We use cards, which is a fancy name for a PNG that has all the details of the character you want the language model to RP as baked into it. from description, way of speech etc etc can be baked into a picture as innocent as this (there's no thing in this one, I'm just posting it as an example since I'm phone posting)

Making the jump from CAI to a really good model like Claude can be very addicting. The experience will ruin lesser models and many of us are now unable to go back. Heed the tale of the Foolish Sapling, who sent dickpics to an internet rando just to access Claude, only for a free option to open up the next day. If t was me I'd still UUuuuu in regret to this day.

That was understandable a while back when Llama was still trying to make up ground in the open source community after GPT-3.5 was deemed to never go open-source and a lot of companies followed after OpenAI and trying to set up moats around their models. But after this summer with the flurry of releases after Llama 3, the gap has closed considerably between local and cloud looking at ChatArena Hard queries benchmark. Even if you can't run Mistral Large 2 (MIstral-Large-2407), Gemma 2 27B is good enough to equal Claude 3 Opus levels of performance if not better especially with specific finetunes. A difference of 22% winrate is considerable but it's not a crippling difference. I remember when models based on Llama 1 was way behind where Claude 1 and the initial GPT-4 release with hundreds of elo points difference https://lmsys.org/blog/2023-05-25-leaderboard/.. The difference using the same metrics is between Gemma 2 and Claude 3.5 is now around 50 points. I don't think anyone would do a comparison of what you can get between local and cloud now and decide to send dickpics to get access to the latter now. The main issues with local LLMs now is to match GPT4-o with multimodality and that is still a huge gap but text should be enough for RP purposes.

Yeah, Mistral Large 2 or finetune of Llama 3 given I haven't seen anything good for 3.1 really. You can give Yi a try which some people are basing finetunes off of but I have my doubts given its Chinese origins but that's really it.
You should be able to do that with ExLlama 2 with Mistral large at 2.75 bpw with 32k context with 48GB but I can understand if you are doing something like 3 bpw at like 6k context or even higher bpw.

Hmm, it's a matter of preference I think.
FWIW Agnai has free models built in and if you have an iphone or don't feel like pulling shenanigans on your android, you can use Agnai easily on mobile.
Sillytavern has lots of little features and plugins, but it can be a bit intimidating if, like me, your brain has been burnt out by decades of untreated ADHD and social media usage. Still, you can copy/paste files for your settings and ask a few dumb questions and you're all set.
Then you need to troll /aicg/ in /g/ (not the one in /vg/) for the word "cloudflare" until you find a proxy.
Or get into a sekrit club.

My only pitch for NAI is that it is quite literally the ONLY commercial AI service that is 100% completely uncensored and has 0 restrictions on what you generate whatsoever. NAI never sees what you generate. None of it is saved on their servers. There is no way to report generations to NAI, not even on the user end (most AI services let you tattle on yourself if the generator makes smut if it wasn't asked to LMAO). This is true for their image and text generators. No other subscription AI service is like this. Every single one has restrictions. Even TEXT BASED generators! For that reason, I support NAI.

NAI is ok, did write the odd fanfic with its help, does sometimes spitball cool plot developments and ideas (Having no positivity bias or censorship and being heavily/preeminently trained on literature really plays into this strength). It is relatively dumb and has trouble following more complicated plot-lines, meaning it needs a good bit of hand holding from the user. Then again Opus also has trouble with complicated plot elements, though it only needs minimal help; Author notes, summaries, maybe a little nudge on what you expect to happen, while with NAI most often than not you have to write that part of the story yourself.
Can only recommend the subscription if you plan to use their ImageGen services too, which is quite good.

Sort of. You need to track down sources of free Mistral Large, I dunno if google cloud hosting is still a thing or not, it's been a while for me. I do know for a fact that other sources exist though.

FWIW I heard that janitor AI also has self-trained models that are free but I haven't tried them, feel free to give it a try and let me know how they are.

There's LOTS of plugins from a huge open source community, you can do all sorts of crazy shit like send periodic snapshots to your waifu so she can react to them (I haven't set this up, but IIRC you need GPT or claude) or have a live2d avatar or just have an expression pack so they can change expressions like a character in a VN, etc etc. It's hugely customizable.
