Classic is 6 button, 3 punch 3 kick, and is more of less "manual" mode. You gotta link shit together yourself, the game doesn't do any handholding for you.
Modern is 4 button (light medium heavy special), you don't have to do any actual inputs like qcf or dp, you can just press the special button so 1 button dps are a thing, and has an "auto combo" button that performs a simple target combo for your character. The downside is that you lose access to some of the character's moves and you do 20% less damage than classic.
