Simplistic color themes (Mori is just black, Gura is just blue with some white, Ina is just purple and grey...)
More or less consistent art style so they dont look weird next to each other
Even the worst designed one (Kiara) is salvaged by god tier face design

Overdesigned shitshow, like Kiara with her 5 million accessories
Colors are all over the place and seemingly random
Mostly bad art, especially that hack Fatenigger artist
Zero art consistency, all completely different styles, they all look like a bunch of indies that got thrown together

This is the first time I actually see EN2 and the only thing I'm left wondering is "what the actual fuck?"

What in the FUCK were they thinking? What went through their addled minds when they hired those amateurs to make their live2d? The colours are all over the place and clash like crazy (and sometimes the colour choices are just ugly on their own), their faces are nasty, and they all have comically giant tits for some reason. The rat looks like she'd make sense as a loli yet she isn't one (also, no lolis after they were the cause of HoloEN's success????).

I'm so pissed, because I actually liked HoloEN, and now they're tainted by being associated with this trash...

I saw someone else make the comparison and I thought it was very accurate: EN1 designs are like TF2 and EN2 designs are like overwatch.
Overwatch is new and shiny but there's so much visual clutter everywhere and despite all the work put into making the characters they're pretty much only known for porn. Tf2 characters on the other hand seem almost bland in comparison, but they all have so much personality that even 14 years later they are some of the most recognizable faces in gaming. Although their designs were very simple they're also extremely consistent and focused which goes a long way.

I will say though that the one with the ribbon (civilization?) has the most simple design out of the whole bunch.

I know some people claim that Westerners like this style but, really? The whole theme is cringe to begin with, "Oh Let's found a religion with Vtubers" is fucking stupid. If you REALLY wanted to go with a goddesses theme, why not use models that are similar to depictions of Norse and Greek goddesses? Why bother with the stupid lore that you created?

Furthermore, I just don't understand why you would make something that when you even compare it to EN1, looks totally out of place. My issue with this in general is that they seem to push this whole "lore" thing a bit too much, even back during EN1.

Most of EN1 seems already tired of that shit and only seems to bring it up when necessary. The only ones left that seem to refere to their lore is either Calli and Amelia. Ame at least seems to wing it just fine at least.

Gura seems to have already gave up that shtick and I don't really watch Kiara so I have no idea if she's still doing that "I'm a phoenix" crap often.

Even JP seems to drop all their lore shit aside from some exceptions.

Its not supposed to be a 24/7 thing, it's like why so much design goes into their outfit when you only see their face.
Vtubing is more than streams, fanart and fan content is a big aspect of why they get big. They're anime characters and they play hard off the anime artist popularity. Lore and design goes a long way toward driving people to draw things about/for them or make fan stories and shit like that.

You don't reference it every 5 seconds, but the fact it's there gives you something to play on when you want to play on it. And it let's artists draw things with that in mind.
