having to memorize the exact frame perfect intervals. Given that rekkas and similar actions are usually deterministic and the offense is usually in control, it does help the defense MORE, but it’s not a pure detriment to less precise players doing offense.

Finally, the addition of a buffer aids in one of the most important aspects of game design, which is lowering the skill floor. No new player except for one of the most devoted, rare few wants to pick up a game and find that they’re consistently failing input checks or getting options they didn’t want because they’re one or two frames off from the necessary timing, especially when they’re up against players who can hit that timing, and who can abuse their opponents’ misses. The skill ceiling doesn’t get any lower, but the barrier for entry becomes much easier to clear.

It is worth noting that there’s one thing lost with the addition of a buffer, though, and that’s the ability to pivot an input at the last possible second. Let’s say you’re planning to attack and spamming the button, but you get put into an unexpected scenario where that attack input converts to something you didn’t want to do. If the buffer is too high, and the attack input is a higher priority than the input you want to pivot to (eg. blocking), you’re effectively stuck. Not having a buffer allows you to switch all the way up until the frame before the bus reaches the station.

However, this sort of situation is not only incredibly niche compared to the vast array of use cases that buffer improves, but also something that most players couldn’t react to even if they were able to pivot their inputs in that way. Plus, with some clever buffer clearing by the developers, that sort of case can be mitigated until it’s a nonissue. The developers just need to be certain they’re not buffering things for too long to the point they become sticky.

In conclusion, not only is there effectively no reason to not include a buffer in your fighting game (or any game really), the amount of beneficial effects it provides makes it, in my opinion, a requirement.

I'm sorta agree with this take. I grew up with the goku mentality and love to get my shit kicked as long as the other player is having fun and plays better. The moment the other side is clearly not enjoying themselves or it's too weak, I lose interest. Same reason why I usually pick self-feel good characters instead of top tiers.

But that's precisely why I know that if I ever want to play "seriously", I just have to pick whatever hot topic shit is available and go to town, but at that point I'm playing for bragging rights, this coming from a League of Legends player.

In the other hand, once you become too good, hit your ceiling and can easily tell how something is gonna go, shit becomes really boring to play. Metaslaving is a way to bypass this feeling because you are just going to fall upwards the more you play.

I have adapted enough to keyboard to try ranked seriously from now on.
I think i can reach MR 1600 or 1700 now even if I go hard and I need to start fighting people my level.

In itself I dont believe in ranks and i dont think playing them often is the best way to improve since you need not to care about results , but the battle hub is getting to small for me and i am not finding easily people who are strong enough to give me a challenge and there is also the issue where people run away from me after one match because i am both bison and modern so I technically dont blame them

oof, they added the Neutral B and Side-B to Juliette, and from what a better Julie demonstrated me, she even has similar combos to them too. I just know I killed myself too many times because she also has Sonic's neutral down air lol

The 1v1 is fine. Very frustrated they have no dash dancing. Air dodges carry momentum but only kinda? Ledge grab boxes are extremely small. I keep forgetting shields and grabs exist because this feels like the fast, floaty sort of game that usually doesn’t have them (eg Multiversus, Brawlhalla). Seems like they went the route of having specials be identical in the air and on the ground. Defensive play seems very un-nuanced and offense is a game of hit and run except maybe the cat’s tether? Either way, free flowing combos didn’t make much sense.

Big problem: it’s super difficult to tell when you’re getting hit. There’s no camera freeze, minimal hitstop, and very little in the way of sound or impact to tell you you’ve given or taken a hit. I get sacrifices have to be made for the battle royale, but that’s also where the problem shows up most prominently. That can be fixed, but man is it a feel killer

Oh and the tumble animation is funny lol

The shield parry is hilarious once you learn to time it, and I think that to make proper combos you need to use the EX specials, I'm not sure but I think I managed to make a long one with Neutral, Neutral forward, Side-B and EX Up-B that almost gave me confirm until I fumbled the last hit.

What are your thoughts on shield girl? She feels annoyingly too good with a neutral B that does everything, practically infinite recovery, and a counter that kills at 40 for a move that does 1.

Responsiveness? I had a lot of trouble getting things like techs and grabs to come out consistently.

What do you make of the health mechanic? I still haven’t figured out the logic. Obviously you get launched more the lower it is, but 0 health doesn’t seem to mean anything. Sometimes you die from a linking hitbox, sometimes you live full power moves for ages.

How about player feedback? I still find it very unclear what’s actually happening when things interact. The lack of a visceral response when I hit someone or get hit makes it really unclear what’s meant to be powerful and what isn’t, same with shield hits. The launch arcs feel a bit weird too, low deceleration and low initial speed like you’re floating, so when you die it often doesn’t seem like you ought to.

I think everyone can agree the camera is dogwater. Too zoomed out all the time, doesn’t seem to know where it wants to be, and focuses only on you instead of both players, so you’re often unclear on where they are.

What about just general gamefeel? I think I’m getting a grip on what makes it feel bad to me. I think it shares this similar lack of weight to basically any PF that isn’t smash or rivals or 2XHolo. Like what you’re doing in the air and on the ground don’t factor in with each other. No momentum conservation, no real weight to your landings unless you air dodge, in which case it feels like you’re stuck forever. There’s just this weird plasticky feeling around it that reminds me of Multiversus and the NASBs, and it feels gross.

I think the netcode isn’t ready for a battle royale while also being a platform fighter. 1v1’s are better but still have issues that other rollback platfighters don’t, it’s not clear whether this is a prototyping thing or if it’s just going to always be like that.

Finally, what do you make of the visuals? This is definitely a prototype so I think it’s only fair to go easy on them, but jeez it’s insanely hard to figure out what’s going on in my opinion. Things like invincibility, hit effects, grab indicators, shields, perfect shields all just don’t communicate visually what’s going on. The character models and animations are amazing but I think everything else looks like ass.

Oh and finally finally—what’s up with fast falling? It feels like there’s this weird delay where you have to be falling for like half a second before it registers. Or maybe they’re just not buffering it.
