I used to watch holojp but I kinda lost interest last year. After hit me that no matter how much of a good fan I am to them I will never be considered anything but another gaijin pay pig. And if I'm going to be a pay pig then I might as well be one for the branch I understand.

Yes, I have them play on the background and it's pretty comfy. And I know a little Nipponese so when I focus a bit I can even join in the banter between the chat and the streamer, and I always write in romaji or English to show them kaigai nikki like them.

I just barely understand enough to watch comfortably.

The worst part isn't losing track of what my oshi is saying in zatsudan, since I've long since given up on being able to follow along with Japanese pop culture, but rather in game streams like Subaru's (not my oshi) where I lose track of what she's saying about the story and can't seem to resolve it even with context hints from the game unless I pause and relist a few times.
It's the giant chasm between knowing 10000 common words and watching game streams easily, and knowing 25000 words to be able to understand 99% of what she says.

>> No.78065097

At this point I'm able to understand like 90% of what's going on in the average stream, the only things that really trip me up are slang and jp memes and shit. But this is true for me with en vtubers too because I don't keep up with English pop culture or memes at all either, so it doesn't really bother me.
I learned jp mostly through doujin novels and manga so it's actually easier for me if there's something on the screen they're reading from like game text, I can get kind of lost in the sauce if it's a meandering zatsu or something.

srs sucks for grammar and you kind of just pick that up through osmosis anyway. For vocab a combo of both, reading is way more effective but takes a lot more time and way more grinding and frustration in the beginning. It depends on the person honestly, I know some people go all in on reading with no flash cards or anything but I don’t know if that would have been possible for me. srs eases the difficulty level a lot at the beginning but is basically useless after a certain point.

Even if you don't understand JP, some chuuba are easier to understand regardless when gaming or watching something, eg., Subaru. I didn't at first, but I felt left out not knowing what my chuubas were saying outside simple anime phrases, so I picked it up more seriously and now I can sort of keep along their conversations.

Honestly I wish I'd done this 15 years ago, but unfortunately ESLchaama school didn't let me pick any of the 3-4 languages I was slightly interested in learning.
